OT: First warm blooded fish identified.
Scientists have discovered that the opah, a deep water fish, is warm blooded. First one ever.
I like this. Because I'm a nerd.
Sharks are most definitely fish, and some species can warm their bodies up to 30 degrees warmer than the water temp...
Sharks are just cartiligenous fish (Chondrichthyes) rather than boney fish (Osteicthyes) like ... well ... most fish (anything that is not a shark, skate, ray, or the like). Apologies for if I did not spell those fish classes correctly - I'm drawing off of h.s. biology here.
I also remember that the bottom scales on snakes are called "scutes". After that, I'm pretty much dry.
sounds like you had a head start on the rest of us.
i always thought porpoise were warm blooded also?
Where did you find that last picture?
I think I have been on that boat before because those guys look familiar. It is either the Western Pride or Freelance.
It's the Western Pride.
"For anyone that has never tasted opah... "
I can't even imagine tasting Opah, however Tom Cruise seems quite excited about the prospect...
On the other hand I loves me some Opa!
Opah is delicious.
Last season on a long range trip out of San Diego, someone caught a 50lber. It was really annoying because he fought the fish for 30 min while the school of giant blue fin we were chasing kept on moving.
Opah has 3 different kinds of meat. The belly meat looks like it came from a cow and not a fish.
I wondered if it was tasty. Now I know.
I don't get it...people have been eating this fish for awhile but just now realized it's warm-blooded?
Pretty cool story either way.
I misread that and honestly thought they called that fish the "Oprah"...
The fish is rather rotund.
/Is Oprah still fat?
I don't think so.
Cartiligenous.
I've seen Oprah in her underwear.
Michael Phelps?
I will add to the chorus saying opah is delicious. Other than that, I have no real opinion on the discovery.
I always assumed MGoFIsh was warm blooded.
I guess I was wrong.

Little in an abstract sense I guess.
It's a cool discovery; we have a family friend who studies large fish like tuna at Woods Hole. You forget how big these things can get.
Opaaaaa!! ver. 2
