OT: today’s bowl games, will you be watching?

Submitted by Amazinblu on January 2nd, 2023 at 9:06 AM

There are a number of bowl games being played today.  Three B1G teams will play.  Will you be watching / following any of them?

Three earlier starts…

At noon (EST), Illinois at MSU (Mississippi State, not the Spartans)

At 1:00 (EST) pm, Tulane vs USC, and Purdue vs LSU.

At 5:00 pm EST, the Rose Bowl with Penn State playing Utah.

I’m still recovering from the Fiesta Bowl and will be getting the kids set to get back at Ann Arbor.  Not too interested in today’s games.  They’ll be on in the background, but I doubt I’ll follow any game closely.

I'll turn them on in the background.  Like everyone else, still pretty down about the game but have already moved on for the most part.  Years ago I decided that I'll give myself a few hours to brood after a dong punch game.  But I've upgraded since to the high end stainless steel 'Dong Protector 2000, with MOAR Dong Protection', and can now recover from said punches within an hour, or so.  Still sucks, still sad, but no longer fuming at everyone.

Maybe I'm just an excessively experienced Michigan Dong Punchee having been a fan since the early 70's - before most people here were born?  Or maybe I've just learned to deal with it differently?

I'm like you in that I brood for a little while, but by the morning, I was over it. It sucks, but life's too short to sit around and be upset about something over which I have zero control over. I just try to enjoy the games when possible.

It also helps that I stay off the boards and internet for the most part. I always get a little bored around this time of year, but otherwise I try to steer clear from the chatter and just watch the games. I don't listen to sports talk either or watch anything on FS1 or ESPN other than the games themselves.

As for today, I'll still watch. CFB is the greatest sport and I can't quit it. It's my drug. I still love the Rose Bowl too. As I said in the NFL thread yesterday, I wasn't thinking, and I woke up pumped yesterday to watch some football.

I agree about good football conversation. The cascade of dumb takes after losses is just exhausting. Often from guys who never, ever contribute anything at any other time.

The sticky snowflake threads *have* cleaned up the board a bit in the last couple of years, meta-wise. Things were more challenging before. One idea from a previous, more chaotic iteration of the board's postgame state was a thread with a higher (say, 1000 or so) point threshold to post that would allow the more established accounts to interact and share thoughts about the game without wading through all the craziness. Even when we disagree, even vehemently, accounts that know each other can interact more substantively.

I've been dealing with this since the Rose Bowl loss in 1970. Bo was in the hospital after the huge upset of OSU that put Michigan back on the college football map. Bo was Jim's coach, and he taught him well. Play fundamental football, stick to your principles, win the Big Ten conference, lose your bowl game. Gary Moeller took over and immediately upgraded the offense. He recruited much better than Bo, and he wasn't afraid to unleash that talent. Maybe we'll get another Gary Moeller someday.

I was think the same thing yesterday.  Jim had his "what would I do if I were Bo" hat on during the game.

During the 70's the game that got us to the Rose Bowl was never competitive against the west coast schools.

We seemed unprepared for TCU and TCU was very well prepared for us.

The Moeller offenses were more balanced than Bo's run based offense and it helped in the bowls.  We did lose to the steroid enhanced Washington team in the 92 Rose Bowl but otherwise we looked good.

In the 1992 Rose Bowl, the Huskies were led by the juiced to the gills Steve Emtman. He played his way into being a local legend and the first overall pick in the NFL Draft.

The Huskies completed a perfect season and split the natty with an all-time Miami Hurricanes team. That Washington team was probably their best ever.

The following season the Huskies lost Emtman and a few other key players, though Huard was an able fill-in for Hoebert at QB.

Michigan was able to avenge the '92 Rose Bowl loss in the '93 Rose Bowl by a final score of 38-31.

I doubt I'll watch any of them, but I might stay tuned to progress on some of them.

I'd like to see Purdue beat LSU, mostly because (a) Big Ten, and (b) anti-SEC.

I guess Illinois over Mississippi State for the same reason.

For the Rose Bowl, Utah over Penn State.  My pro-B1G bias is not enough; it's Penn State.

Tulane vs. USC ... does anybody care?

Have both of my kids home today, so we’ll probably put one of them on in the background but I won’t be focused on them. Interested to see how Purdue does with LSU.

I can’t say I’ll ever root for Penn State. James Franklin is the ultimate scumbag. He negative recruits Michigan hard every year. He looks at women as property. He fits Penn States dirty culture very well.

MJ - when your kids are "away" - are they at college, or working / living away / married / on to their next phase of life?

I have twins - both are students at Michigan.  They'll be leaving in a couple of hours - heading back to Ann Arbor to begin the winter semester (classes start on Wednesday).

It's been fantastic having them home.   We see them often in the fall - with home games, tailgates, etc.   In the winter, we still get to Ann Arbor for weekend visits - but, basketball or hockey weekends (though they are great) - don't capture the energy of a tailgate / home football game weekend - hanging out with friends, parents weekend, etc..

I hope your kids have a safe trip "home" - to wherever their final destination is.

Go Blue!

Our youngest is a Sr at UM.  The last 2 years have been fantastic for football, especially post 2020 which of course was painful in so many ways with COVID, unwatchable football, etc.

We all watched The Game together in A2 (to minimize her travel time and maximize our fun time), went to Indy for the championship and then watched the CFP together.  Painful last game to watch but memories for a lifetime.

She also just headed out the door on her way back to A2 for her last semester.  Safe travels to all and best wishes for a fantastic 2023!

Yes, I'll be watching, starting with tuning in for the Tournament of Roses Parade at 11am. Local ties there, as the Rockford High Marching Band is the 34th unit in the parade.

I'm interested a bit in each game because they all involve a B1G team (including future member USC), and because two games are vs SEC teams, but I won't sit thru the entirety of any of these games other than the Rose Bowl.

My youngest actually has school today, so I've already been up for hours and am starting to get antsy without work to do.

Truthfully though, I'm more interested in the Winter Classic at Fenway today than any football game. It's going to take me another week to be ready for college football again, but I'll be ready, rooting for the horned frogs

Doing stuff with the family (please read that word in Brian Kelly’s fake southern accident) today.  I will probably watch as time allows.  I’ll try to catch the end of the Rose bowl to see how Frames is doing.

My hunger for football is a bit sapped right now, as it often is after Michigan's season ends, and moreso after the way it ended and the stakes we missed out on. (As RobF said very early Sunday morning, though, while the OSU loss was a *small* consolation, it was some consolation nonetheless).

I have no desire to fill my day watching the sport right now.

But the Rose Bowl is the Rose Bowl and I will probably flip on at least some of it. Because it's the Rose Bowl, and there's nothing like it.

For sports diversions, I'm going to spend more time following Dakar and soccer for a bit. I'll pay close attention to the Lions-Packers and then I'll follow the NFL playoff race, because football fans do, but then I'll appreciate the long offseason that allows football fans to stew and rekindle that hunger. When the late days of August are rolling through the calendar, I'll be ready again.

I might watch a little (probably the Rose Bowl).  But it just seems wrong that these games go on after the Playoff semifinals.  College basketball doesn't play NIT games in the middle of the Final Four.

Absolutely!  I love college football, and this is the end of it this season. While I’d like to have seen Michigan win Saturday, it doesn’t really change anything in my life. (On this blog, I must be the equivalent of the Fansville dude skipping stones)
