OT: "El Camino: A Breaking Bad Story" dropped today

Submitted by 608Monroe on October 11th, 2019 at 11:17 AM

Watched this the moment it dropped fearing the worst.  Every single damned time a studio tries to add to a work of art, like Breaking Bad, all they do is F it up and make me wish I never heard of the follow-up. (E.g.  "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues")

In this case, however, I'm happy to say -- IMHO Vince Gilligan is a freaking genius.  And Aaron Paul is incredible.  And this franchise should live on forever if they can continue to tap the same talent and writing.

Curious of what others are saying...

It's fantastic. The storyline of (relatively) nice guy Jimmy McGill is such a different show from Breaking Bad that it actually helps to build suspense as you watch him slowly turn into dirtbag Saul Goodman. On the other hand, if you loved BB, the Mike Ehrmantraut storyline feels like you're right back in it again.

I had no clue until I read it on the edge of the internet this morning. Very pleasant surprise. The one review before yours that I read was very positive as well. Aaron Paul seems to not be a great actor, except when he plays Pinkman.

Thanks for the tip. Had no idea this was coming.

For that matter since we're on the subject I'll mention a couple of my recent favorites:

Mindhunters (2 seasons, Netflix)--About the early days ('60s/'70s era) of the FBI behavioral science unit and its method for profiling and catching serial killers. No blood or gore or violence. Just a great procedural mystery drama with excellent characters and writing.

Goliath (3 seasons, Amazon)--Billy Bob Thornton as a brilliant but fallen alcoholic lawyer who falls upon a huge case against a giant defense contractor that is represented by his former law firm. Billy Bob is intense and hilarious at the same time and William Hurt plays one creepy evil motherf*&!er. Still on first season but I see that Dennis Quaid is coming on for season 3.

A few of my recent favorites:

Chernobyl. I'm not sure what is supposed to scare us more. The fact of nuclear power or the mendacity of the government regulators.

Deadwood The Movie. Maybe not everything I had hoped for but an excellent send off for TV's greatest show. And now David Milch has been lost to dementia. Who else could set Shakespeare in an 1876 Dakota mining camp? Not one motherfucking cocksucker besides Milch.

Sneaky Pete. No deep themes. Just a real fun watch. And I've always been a fan of Giovanni Ribisi.

Aside and OT to this OT. Just finished listening to season 2 of the Podcast Crimetown. About Detroit from the rise of Coleman Young to the fall of Kwame Kilpatrick. Kind of a trip down memory lane.

Mindhunter season 1 does not have blood or gore, but I don't know that it's not violent.  It has very explicit discussions of violence -- and you have to listen to deranged wackadoodles taking pleasure in reliving the unspeakably violent acts that they did to people.  I thought it was great (I'm in the criminal justice field), but it is not for the faint of heart.

I'm a huge Breaking Bad fan, but I'm kinda nervous about the movie.  Hopefully it is good but either way I don't think it will take anything away from the show.  For what it's worth the reviews I've seen are mixed.

Excellent. My wife, 5 year old son, and one of the three year old twin girls are going on some sort of charity walk. This leaves me with the other three year old twin. Looks like we now have plans. I assume this is child friendly. She likes breaking things and has a naughty streak.

An alright story, but didn't think it really added anything.  I think Breaking Bad was perfect all the way though so the bar was set impossibly high.  Watching through Breaking Bad again the the future I wouldn't watch this again to include it in the story.
