OT: Lane Kiffin in Talks to be FAU's Head Coach

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

ESPN is reporting that Lane Kiffin is in talks to be the new head coach at FAU, which I believe stands for Florida Atlantic University. Story is here.

Man, he keeps lowering his standards. Couldn't find an HC job with a Power 5 school, couldn't find a job with a good Group of 5 school, so now he's down to this. If FAU doesn't work out, he's going to contact Cheboygan High School.

I'll always remember his introductory press conference when he was hired as the Raiders head coach. He looked like a deer in the headlights and his "I will bring a high powered, explosive offense" bit was just so unconfident. Haha I dunno

My buddy here wants him to replace Rhule who left for Baylor. At first I was like he is not taking that much of a pay cut. Temple was paying Rhule 1.5mil and that was a lot for them.

At this point though, They may want a name to continue the momentum they have built up. They are trying to build a 30k seat stadium on campus and need some juice to get that project over the hump.

No paycut for Kiffin were he to get Temple job at same $1.5 million salary. His salary at Alabama is $1.4 million. Wherever he goes it'll be a dumpster fire within 2-3 years. Whenever he is a HC he is the cancer in the locker room. He needs a good coach to direct him and keep him under control.

College co-ed: "Hey, aren't you Joey Freshwater? I've heard lots about you!"

Kiffin: "Ha, ha. No. I wish I had Joey Freshwater's cachet. I'm Jimmy Saltwater; pleased to meet you."

Good. That is a dead end job. What an idiot if he takes that job. I'd rather remain a coordinator at Alabama and keep competing for titles.

You're assuming he can remain as OC at Alabama.  And seeing that he's actively looking at other jobs, including HC at FAU, I think you're assumption may be wrong.  I have to wonder why, though...  Saban recommends him to be a HC, yet he brought in Sarkision for some reason, and all of a sudden Kiffen is frantically looking for a job.  It just doesn't appear, to me, that everything in Tuscaloosa is unicorns and honeypots...

That's not how I would put it. He's looking to be a HC again and apparently was pretty close to getting the Houston job. That would be a big step up from where he is now. FAU is perhaps a small step up. Meanwhile, Orgeron wants him at LSU and would give hime a raise and more autonomy. I don't think he is or will need to look for any position a step down from where he is now.

Why am I imagining this headline to the effect of "Local District Makes Cuts To Athletics, Hires Lane Kiffin"? That seems like the sort of situation he is eventually destined to take on.

I guess if he really wants to be an HC and he's not exactly in demand for that particular position, you would go with a place like FAU. Otherwise, this is just a weird move.

Quite right, gents. That was tasteless and not in the holiday spirit. They had nothing close to a 3 game win streak, let alone 43, when I played them, but perhaps I'm still bitter about a close loss on the road there.

I do recall two dynamite basketball players within the last 15 or so years - Bill Johnson and Brian Kujala (sp?). Might have been late 90s. Those two could fill the bucket up like you wouldn't believe.

Kiffin in South Florida is a disaster waiting to happen.

Houston was a great fit. Folks in Texas put up with a little more and it's an NFL city.

At this point he needs to just stay on at Bama another year.

FAU is in Boca, there's nothing in Boca - he's going to be STARVING for attention in a town that simply doesn't give a fuck. They'd rather go play golf or tennis, check the stock market, and hang out on their boats. Oh and also be rich snobby assholes....wait, maybe he will fit.

In all seriousness, no way this works, IMO. Kiffin needs to be in a city that cares about football. Now he's going to be doing all of that "look at me crap" because no one down there cares.

Houston was the answer or wait for a job to open up on the west coast. Fresno State would've been perfect since he played and coached there.

Maturity seems an issue for LK as an outside looking at the results of his tenure positions.  Maybe he rose too fast I don't know.  He just seems to be lacking something in the leadership area but maybe it was his youth.

Enough with these fake news stories.  It didn't make sense for him to go to Houston and it doesn't make sense for him to go to FAU.

He can coach wherever he damn wants to and he isn't going there.

No, actually he can't. He can't even stay at his current position because he poked the bear.

Whoever is managing Kiffin's affairs isn't doing very good, in my meaningless opinion. Flirting with LSU's OC vacancy felt like a slap in Saban's face. Even if the rumors were falase, having his name connected to a lateral position with your rival is bad business. Seems like Lane and his people oversold his value. Now, he's got no more Bama gig. No LSU gig. No Houston gig. He's stooped to praying for the FAU gig.

Moral of the story: don't cross Saban. He'll let you ride his coattails as long as you're a team player. Piss him off and he'll squish you like a bug.

He would never have gotten the Raiders gig if he weren't Monte Kiffin's son, and he would never have gotten the Tennessee and USC jobs if he hadn't been HC with the Raiders.

He's not a bad OC, but he's a dickhead who can't seem to stop looking for his next coaching gig as soon as he has a new one.
