OT: Last Chance U Season 5

Submitted by bassclefstef on July 28th, 2020 at 11:41 PM

I know we had a thread a week or so ago about the trailer for season 5 dropping, but has anyone watched it yet? We just started this evening, and we're just about done with the 3rd episode. Coach Beam is a much easier guy to root for so far than either Buddy Stephens or Jason Brown, in my opinion. Anyone else watching it?

Just started. I completely agree about Bream. He seems to really root for his players instead of using them.

The other thing that caught my eye was that Laney has no scholarships or dorms and these students can't afford to live near campus. These students have it way tougher than in past seasons.

The paradox of those first 4 seasons was that I usually found myself rooting for the players to win while rooting against their coaches.

Jason Brown was as easy to root against as his players were to root for. They had to succeed DESPITE him. Which is kind of sad, actually. But the most interesting part of the Indy JC shows was the realization in season 2 that Brown was a great recruiter but very inept with the Xs and Os part. The overweening arrogance was a cover for that simple fact and that's what ultimately doomed him. Anyway, Beam seems awesome and genuine. And you've still got to root for the kids.

3 episodes in as well and so far it's my favorite season. Love the coach, players seem to be good kids with a pure love of football. The structure of juco is so different in california, that it's almost hard to compare with other seasons. Definitely gonna miss this show, but the seasons covering basketball should be excellent.

Just started episode 1. I like Dior so far and thought I would like Rej until he talked back to beam about gas money after skipping class. Take some responsibility bro.

Waiting for my power to come back on so I can resume.

Beam is deadly with that quarter in the palm game.

The show is a lot more fun to watch when the coach isn't a total piece of shit. I haven't really developed the same relationship with the kids after 2 eps this time around, but it's nice to watch a version of the show where the coach seems to be an effective leader.

Enjoyed the show, because the coach wasn't an absolute tool like in other seasons.

I found the themes this season to be far more political, particularly towards the last few episodes. Much more discussion of crime, policing, and the gentrification of Oakland due to housing costs and tech boom.

I'm guessing some of this shift due to editing happening 2-3 months ago - i.e. during the protests - and the producers wanted to participate in the national discussion.
