OT: Favourite Mgo... post

Submitted by fergusg on May 13th, 2021 at 9:26 AM

Wanted to change the topic and ask folks for their favourite all time mgo post (blog, board, diary).

Think it’s been a while since we celebrated the best contributions to this blog over the years.

My suggestion isn’t new nor unique (its mgoblog hall of fame after all) but CREX’s series about his Korean GF/Wife clearly stands out.  I estimate Lil Sis is 27 now.  Would love an update...

What you  got?

(and bronxblue I like your diaries so much I first searched your Nic to track this down thinking it was you...obviously not...but quality of writing the same).

Can't find the exact post, but it was when WD just went on this crazy apologetic rant about Michigan and how you really aren't a fan unless you blindly give your entire person to the program.  Then he posted really ugly Nike gear.  Wait....I think that was every post WD ever made.

The first reply to this post always stuck out to me, though it was partially lost with the site changes.

Seems to me that the rate of random high-quality posts and jokes has gone down over time. It's likely a combination of maturity of the board and internet culture in general, becoming more mean, angry, and cynical in general, and this board itself not allowing as much fun since we're in BPONE over the football team year-round. I wish we could go back to that, but that's like wishing we could all be in college again. It's not happening.

The LLoyd Brady - historical thread.  Still my all-time favorite.  I see some of the pictures are no longer there, but it was fabulous back in 2010 when created.

I miss CRex's content - just great stuff.  ST3 also used to put out box score reviews after games that were always interesting, and the BiSB Opponent Watch articles are always fun and Steel was a fantastic read.  And when any one on the staff just gets ahold of a topic and digs into it they tend to produce great work.

Thanks for the compliment and I'm glad you enjoy them.  Honestly, I think the stuff I write has a shelf life of about a month before I just start to cringe re-reading it.  Like, there were some B&W stuff I wrote during the later Hoke years where I assume my hair smelled like a sewer because my head was so far up my own ass.

This piece is kind of brutal to recall because it was published at 1am on the night/morning before football Armageddon, 2006 (with the OSU and UM #1 and #2 in the country).  Was that the last night of my life where Michigan Football was pure and good and strong and beautiful and hopeful?  Yes.  Yes it was.

I remember reading this when I woke up in the morning and thinking, "Brian Cook is the only human being on earth that gets me."  Also, it features a really good song by Sufjan Stevens.

How about my all time worst post that still comes up on a daily basis that includes "BPONE".

for whatever reason, one of my favorites is this random column after a rutgers game in a season whose ending we had no way of anticipating at the time.

I think it's just the peak of what I come to this site for–the great writing that's put out quickly after events that seem very important to us at the time, even though they become obsolete within days.

It's really hard to get everyone pulling in one direction. Everyone reading this knows that in their bones. In Juwan Howard it seems like Michigan's found a guy who can pull up the guys who need it, leave the guys who don't alone, and gather everyone to him, past, present, and future.

it made me feel even more lucky that we'd hired Juwan, and it's the final word on how perfect he is for michigan at exactly this point in time, with 30+ years of context coming together.

Pretty much anything by MeanJoe has me laughing my ass off.

Where he (assuming) comes up with some of his rants is beyond me... and underneath all the "I did stuff to RGard's mom that you wouldn't do to a barnyard animal", dude is pretty smart.

Every now and again he'll throw out something so poignant, you're like, where did that come from?  Kinda like when you see someone drop dead gorgeous with someone really goofy.

Are tshirt sales in Ohio still going strong?

I can relate to the parents showing up at the house routine.  My girlfriend and I had to hide that for two years from her parents.  Pretty stupid in retrospect.

Probably not a board favorite, but one of the most acutely hilarious threads in the last several years was the one where someone requested shirtless / workout photos of a couple basketball players, and instead got about 200 creeper memes. Better still, that person was genuinely PISSED at the nature of the replies. I don't know that I've seen them post much since quite honestly.

The first time WD custom designed his name into an avatar specially for mgoblog . Someone responded with “wait, you created your own avatar.”
