I think it will be Ausmus, but man......I would be happy with both getting pink slips today

managers in baseball. My vote is Caldwell. He looks routinely uninspired, and checked out while I watch him. He looks unbothered by shoddy play, and disinterested in winning. Many have complained that the Lions play without much fire, and he clearly is no energizing variable to the team. When an organization gets worse and worse, and there are salient questions about playcalling, and how players are making choices on the field, the coach should be in the crosshairs. Fire Caldwell.

But the root of the problem is the Ford family's ownership. The team is doomed as long as they continue to own the franchise. I wish there were a way to force the sale. Sell to owners who care. My fandom has been waning for years, and is nearly decimated.

I think Asmus should go first if only because the baseball season is over, and what do you really gain by firing Caldwell with 12 games left in the season?  You won't increase the chances of hiring the guy you want to be Caldwell's successor.  It won't make the Lions' season any better.  Give him an opportunity to show he can right the ship.

I've been willing to be patient with Asmus.  I'm a late arrival to the Fire Asmus bandwagon.  But, I now think he is deficient in two key areas.  First, his in game management is still below average.  He's better than he was; for example, he will now try for the four out save instead of the "defined roles" approach to bull pen management.  He's made other marginal improvements.  There are still too many "what was he thinking" moments, and too much trust in established veterans who this season have only established that you can't trust them.  I waivered when Sanchez had his mid-August revival; maybe Asmus knows something we self-appointed loud-mouths don't.  But, Sanchez faded, and there were way too many Pelfrey starts.  You can't blame Asmus for Pelfrey being on the roster, but he doesn't have to keep giving Pelfrey the ball.

Second and more important, he does not get the best performances out of his players.  Say what you want about Leyland, but he avoided extended losing streaks.  The Manager's job includes keeping the players on an even keel and not let a few bad games start to build on each other.  In contrast, this season's Tigers were one of the streakiest teams I've ever seen.  That tells me Asmus couldn't pull the players out of their funk, and was just along for the ride.

Who's available to replace him?  I see that Ron Gardenhire is still not managing for anyone.  He's clearly not going to jump back into the dugout for more than a season or two.  That's OK.  The window for the Verlander, Cabrerra & Martinez based Tigers won't be more than a couple seasons anyway.

somebody has to start; especially when zimmerman and norris were hurt.  you have to start either sanchez or pelfrey.  i hated that as much as anyone, but you can't blame ausmus for that.

my choice was sanchez because at least he has been good in the recent past.  but they both clearly sucked.  and we are stuck with them again next year.  thanks avila.

Caldwell. New front office will want to put their own stamp on the organization. And he is terrible. Ausmus is probably just slightly below average IMO. And the Tigers had a bad season, but just missed the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Lions are going downhill and fast just like Caldwell with the Colts.

a nice job with the young starters, the decision to sit Upton a few days paid major dividends and I never felt that his team was giving less than 100%. He was victimized by the bullpen, which has been an ongoing problem for the Tigers and injuries, with no position organizational depth. I mean think about it, they finished the year with one starter that was penciled in when the season began.

Or both, but Ausmus wasn't horrible this year.  Wasn't good but wasn't horrible.

Caldwell is a disaster.  That being said, Lions are trash no matter who comes here, as others have pointed out.

Both are horrible, like many others have said, and both should not get another year.  I don't think Ausmus is the right manager for a veteran team like the Tigers and I don't think he's a very good manager strategically or tactically.  I'm crossing my fingers that Ron Gardenhire can be lured our way like it was rumored a little while back.  As for Caldwell, the Lions are a disaster and almost unwatchable.  We've all seen bad Lions teams, but this one is infuriating.  It's almost like they're trolling us.

question with horrible spelling....Caldwell.  TODAY.

You can't lose to the Bears.  Have you seen the Bears play? They are TERRIBLE!!!

Furthermore, the Lions 3 losses are all to 1-3 teams...whose only wins are to the Lions. Give Austin a test drive.... lose as many as possible and get a top 5 pick next year.

And tomorrow...fire Ausmus!

I certainly hope that the Tigers decide not to exercise their option on Brad Ausmus.  He seems to manage strictly by the book and doesn't have a proper sense of intuition.  This lack of flexibility in his thinking - for instance, being too rigid in only utilizing players in their bullpen "roles" instead of deploying the best strategy for any particular game situation - has cost the team games for years.  Sometimes you just have to win the damn game.

Ausmus is on the complete opposite end of the sprectrum from a guy like Joe Maddon.  I'm a Cubs fan, and that guy is top-notch.  The Tigers need to make their manager an asset for them, not a liability.  They have a talented lineup, and some quality young arms to go with Verlander.  The future is bright.  And will be even brighter with a competent skipper.

The Lions had a chance with Bridgewater's injury and the Packers' aging roster, but don't look like they can seize the day. Still, we're all of four games in, so he probably won't get canned. Ausmus was not the problem with the Tigers this year. Their two big free-agent buys both failed - one somewhat expectedly (Zimmerman, because pitchers both get injured more often and their injuries have more impact on their play) and the other not. Upton has been a sabermetric darling for a long time but his first half looks a lot like one of his brother's bad years, and that's definitely not a good omen. They did better than I thought this year because Verlander reinvented himself and Cabrera and Kinsler held off Father Time again, and then they got good seasons from young pitching. Next year is interesting - the Indians are young and the Royals offense looks old with Gordon trailing Upton on the path downhill, but the Tigers aren't going to get better by standing still. In fact, with every passing day the decline, perhaps catastrophic, for Cabrera, Kinsler and Verlander gets closer. The Tigers are in a bad spot because their window will close, and they're already spending a ton on underperforming players, without a lot of young talent coming up. (Look at Cleveland and compare ages and performance to see what I mean.). Short of discovering the next Mike Trout (and actually developing him and not trading him away) to give them an All-Star bat at rookie prices, they'll have to spend and they might not be able to. There's not a lot of great bets on the market and at some point even the quest for a title will bow before the odds of hitting on a 100M bet on double-zero. Now given all that, they might swap managers anyway, and getting a really good manager might add a whole win to their total over the year. If they can get someone really good that might help.

They both need to go. Ausmus has proven to be a failure. I don't want to hear about injuries, all teams have them. The fact Jiminez wasn't called up brings into question not only Ausmus but Avila. His FA signings were questionable (Pelfrey, bullpen), they really need to clean house.

Caldwell is an embarrassment. The fact that the team is never prepared at the start of the game is really sad, add to that his horrible clock management blunders, that stupid stoic look he seems to always have on his face and his bullshit attitude when being questioned by the media proves he should be fired also.

I say burn them both down.
