OT: Parallels between 08-09 Florida and 14-15 Ohio State

Submitted by DavidP814 on

Watching yesterday's Ohio State game, I was reminded of how Urban's 2009 Florida Gators team sleepwalked through most of their regular season.  After doing a little research, I discovered some uncanny parallels between Meyer's 2 Gators teams from the 08-09 seasons and Meyer's Buckeye teams from this season and last:

- Early season upset loss as a heavy home favorite (Ole Miss/VaTech)

- Dominating offensive performances in every regular season game after upset loss.

- Victory in national semifinal over Saban's Crimson Tide (SEC Champ that year was a de facto national semifinal, as Tide and Gators were #1/#2).

- Victory in national championship game over Heisman-winning quarterback (Bradford/Mariota).

- Loss star of offensive coordinator over off-season (Mullen/Herman).

- Historical consensus as No. 1 team in AP poll entering following season (09 FL held the record for highest percentage of first place votes in AP poll until this season, when Ohio State became the first team to garner a unanimous No. 1 ranking).

- Apparently easy regular season schedule one Top 5 opponent and no other ranked teams (hard to believe given SEC's hype over the last decade, but LSU was the only regular season opponent ranked at the time Florida played them).

Clearly, some of these paralles are merely coincidental, but a few (the dominating end to the season before, the loss of the OC, the pre-season expectations, the "easy" regular season schedule, and obviously the head coach) may be meaningful.  If Derrick Henry wins the Heisman trophy and Bama beats the Buckeyes on New Year's Eve, I'll be convinced time is a flat circle.

than I would ever opt to do. Who would have thunk I'd read it here. And, to think you must have read a lot more about this. The only reason I had to see this is cause of you so, Fuck you.

you realize the "star" OC has been urban meyer all along right?

he may not necessarily call all plays and the OCs still make big impacts (just like with most other programs) but meyer molds and adjusts the O, he builds the teams as he envisions, meyer influences game planning, play scripting, situational calls, etc, they use his base structure to build the check / audible game and make QB friendly reads and throws - i think hes kind of a dirt bag but the dudes prints are all over those Os and the OCs coming and going and their impact should be not be overstated

OSU's wins over Michigan and PSU last year featured a "dominating" offensive performance? You have clearly got to be a full time bottom if you think those were dominating.

And Urban Meyer's secretary at Florida was named Lincoln and warned him not to go to Dallas, and his secretary at Columbus is named Kennedy and told him not to go see the play, or something like that.
