OT- What's your favorite Western?

Submitted by Eastside Maize on

I know a lot of people don't care for Westerns but my grandfather got me hooked on war movies and Westerns. My Favorite Western stars Jimmy Stewart and is called "Winchester '73." If you haven't seen it, you should check it out. Some others that I love include

-Stagecoach: Starring a young Duke

-The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Clint

-The Gunfighter: My man Gregory Peck

-Shane: Alan Ladd, a classic

-The Tin Star: with Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins

What say you MGoBrethren?

I grew up with this movie and had a hard time watching lesser Westerns for a long time. Of course, that is partly a problem of chronological perspective. I watched the newer movie first. Silverado doesn't reinvent the genre or expose anything new about the human condition. But it is a blast to watch from beginning to end, with compelling action and good acting. I still love it. One movie I haven't seen but feel I should is the Searchers, which nobody talks about unless they are listing best ever Westerns or even best films (12th on the AFI 100 list, I think). Anyone have thoughts on it?

Sam Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch"..."Butch Cassisy & the Sundance Kid" just doesn't  seem to fit the "western" genre--more of a buddy movie set in the west.

"Now who can argue with that?" "I think we're all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I'm particulary glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age."

Tin Star was a great movie. A couple that come to my mind: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence starring John Wayne, James Stewart and Lee Marvin and How the West Was Won starring just about everyone.

I'm just throwing this out there even though I know it's a TV Show that might become a movie, you HoopleHeads.

Tombstone - Classic lines and my favorite version of the Wyatt Earp legend

The Magnificent Seven - Amazing Cast and great action

Rio Bravo - My favorite John Wayne movie and one of these lists without a John Wayne movie would be wrong.

Blazing Saddles - One of the funniest movies ever made that would not make it half a second into the story pitch today.
