OTish- Pitino on whether he's ''Coach #2''- ''Doesn't matter if I am or not''

Submitted by Chitown Kev on

Pitino also said he was discussing former Louisville player Terry Rozier's sponsorship deal with Adidas in phone calls with Adidas representative James Gatto.

The FBI complaint says Gatto had two phone conversations on May 27 with a phone number used by "Coach 2" and another one on June 1, the day the Courier-Journal reported Brian Bowen enrolled at Louisville.

Asked if he is the "Coach 2" listed in the FBI's criminal complaint released Tuesday, as a law enforcement source confirmed to the USA TODAY Network and the Courier-Journal, Pitino said it "doesn't matter if I am or not."

In the meantime, Ricky is selling his home in Louisville and getting the f*ck outta dodge

I think he means it doesn't matter as in "I'm in trouble either way whether I'm coach 1 2 3 4 or 5, so it doesn't matter if I'm 2 or a different one?"

Sounds like a man who's realized that the devil has come to collect his due. He knows now that no matter what, his legacy is tarnished. He can't talk his way out of this one, and he knows that this is what he'll be remembered for.

Being a sleeze. A cheat. A scumbag. And everything in between.

I think he's saying "It's all circumstantial." [In other words, he doesn't think Gatto will talk.]

I read the articles about the FBI's case when they came out but I don't remember what is the criminal aspect of the Adidas/Gatto arrest.

I understand the fraud aspect of being paid to steer families toward a financial advisor, but I'm hazy on how Adidas is breaking the law (as opposed to NCAA rules) by paying to steer talent toward the programs it is invested in.

The quick summary is that they (the individual coaches and agents and Gatto, not Adidas itself) are alleged to have defrauded the universities by depriving them of their right to control the use of their assets (basketball scholarships) and inducing them to give those scholarships to ineligible players.
