OT: Urban's reaction when 5* recruit told him no thanks

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

KC McDermott was apparently visited by Urban even after he committed to Miami, and this is what he said happened when he told Urban no. Not sure if it's 100% true, but pretty damn funny nonetheless.

''The Urban Meyer thing was just funny to me. He came to my school a week after I told his assistant that I wasn't even interested in them. I told him no to his face, and it's got to be one of the top five reactions of someone ever. His facial expression was just so funny. My coach was tearing up and had to go in his office to laugh...Like the state of shock where the guy has literally never been told no in his life. It literally looked like a kid the first time you tell him 'no, you can't do something.' It looked like he was a baby about to cry. It was so funny.''

If I not mistaken, his two daughters are named, "Summers" and "Eve."

:)

What a jackass that guys seems to be.  I cannot even fathom Hoke being even remotely like that to a recruit.  Hope this info circulates among the elite recruits of the nation.

I thought it was really funny.  First of all, he had told Meyer's assistant that he wasn't interested a week earlier.  Then, Meyer decides that he is going to waltz in and change his mind, just by the sheer force of his personality and position, and gets it thrown back in his face.

McDermott could have been more mature about it, but he's a 17 year old kid going to a school that hates Ohio State for what they consider is a national championship that was stolen by the referees.

All he did was tell the raw, unflitered truth as he saw it.  I'm sure he'll get over that horrible personality flaw as he gets older.

Edit: this was in response to "dr explosion's" comment at the top.

Sounds to me like he didn't even let Urban talk.  If a major program was recruiting me and came a long way to see me, I would at least give them 10 minutes of my time...

I kind of doubt this story is true though...Urban is not going to fly to see some kid that had absolutely no interest in the program.

It’s his school and Urb-ie shows up uninvited. I am way douche-ier to the people who knock on my door trying to sell me [insert religion or product of your choice].

Fair point about thinking long term but I’m more in the camp of GET OFF MY LAWN in this situation. The world has gone soft. IMO

I get irate with people who won't take no for an answer. Like some guy i knew who was into Amway. That's the way i see urban. Every time dude shows up he tries the hard sell. I would have been more like "GO THE FUCK AWAY" than just "no".

Have you ever had a salesperson who won't leave you alone? Some people take advantage of courteous people, so with some you have to be a hard ass about it or they will relentlessly call you or randomly show up at your place of business and talk to your employees and take time out of your life to try and manipulate or in some cases coerce you into doing business despite you already telling them you're not interested over and over... goddamn assholes. And Meyer sounds like that exact type of salesman.

So when someone random knocks on your door asking for money or trying to convert you to some religion you waste both your time and theirs by sitting there and listening to them for 10 minutes before saying no?  Recruits get thousands of hours worth of phone calls, and even more mail that they have to deal with on a daily basis, that is why so many kids commit early because they want to be done with it, and urban is showing up refusing to be done with it.  It's kind of like an ex girlfriend showing up after you say you don't want to see her, you have no obligation to do anything.

So I suppose you take the time to invite every Jehovah's Witness, Mormon missionary, and door to door salesman into your home, because they took precious time out of their day to come all that way out to see you to save your immortal soul or offer you a great deal on a vacuum cleaner?

If I tell you I'm not interested, I'm not interested. You continuing to badger me about it is being incredibly rude, so I'm going to shut you down. That's not being rude, because clearly you either lack the intelligence to understand no means no, or you're deliberately ignoring my wishes, which makes you a douche.

All he said is that he told him no face to face. Where are you getting enough information to determine he was rude?

Exactly. KC McDermott tells Urban Meyer "no" to his face and he's a dick. Drake Harris tells Dantonio "no" through this HS coach and he's a dick. Maybe we should just refrain from speculating about a 17 year old kid's character based solely on 2nd hand accounts of how he (or she) turns people down on offers.

Good point.  Those of your impugning this kid's character, ask yourself this.  When a telemarketer calls you up trying to sell you random product or service and you respond "no, thank you", only to be further given the sales pitch, are you; A:  annoyed and pissed off, or B:  pleased and flattered?

Some people find continuous pressure to listen to sales pitches irritating and uncomfortable, regardless of who is giving them.  Football recruits are no different.  If they were, then no kid would ever give an early verbal commitment.

Frankly, the fact that Meyer thought he could fly down there and change this kid's mind is the height of hubris and probably a big reason why people think he's a dick.

Now suppose you get interviewed about your experience with the telemarketer and you give the above response, except in the finished article the report is, "When triangle_M was contacted by the telemarketer, his response was to abrupty hang up".

Does that make you seem like a reasonable person or a dickhead?

Reasonable person. The phone is there for my convenience and I treat it like it is my device, and not the property of a marketing company.  When my wife or kids call I answer, if my boss calls and its after work hours, I'll think about answering.  If I don't know who it is, it just gets dumped. If its important, they will call back.

Either that kid is a total douche or this is the worst fake ever, because that sounds like a terribly politically incorrect thing for him to say.

It's the fact that he just openly says all of that to the media. Usually people just let things like that go and don't act like that. As much as I don't like Meyer, I doubt I would just tell the media (slightly exaggerated) "Oh, I told him no and he CRIED! Lol my coach went and laughed too and Urbz looked like a baby!" That just says douchy to me.
