OT: Rick Pitino Rumored to be Candidate for Detroit Mercy Job

Submitted by MGoBlue7523 on
The Detroit Mercy coaching search continues to wind all over the map...Would fit the "small, Catholic" school profile that Pitino is said to be looking for. However, UDM is an Adidas school so that would seem to create some conflicts.

If nothing else, think how it would strain Tom Izzos salary cap to have to outbid Pitino on recruits? That entertainment alone would make it worth it.

Michigan may have the least amount of days with sunlight in the US due to the cloud cover generated by the Great Lakes.  Almost perfect vampire conditions.

Depaul, Boston College, or any of those crappy East Coast Catholic mid-level teams like St. Josephs.  Maybe even back to Providence.

Keep him out of Detroit Mercy.  Don't want him poaching our SE Michigan talent....

One of these is not like the others:

New York Knicks

Kentucky

Boston Celtics

Louisville

University of Detroit-Mercy

Pitino has spent the last three decades at the pinnacle of collegiate and pro basketball. Anybody who thinks he's going to suddenly join a minor program in a minor conference in a city that the vast majority of the country—unfairly or not—thinks is a quintessential urban hellhole is huffing grocery bags of airplane glue.

One of these is not like the others as well. Can you guess who the coach is?

Kansas Jayhawks - Won national title

San Antonio Spurs

LA Clippers

Indiana Pacers

Philadelphia 76ers

Detroit Pistons - Won NBA title

New York Knicks

Charlotte Bobcats

Southern Methodist University

I wouldn't necessarily doubt Pitino to UDM.

Pitino admitted his agent approached Siena about their job, Siena.

Who's going to hire Pitino? I don't think UDM is, but if he wants to keep coaching, he's going to have to lower those standards by more than a little. His agent is keeping his name out there, hoping for a nibble. He's not doing it on his own.

Does Pitino intend to take a job like UMD or does having his name as a candidate somehow validate him as an employable coach? I can only guess that he'll take what he can get.

Growing up in suburban Detroit, and then returning downtown after a 15 year hiatus, and was shocked how nice its getting...shocked....   and my first reflex in seeing Pitino considering UDM to coach, makes me wonder if it is a good sign Detroit is back.  I'll be surprised if he takes the job, but if he does, this is a good thing.

Oh, that's all we need downriver.....the ACTUAL Rick Pitino.

In all seriousness though, I can't see Pitino ending up at Detroit Mercy, or really anywhere at this point. At this point, what is the motivation for any school to even seriously consider him?

On one hand I think-how could anyone allow this guy to coach even a pick up game in the neighborhood and as much as I dislike all of the controversy surrounding him, I would love for UDM to get him. It would mean that UDM would quickly become elite in their conference as he would attract big-time talent.  I could see them makking frequent tournament appearances in a few years. Like him, or love him, he's a historically popular figure in the world of basketball and the city of Detroit could use some added excitement downtown.
