O.T G.O.A.T Video Games

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on

What are your top 5 video games of all time? Criteria is as follows; 1. Must be on a current or past major platform, no pc and no arcade. 2. Must be a specific game and not just a franchise / series.

In order.. mine are

1. Tecmo Super Bowl for NES

2. Mario Kart for SNES

3. NHL 94 for SNES

4. NCAA 06 for PS2

5. Red Dead Redemption PS3

I’m going to mention 2 PC games because I am just a crazy rule-breaker. I played Warcraft Orcs and Humans, and Civilization III more times than I care to admit. The original Warcraft was groundbreaking. My friend actually brought his entire computer over to my apartment so we could play the game together. Now that multiplayer game stuff is all online as my son daily reminds me.

Too many to list, here are some of my all time faves, in no particular prder:

Final Fantasy 7 (PS)

Tecmo Super Bowl (SNES)

Dark souls (PS)

Bloodborne (PS4)

Super Mario World (SNES)

The souls series is probably my all time favorite series, and I loved NCAA foorball, I wish they would bring that back, stupid EA.

Games I’ve had the most fun playing:

  • Tecmo Super Bowl
  • Madden
  • NCAA
  • KOTOR
  • GTA IV and Vice City
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Goldeneye
  • Perfect Dark
  • Halo
  • FIFA
  • Super Mario Kart

Best games ever:

  1.  Final Fantasy VII - production, story, gameplay, characters, attacks, spells, side quests, mechanics—this game was nearly flawless and advanced the genre as much as the original
  2.  The Legend of Zelda—Groundbreaking RPG
  3. Super Tecmo Bowl—Took the sports genre from arcade to simulation
  4. Goldeneye—Father of all modern multiplayer shooters
  5. Super Mario Kart—This is underrated as a GOAT. A game that just inspires pure joy and is a great racer and battle game.

Taking a slightly different approach because I mostly just play sports games.

Hockey: NHL 94, Super Nintendo

Football: NCAA, any year, any platform. Bring it back.

Basketball: NBA 2K11, XBox 360

Baseball: MVP Baseball 05, Gamecube

Non sports: Super Ghouls and Ghosts, Super Nintendo

Mega Man 2. Castlevania 3. Super Mario World. Street Fighter II: Turbo. Goldeneye. EA NCAA football.

And, old man that I am, I am surprised to say that I find Breath of the Wild to be the most satisfying game I've ever played.

Oh man.  This isn't in an order based on favorite, but more chronological.  What game was dominating my life before I had kids.  I barely play anymore.

1. NHL 94

2. Final Fantasy VII -  I played this so much I lost my soccer scholarship and got kicked out of Alma College because I am an idiot

3. The NCAA Football series - they became interchangeable to me as I got them every year.

4. God of War - always liked greek mythology

5. College Hoops 2k8

6. The Elder Scrolls Series - Can't pick a favorite, I started with Morrowind on the computer and transitioned to console with Oblivion and Skyrim.

7. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag - my favorite of the series

8. The Last of Us

9. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Probably my favorite game ever, literally played this exclusively for about a year with all the DLC

10. Horizon Zero Dawn - made me want to carve out time to play after I had kids.

If I'm being totally honest I'm an Elder Scrolls nerd, so I'd probably rank all of the Elder Scrolls in reverse order with no rules.  Playing by your rules I'll go with this:

1.) Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (XB1)

2.) Madden 2011 (with Fitz and Polamalu on the cover) (XB360)

3.) NHL 94 (SNES)

4.) WCW vs NWO (N64)

5.) FIFA 18 (XB1)

There are so many others: ES IV: Oblivion, ES III: Morrowind, ES II: Daggerfall, ES I: Arena, any of the FIFAs from the last 5 years, Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, Madden 10, Madden 06, Madden 04, NCAA Football (any year from 2000-2014), Overwatch, March Madness 08, NBA 2k series for the last five years has been amazing (especially career mode), Tiger Woods 2002 (gotta love the Tiger zone heartbeat), Blades of Steel, Contras 1 and 2, Bubble Bobble (nostalgia playing with my sister), Mortal Kombat, Sim City 2000, Super Mario Bros 1-3, Super Mario Kart,  Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, any Civilization game, Diablo II

Those are just off of the top of my head, there are so many more!  Takes me down memory lane!

Random memories I just have to add (cool story bro I know):

Story 1:

My old man was the best Duck Hunt player in the history of mankind.  No shit, after drinking like 20 Miller Lites he'd take the gun controller as far as the cord would stretch and just merk everything on the screen.  As a tiny child I was amazed, I could sit five feet away and he'd blow my score outta the water EVERYTIME!

Story 2:

My older bro is 10 years older than me and he'd bet his buddies like $10 a game that I could beat them at Blades of Steel.  I can remember being 5-6 years old and just smashing kids in high school at that game and my bro walking away with a bunch of cash at parties he threw.

No love for Bioshock?

I’d say Bioshock is easily top 5 all time, and quite possibly #1. Lots of games are fun to play, but I’d say a game needs to go beyond that to be GOAT level, and Bioshock and Kotor were transcendent experiences.

Others I’d put in there would probably be GTA Vice City, Pokémon (Red/Blue were the originals that got me hooked as a kid, but I’d probably go with Gold/Silver for being the better game), and either Goldeneye or Halo 2.

When it comes to games, I am not picky at all. I enjoy all the AAA titles. Sadly, I missed quite a lot of games because I didn't have a PC that it good enough for gaming but I built one a few months ago and also got myself a gaming keyboard and a mouse. The only thing I need now is a good set of speakers and luckily, there are quite a lot of options, here you can read more about them if you are interested.

You know, it is difficult to point out the best video games because most games I played are good. I think the top 5 games on twitch are really the best or at least, people like them the most. Moreover, if you are playing these games it is easier for you to gain popularity. Of course, this site will help you at the beginning.
