OT: MNF Justin Fields rant

Submitted by WindyCityBlue on December 20th, 2021 at 8:52 PM

Ok. I’m a Bears fan (yea, username checks out), so let me rant here.

Justin Fields absolutely blows. WTF!!! It is so frustrating that with all the success OSU QBs have in college, they can’t seem to muster out something halfway decent in the pros.

I'll tell you this much: this game (re)confirms that I am glad the Lions took Sewell instead of Fields.

I know Fields has physical talent and can make plays, but he is loose with the ball, only somewhat accurate, and makes dumb decisions. For example, that semi-busted play on 4th and 1 at the end of the 3rd. Under no circumstances do you eat the ball when you are down 14, but instead of throwing it (and there was a WR wide open in the end zone, tho I sort of understand Fields wasn't looking deep), he just takes the loss.

That play was busted from before the snap.  Of course we all yell "just throw the ball up" as there's no consequences.  It's really easy to do for us as if there isn't any nuance to playing QB out there.  Also...there are such things as pick-6s and the just throw it up CAN in fact backfire.

I really don't know why I'm sticking of for Fields but it boils down to, I see more from him than others are and the franchise he plays for I think masks his abilities, and of course where he came from bugs people of our ilk.  But that shitty, mistake-ridden game could've easily come down to the last drive if old-ass Jimmy Graham could catch a beautifully thrown ball in the endzone.  He made other nice throws that most other team's receivers would've caught, too.  Oh he makes mistakes?!  No shit...he's a rookie.

Mahomes has ruined so many fans' minds.

when it is 4th down and you have an open receiver you SHOULD throw the ball up instead of taking a sack where the other team ends up with better field position, give your WR a chance to make a play instead of eating it and 100% have no chance.

that's true, but he's a rookie.... the other thing he's probably getting coached heavily on is "if you don't have a decent option, don't force it and get picked off"   so in the heat of the game, a split second decision .....   that one time, when you go for it on 4th down,  throw it, doesn't matter if it gets picked off, you're losing possession anyway....

Shit, how many sacks did Cousins take because he held the ball too long?   I can remember a few, none were on 4th down, but he's been in the league for years.

I’m a bears fan too.  Justin fields does not blow. Sorry.  It’s ownership to the gm down to the coach. You win the game on the line, and it would be nice to have some kind of weapon to throw too. There is a reason we have not had a good QB ever….most of it has to do with not putting your players in the best position to succeed or maybe moving up one spot in the draft to pick Mitch tribisky when no one in the world was picking him over maholmes or Watson. I can assure you that if by some grace of god we did pick maholmes or Watson they would not be worth a damn anyway because the bears do not draft well or players to protect them or help them succeed and the coaches are a complete joke.

Fields made some really good throws in the 3rd and 4th quarters.  Some caught some not.  And the ones that weren't, most were arguably "should have beens" and essentially great throws that just weren't.

The Bears suck. Fields receivers at OSU were better. The Bears OL is horrendous; that is why he always has to roll out to buy time. Put Fields on a team like the Browns and he would look a lot better.

The only reason I'm a lions fan is that I grew up in SE MI. I remember after work at my first big job after college, I went to see the '85 bears destroy the Darrel Rogers Lions on a MF event. Even though I'm not a bears fan, I was impressed by their defense when seeing them live.

Came here thinking that I was about to read about a post-game rant from Justin Fields and learned that this was just a long thread of arguments between Bears fans and Lions fans with a healthy dose of trivia about the failure of Ohio State quarterbacks in the NFL.

Then, drifting way off-topic, I realized that, as of now, four of the top eight picks in the 2022 NFL Draft belong to the two New York teams that play in a stadium in New Jersey, making the Buffalo Bills the only NFL team that’s got its home stadium in New York.

At osu, the QB typically has all day to throw with no pressure. Anyone can look great in that scheme. The minute they have pressure and are worried about getting decimated by a 350 lb lineman they make bad decisions. Very simple explanation on why osu QBs have failed in the NFL, they can’t handle adversity

TBH, fields wasn't that bad last night.  he did miss some throws, but his wr's dropped as many as he missed.  he's a rookie on a shitty team.... he'll make rookie mistakes which are magnified because he's what they have... no running game to help him out, no wr's that are going to make an exceptional catch on a bad pass, its pretty  much all on him and that's a lot to expect out of a rookie.

I'm guessing he flames out, because that's what osu qb's do in the league, but then again he was a Georgia QB before he was an ohio qb.  I think he was originally committed to penn state, wasn't he?

Idk man, this seems like a topic for 11w or whatever blog Bears fans congregate on. It’s pretty irrelevant to everyone here what an OSU QB does after college.

Justin Fields is not the problem—his numbers have improved more all season than either Lawrence or Wilson. There were, once again, three to four drops, an incomplete that could’ve been a TD (shin down), and a rookie LT who was on IR for most of the season and is having multiple mistakes in his first start.

Similar to Michigan in 2020, where mistakes did in the offense that could drive down the field and stall—the Bears need an OC who builds around Fields.

Fields needs to learn ball control, but so did Kirk Cousins when he was in his first few years. When they are in hurry up and he controls the calls, the team moves down the field. When they get in the red zone and Nagy calls the plays, they stall.

He made the right choice to run on quite a few dropbacks where the pressure was too much—used his speed and strength to avoid sacks. He also moved up in the pocket more and kept his eyes down field and threw to some open guys.

James Daniels and Mustipher are prone to missing a block or two each game against DTs that causes a sack or TFL.

The Bears need a coach who instills discipline. They need an OC who lets Fields call plays and focuses on recognizing blitzes and the unblocked guy—which he is already improved on from preseason.

The he’s-just-a-rookie and the-problem-is-the-Bears arguments are obviously correct, but they ignore some key points:

  • Not every rookie has a 25 QBR, which is quite bad.
  • Those who have performed that poorly have gone on to disappointing careers.
  • It doesn’t matter whether Fields would be fine if he were on a different team. He’s stuck with Chicago.

On that last point: Chicago will surely have a new coaching staff next season. So there will be a new offense to learn. There’s a strong chance there’ll be a new GM too. If so, the organization will be run by people who didn’t draft Fields.

Yes, rookies often struggle, but you can’t just write off the results and the dynamic as irrelevant. Zach Wilson and the Jets are another interesting case. You could say, hey, he’s just a rookie, but if a parade of journeymen are outperforming him, and if his play dissuades free agents from signing, that’s a problem.

How as a Michigan fan could you even cheer for an OSU QB to be halfway decent in the pros? Bears fan or not, cheer for them to get good with someone else at QB.

I am a Lions fan, but had lived in the Chicago area for the past five years and the Bears obviously came up a lot. Talking with friends and coworkers, I never thought the Fields pick would work because of all the OSU QB history in the NFL. But, I don't think he is the problem. To me, the pick was obviously a last ditch effort by Pace and Nagy to try and save their jobs in Chicago. And, as expected, it didn't work out. Ownership didn't have the balls to cut ties with them last season and now it's likely cost them a few premium draft picks that could have been used elsewhere.

Why OSU QBs are all failures in the NFL? Because their offense requires exactly 0 post-snap reads. Their QBs get fat and happy on easy passes to NFL WRs on pre-determined routes, and handoffs to NFL RBs behind an NFL OL. Then in one day, they had to make serious reads to WRs going up against equally talented DBs while standing behind a line going up against an equally talented defensive line. None of the QBs have been mentally prepared.
