OT: Purdue plays their Card at QB

Submitted by iawolve on December 27th, 2022 at 1:28 PM

Interesting transfer get for Purdue. Card was highly rated coming out of HS and is a real dual threat, did not see him play at UT so don't know how he looked there. I am sure having Drew Brees helping coach the bowl game did not hurt in getting another a fellow Austin HS phenom QB to join the Boilers. At a minimum, the coaching additions and transfers will make the West more interesting next year.

Ewers is a better QB but what I saw of both of them this year it felt like neither QB was particularly good in that offense when tasked with facing good defenses (I guess save the first half against Alabama).  That offense went through Robinson so much that it'll be interesting to see how they look next year.

He was thrown into the fire this year with virtually no prep when Ewers went out with an injury early in the Bama game.  I thought he played well, even though Sark didn't change the offense one bit to take advantage of the differences between him and Ewers.  Purdue should be happy...

Hudson Card was a 4* coming out of high school.

If he can play as well as he is supposed to play (according to those who make the rankings), then it makes the Big 10 West stronger.

We need to have a stronger Big 10 West, and recent developments (new coaches, new teams) indicate that the West is progressing.

Yes I know Purdue was in the recent Big 10 Championship, and of course, Purdue needs to build around him, but it this a good start. Especially with a new head coach coming in to their system.

I watched most of Card’s games this year. Unless he makes a leap, he’s not the type of player to elevate the program. I can see another 8-4.

Card (and Ewers) have both been pretty underwhelming. Sark's fault? Probably at least somewhat. Even Ewers might be gone if Arch takes his job. Will be interesting to see guys in different situations to assess blame for Texas's umpteenth underperforming season.

Players in portal

Outbound: No great loss, couldnt win starting job, overrated in HS, never realized potential

Inbound: Poorly coached, great get, will fit right in, underutilized

Same guy.

This is why the portal (AKA transferring without sitting out a year) is so good though. If someone can't realize their potential at a blue blood like Texas, they can get another shot at a lesser program like Purdue that is still in the Power 5 and even won their division last year (albeit one that was historically bad). Before, someone like Card would either have to sit out a year or stay at Texas and essentially give up on football and work toward his degree.

Depends when divisions actually cease to exist. If they linger for a few years, than yes, since Rhule and Fickell will turn their programs around and USC is coming. If they cease to exist when USC and UCLA get here, then no but only because they didn't have enough time to turn it around from where they were last year.

I will say that, thanks to the Transfer Portal, this time of the year in college football will now always look like the Wife Swapping sketch from Monty Python's Flying Circus.

In all seriousness, I've talked to one or two fans of Texas and they weren't all that high on Hudson Card, not that they saw much of him, of course. Having Brees around certainly won't hurt.

I think he'll be pretty solid at Purdue. They will keep the passing attack and use Card's legs more than they could with Aidan. Graham Harrell is a good OC. This will be a fun (challenging) offense to face the next two years. This year, I never worried about the QB running with the ball in B1G game. He could end up being a solid dual threat like McSorley was for PSU.

Interesting thing is IF (and a big IF with an underrated TCU and a great UGA team) we can win out this year. The schedule next year for the 1st 8 games has some road challenges (Nebr, MSU, Minny)  - but if we win the first 8 --> we will be playing Card and Purdue in A2 for the chance to win 1000.

Meanwhile, back to Friday and the biggest game we've had as a favorite.
