OT: Freddy Canteen Listed as Starter on ND Depth Chart

Submitted by skegemogpoint on

Canteen named starter.  I cannot imagine this is a positive sign for Notre Dame football.

Michigan has much deeper talent right now at the receiver positions than ND.

M has one of the best receiver groups in the nation.  Lots of talent at WR, slot, TE, even H-back.

M has guys that will be 2nd and 3rd string at each of these positions that would start a most schools.  That was Canteen's situation.  He'll probably be a good WR this year for ND.

Can't see the field at Michigan but starts at Notre Dame. That says it all. Good luck to him individually but I hope his new team goes 1-11.

Here's a better approach OP:

"Canteen named starter.  I cannot imagine how this is not a positive sign for him."

Around here, we kind of give a shit about former players, and tend to root for their improvement. And as we've seen, several times, players (e.g., Rawls) make great improvements when the get themselves into a better fitting program. So stop being such a douche.

Canteen was always a player with plenty of talent and one of my "why isn't he making it" leaders. He got a lot of time in 2015 and was genuinely open A LOT. Further, he'd line up in the slot against LBs, with the flat and deep corner areas WIDE OPEN to no route or looks. I'd be at the game and see them running him into traffic play after play, allowing a LB to provide faux coverage via the routes he had to run. Then he disappeared after a move to CB. Last I'd seen he was yoked up! He was looking like David Boston all the sudden (ha). Figured he was kinda done so good for him, nothing but good wishes for that dude.

The three that stick out to me are a trio of guys who were in the NFL while I was in middle school - William Peterson (Now goes by William James) who transferred to W. Illinois after 1998, Justin Fargas, who played for 3 years before transferring to USC for 2002 then playing for the Raiders, and Trevor Pryce, who also did a P5 transfer from Michigan to Clemson, won two Super Bowls with the Broncos, and went to 4 Pro Bowls.

I always wonder how their paths would have changed if they had stayed at Michigan, maybe they wouldn't have sniffed the league, maybe our fortune would have been a little better. Outside of the obvious guys like Mallett, who else from the last 15-25 years has transferred out and gone on to have great success elsewhere and perhaps in the NFL?

I guess it would be my hope that this says less about ND football and more about Canteen finding a place and system that is better for him and his skill set. Granted, the program is not in a happy place and Kelly is under the microscope, but hopefully Canteen has a good season all the same.
