OT: Do you have a "second" college football or basketball team?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Outside of "whoever is playing OSU" or "whoever is playing MSU" or "whoever is playing ND"...do you have a second team in college football and men's basketball? If so, who?

Live in CT.  Went to UM, daughter went to UM, son is at UConn now.  We all went to both football games so there was some minor tension.  Guy sitting next to me at the game here had the exact same situation so it was all fun.

Headed there after Ann Arbor for wife's grad school. Went to some bball and football games. Kind of took a shine to them. I watch and root for them when I'm not busy rooting for Michigan.

GO BLUE!!!

I was a Cal undergrad, and am on the UM faculty. If they ever play, in anything, I am honor-bound to root for Cal per the Rules of College Football Fandom, as I have not taken advantage of the Faculty Exception.

So, I guess that technically makes Michigan my second team. But, I follow Michigan more closely than Cal, just due to longevity (I joined the faculty in '98) and geography.

Thanks to family members, friends and partners who attended or played sports for the schools.

Football: USC, Syracuse, Duke and Princeton
Basketball: Syracuse, Duke, Boston University and Princeton
Soccer: Syracuse, Duke, Boston University and Princeton
Lacrosse: Syracuse, Duke, Boston University and Princeton
Hockey: Boston University and Princeton
Track and Field: LSU, Syracuse, Duke, Boston University and Princeton
Baseball: USC, Duke and Emory

I'll root for Army, Navy and Air Force when they're not playing against each other, or against Michigan or any of those listed schools.

UVA for football (currently atrocious but good tradition) and bball (Tony Bennett!). I went there for undergrad and Michigan for three years of grad school. If these two ever met in a meaningful football game I'm not sure what I'd do.

BGSU is my second team. Really only for football and hockey. I am an alumni and lived there throughout the year while in school. The city is actually pretty nice. A real diverse blend of old town feel and new town feel. Some pretty good bars, of course there are a few terrible ones as well.

Grand Valley State (where I was an undergraduate) The miscellaneous southern school that pays me to work in their athletic department. Gonzaga Basketball (I was eight years old when they made that elite 8 run) Hawaii athletics (I just like Hawaii)

For football, I would probably say Oregon based on their fun, uptempo style of play.

For basketball, I find myself routing for Wichita State whenever I'm watching a game they're involved in.

At the end of the day though, I honestly don't care about any teams other than Michigan football and Michigan basketball.

A few of my buddies moved to Boulder way back when.  I visited them a few times and had a great time out there and decided to adopt the Buffaloes as my second team.  However, I decided to drop that temporary allegiance the evening of 9/24/94.  As for now, maybe Wayne State.

Texas would be my second team as I went to law school there and it's the wife's team. Also Maryland because I grew up there but it's going to be hard rooting for them now that they are in our conference. I root for a little school called Mount St. Mary's in bball because I grew up near there and would go to games as a kid. And to round it out anyone that plays Duke.

Arizona State. Lived there for a little while and always liked their uniforms and location. Strange reasons, sure, but I like em. Go Blue forever though! Nobody is a close second.

Actually, I'm a big Coach K admirer. True, Duke seems to get more than its share of favorable ref calls, but that appears to be true of most traditional powerhouse programs. Can't blame Coach K for that. Plus he does an admirable job with our Olympic team of pampered prima donnas. I think it says a lot about the man that he garners the respect of the Olympic teams.

I used to like going to Akron U games since I grew up going to them. But ever since they built the giant money pit and started charging much higher for tickets I never go. My mom was working for them and they spent a fortune on season tickets every year. Seriously $2000 for Akron U??!? but now that this new president is running the University into the ground she bailed and retired and they told them to go f themselves on the tickets. Not sure I'll even follow them anymore.

Minnesota. GO GOPHS!

I started liking them when they sucked, to "reverse bandwagon", so to speak. And now look, my investment paid off. Im a part-time fan of an above average team.

Cal. It's where my parents met. Still remember that somber conversation I had with my parents when I decided to stay in Ann Arbor for college rather than fulfill my lifelong dream of going to Cal. Looking back, in almost every way it was the right choice. Only problem is now I want to move to California for residency and it would be a whole lot easier had I gone to med school there (which woulda been easier had I gone to Cal.)

I see them as a peer institution (not a peer athletic department, mind you) in a comparable league. The bears are also usually underdogs, so I am psyched to root for them against perennial bullies USC, as well as random other teams that I don't like including Oregon, UCLA, Zona and Stanford.

The upshot is that I have been weirdly conflicted about the Jaylen Brown situation. Commiting to CalI means I will actually get to watch him play in person this year, but obviously this still sucks and pisses me off.

My family has adopted UMD football as our D-2 alternative. They've been good every year we've been here and the games are fun to watch; hard to find games to attend that don't conflict with Michigan games, though.

I am kinda sorta sympathetic to them in hockey, too, and I've gone to games. Harder to really like them after St. Paul a couple of years ago, though. That stung more than I thought it would.

basketball....no. football....not really. I do try to watch Arizona's games because I love watching the offense but I don't much care if they win or lose.

I liked Boise St. for personal, comic reasons when they were atrocious so I liked when they became a power.....for a while. Now? Kinda don't like them as the charm has worn off. I think the blue field is no longer "so crazy it's neat" and should be banned (same for all colored fields). Just not into them anymore even in a joking way unless it helps UM somehow. I have a soft spot for much of the MAC teams based in Michigan and Ohio - not to the point of caring at all but when they would play a "power program" tough I enjoy it. Though, I'm a BG over Toledo guy. I'd exclude Toledo as I don't hate them but other than having a few friends play for them over the years, a few players I liked, etc, I'm not into them. Liking BG and losing to them under RR didn't help. I actually respected msu as a kid until the "EL Longest Second" game! I didn't hate them and liked when they won when not playing Michigan! I never rooted for them or cared when they lost but outside of UM games I preferred if they'd win in both football & basketball. After that game (I was a late teen at the time and easily 15 yrs into HARDCORE UM fandom, btw!) I issued a fan and moral fatwa against msu. I went from not liking but not hating them to boiling rage. The revenge beating we have them the next year was beautiful. I respected psu for longer than I should have. I didn't like them or care but I felt like they "did things right".....yeah. I started disliking them a bit before we found out they were the worst kind of humans but after that I now downright hate them. They're about even with ND for me, tbh. There fans are either insane, osu level maniacs or completely cool so it's tough but I can't not hate a program that didn't give themselves a couple year death penalty when that broke. How could I like a collective fan base that had a riot in favor of Paterno, etc? I now have zero respect for them and I know it's not the player's fault but they have to be innocent bystanders in my hatred of psu. Not a fan and invest zero concern but always had a soft spot for Syracuse and VTech. BASKETBALL? Gonzaga the same as Boise in football. Liked them when the scrappy underdog but now a perennial power I am indifferent. Georgetown, maybe? I had a Starter jacket as a kid so....lol.

I agree with the soft spots som of you have mentioned for UVA or SDSU basketball because I have those sympathies as well.  My 2nd favorites would be the East Carolina Pirates for football as I went to high school in the area and had a coouple of classes there.  In basketball it would be the Terps of Maryland due to being a huge Walt Williams fan as a teen and having a high schooler John Gilchrist(the PG who followed up Steve Blake) as an employee during my time managing an screenprinting shop.

PS  To those of you thought this was a bad question you have to remember not all of us are fortunate enough to be from the state(which I am) or go to the world greatest university(which I did not).

With pops coming from Long Beach and attending UCLA, I grew up with the Bruins as my favorite pro football team, until I learned that they were actually a college team.

I used to always root for msu, but not ever again. I figured they were mostly kids from Michigan so what the hell? Now I have had a good sample of how the sparty fans are and I will always root for whoever is playing them, unless it's osu. I thought spartys were bad losers , but they are even worse winners!

This won't be popular but...I root for the University of Utah, my alma mater. I'm a Utah football season ticket holder (I will be there on September 3rd!) and Salt Lake County resident. I will have mixed feelings when the Utes and Wolverines play, quite honestly. I hope it is a close game and each team shows some promise for the season.

By the way, I really enjoyed going to Ann Arbor last year for the Utah-Michigan game. Ann Arbor is a great college town, the Big House is awesome, and the Michigan band is the best in the country! Too bad the Wolverines had such a down year.

I also did some graduate work at Pepperdine University, so I root for the Waves in basketball (and the Utes...and the Wolverines).

Go Utes and Go Blue!!
