OT: Don’t joke with Jalen Rose about the Kobe game

Submitted by taistreetsmyhero on
My friend is a basketball coach at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Yesterday, Jalen came to visit the varsity team at practice, and one of the kids had the bright idea of bringing up the 81-point Kobe game. Apparently Jalen was not amused. I’ll let you guess how many suicides the whole team had to run...Respect your elders!

I think my knees just crapped out merely thinking of 81 suicides. Good thing I was sitting down when I read this, I guess, because I won't be getting up for a while, it seems.

Of course, my knees are terrified of mogul skiing and I've only done smaller hills and cross-country in my life to date.

Jalen gets a lot of shit for that game, but the Raptors were in a 1-2-2 zone that night and Kobe essentially scored against the team.  Jalen might have been on him for 16 of those points.

I happened to be listening to this on the radio, from back when I lived in the LA area. I picked it up late in the third and of course Kobe was going off.

What I had forgotten is that Kobe built a big chunk of his huge point total while the game was still in question. It was only in the fourth that the Lakers pulled away, and by that point, might as well let Kobe go for it. But he was already at a ridiculously high total when he was actually carrying the team.

I'm not a Kobe fan but he could be fun to watch/follow back then.

But he was so, so good. Always took bad shots. Always felt like they were going in when he took those bad shots.

That mid-range game of his is basically extinct now, with the exception of perhaps DeRozan. I doubt we'll think of DeRozan in the same breath as Kobe when all is said and done - Kobe had a certain mystique about him - yet DeRozan's style is fun to watch.

I have always respected Jalen Rose.  He is a competitor, but he is also intelligent and a great communicator.  He has a fan favorite in Indy for many years.  It does not surprise me that he is being a positive influence for adults and children through his leadership academy.  I am sure he was a bit incredulous and was not phony about his bad memories from that game.  That kid was a fool!

Jalen talks about this game all the time.

Jalen has been a great representative of the University.  His work with JLRA is fantastic.  This is just something that happened on his watch.

That's kinda funny. I used to watch SportsNation quite often, and Michelle Beadle would almost always bring that game up to Rose. She also would bring it up when she worked on NBA the Jump...Rose seemed to be pretty lighthearted about it and always seemed to laugh about it (and own it). But, I suppose he doesn't want some high school kid to rub it in his face!

JRLA is a great thing. Kudos to Jalen. Used to be in a student org that would tutor kids there for the ACT. Some schools pushed against it, but JRLA was happy for any help. Great kids.

Kobe had a home game against an excellent Dallas team (made the Finals that year, lost to MiamI) where he had 62 points - while not playing the entire 4th quarter (because the Lakers were up so much).

He was a scoring machine in that 2006 season - the 81 points vs. Toronto was the high but arguably not THAT much of an outlier.

Unfortunately, Kobe's equally remembered for 2006 for appearing to quit (3 shots and 1 point, seemingly refusing to shoot) in the 2nd half of their Game 7 1st Round game against Phoenix.
