OT: Game Thread - NCAA Women's Final - Iowa vs LSU, "disrespectful"

Submitted by Amazinblu on April 2nd, 2023 at 12:28 PM

The basketball season is coming to a close.  The women finish first - LSU vs Iowa - in the NCAA Final this afternoon at 3:30 pm EDT on ABC.

An article on ESPN caught my eye - because of the word "disrespectful".   This is a link to the article.  https://www.espn.com/womens-college-basketball/story/_/id/36031086/lsu-punish-iowa-disrespectful-defense.   This was interesting to me, since I had not heard the Iowa players or staff refer to LSU in any negative manner.  Iowa has essentially said - "We have done well, and have a great opportunity in front of us."

The key to the article, IMO, is - Iowa needed to adjust their defensive strategy against South Carolina for their semi-final game.   Iowa assessed South Carolina's offensive strengths and implemented a scheme to protect / focus on the paint and interior game - giving South Carolina the perimeter / three point line and beyond.   This strategy worked for the Hawkeyes, they defeated SC, and are playing LSU for all the marbles.

The LSU players interviewed in the article are calling out Iowa for being "disrespectful".   Mind you, these are LSU women are saying that Iowa's defensive strategy against South Carolina (not LSU) - was "disrespectful".

Maybe it's me - maybe I'm old school - but, I find those comments to be absurd.

I'm not an Iowa fan - but, after seeing the antics of LSU against Michigan recently, I'll be cheering for the Hawkeyes later today.

I hope the game is well played - the officiating is balanced - and the game's called "the same way, both ways."

Enjoy...

Your claim indicates multiple cases:

All of the race-baiters are coming out of the closet today. This is good to see. I know who not to deal with around here now

Now re-read what I said and at least try applying a little reading comprehension if you could.

Then follow that thought experiment with your email to Seth and include ALL the race-baiters in said email.

Uhh, I don't care to email anyone about some race-baiters. I don't even know who Seth is. I have no idea who runs, owns, or moderates this site. I don't even care. Just as I don't know or care who runs Maize and Brew, or prideofdetroit. I'm totally uninterested in the personal squabbles I see around here and at other sites. When I see behavior that I find objectionable, I do exactly what I said - I choose to not deal with them. And, based on this thread, I've identified several race-baiters that I won't be dealing with.

This blog might be your lives, but it's not mine. I come here, MnB, POD during down time to chat some sports. When I go to games, I don't look to hang out with the MGoBoard folks. I go with my former classmates, or with family and enjoy myself. So, whoever Seth is, and whoever you are, you can have the email convo to yourselves, because I don't care enough to. I've got 60 Minutes and Yellowjackets to watch tonight, you keep chatting with the race-baiters on here.

You've been here since 2018 and never look at nor read the front page articles and notice who many of them written by?  Have you never looked at the board FAQ or the moderator page he monitors daily?

Seth is none other than the managing editor and the person who makes the tough decisions around here.  Present your evidence and don't hold back.  He'll respond accordingly.

You boldly made claims and accusations.  Back them up or shut it up.

You have an overinflated sense of importance. Back them up or shut it up. LOL Dude get over yourself. You care way too much. Go back and read the example that you YOURSELF claimed to read. And, no, I don't know who Seth is, and I rarely read the front page, and definitely not the byline. This ain't the NYT, dude!

I care enough to defend myself. I don't care enough to email the principal. Further, I've already watched 60 Minutes and Yellowjackets isn't until 9pm. I did some news reading and now I'm back for a moment. Now, if you doubt my claim, you can go read page 2, as well. 2 posters insinuated that the refereeing was due to black refs discriminating against white Iowa players. So, obviously you haven't read the whole thread because the race-baiting is right there on page 2. A couple posters called it out (myself included). Others either ignored it, didn't see it, or don't care. Which one are you?

I'm back.

Other than a quick glance shortly after 9, I've been busy with things I'd rather do than be here constantly moderating the MGoBoard.

I'll answer more fully your above question after taking a run thru the entire thread---but I can assure you you're NOT near the top of my to-do priorities list.

From what I recall it was in either the 2nd or 3rd page that I much earlier spotted---and, I believe, negged---a questionable comment that made race-related negative insinuations.  So yeah, it very well may have been the same comment you now refer to.

------------

Since I now have the "podium"  I'll now address the other part of the current situation, and I won't mince words:

You made some very serious accusations a few hours ago that I disagreed with at the time and at this time still disagree with. Whatever I find upon my inspection, I'll deal it fairly and accordingly.  I've been wrong before as a moderator and I'll be wrong again, and any time it has ever previously happened, I've admitted my mistake or faulty decision and moved forward.

It's pretty obvious that you're sticking to your accusations that several people were engaged in "race-baiting"; what I don't get is that in light of such serious accusations, you refuse to take the next step.

I asked you to contact Seth, but so far you stubbornly balk at the idea.  He runs this operation---not me nor any of the other UNPAID VOLUNTARY MODERATORS. Seth reached out to me about 4 years ago asking me to moderate the board; he's provided the guidelines we all follow in our duties. At times over the last 4 years he's contacted me whenever he's felt the need to get an explanation for a decision or to correct a decision he disagreed with.  He's always had the authority to terminate my moderator duties at any time at his discretion.

If you continue to refuse to contact Seth AND yet continue with complaining about how I'm performing my duties here, then I'll take (within the scope of my duties as spelled out by Seth) whatever actions I feel necessary up to and including (worst case scenario) suspension of your account.  [edit: but only after consultation with Seth, a step I haven't taken yet but may, depends upon how things continue to develop]  At that point the only way you're getting your account restored will be by ... CONTACTING SETH.

The ball is in your court.

I saw the second half of this game and the third officiating wasn’t noticeably worse than the men’s madness games… except for the tech against Clark.

The men’s games have been horribly one sided. One team is allowed to be as physical as wwe while the other can’t fart without a whistle being blown.

The Miami - UConn game seems to be the most similar to the LSU - Iowa game. Miami got within 8 when Wong had a clear 2 on one fast break. He was tackled/tripped at mid-court. No call. Miami is immediately whistled right after for who knows what. That effectively ended the game. Similar to the Clark tech when Iowa was down 7. Both Iowa and Miami probably would’ve lost, but fans were robbed of a good game.

SDSU has had similar issues against both Creighton and FAU. But, we still got buzzer beaters out of the SDSU games.

There haven’t been any officiating threads about the men’s games

I don’t watch women’s hoops, Is it common for the players to act like complete assholes ?  I’m not sure the men could get away with those antics.

Also, Reese winning most outstanding player is a joke. I know they usually award that to some random on the winning team, but she was not the best player in the tournament.

Didn’t watch much of the game, so can’t comment on the officiating.  Saw the ending, no issue with the talking back and forth DURING the game. I grew up playing hockey, chirping comes naturally.

However, big difference with doing it after the game is finished.  Following Clark around the court as the clock is at zero to do more hand waving and ring finger pointing?  Too busy taunting an opponent that you’re the last one to get back celebrating with your team?  It’s a major lapse in sportsmanship and shows a lack of respect for the game.  Sucks because Reese is a damn good player… things happen in the heat of the moment and you learn from it and move on.

What Reese did was classless. Following someone around as the game ends is poor sportswomanship.

However,  Clark is a known trash talker.  So she is no innocent either.

Mulkey is straight trash.

This becoming racial is very predictable and sad. We should be able to criticize each other without race always becoming an element. I understand that there are times when race is an obvious factor(such as calling a black player a thug). But times like this it shouldn’t be.

The US is in need of a psychiatrist.

so angel reese taunted caitlin clark?  i guess?  is that like when caitlin clark did the john cena thing, or is it different?

also - yeah, lsu is infuriating, like all kim mulkey teams, and got a lot of calls.  so we’re just going to forget that iowa got aaliyah boston and zia combs to the bench with foul trouble in the semis? no?  okay then.

My favorite TD celebration is when UM players flick the ball to the official and celebrate with teammates. Same with Barry Sanders.

Imagine Brady getting in the face of a defender pointing to his ring finger or some other juvenile BS as time winds down in a Super Bowl win. During the game whatever, but in an end game scenario in a championship you would think it would be about the team rather than some BS selfish tik tok moment. No other way to see that than petty.

none of which has word one to do with the fact that caitlin clark did the exact same gesture in her game against louisville.  you taunt someone, you best not get all butthurt when it comes back at you.

seriously, why is angel reese doing the cena thing any different?  please, i'd love to know.

Nothing disrespectful about exploiting your opponent's weakness or making them beat you with it (and...SC didn't).

DiSrEsPeKt is used (or at least claimed) too often for motivation in sports, IMO.
