OT: Dave Grohl's Sound City Documentary Airing at 5pm Eastern on Palladia

Submitted by HelloHeisman91 on

I know there are a lot of music fans on the board and I thought some might like to check this out.  I believe this doc came out last year and this is the first chance I have found to watch it.  It's airning on Palladia today at 5pm, Comcast 209, and I am excited to check it out.  I am going to try to embed it but will also provide a link to the trailer.

and it was awesome.  Dave Grohl just seems like a good, down to earth dude.

Side note, when I lived in LA, I'm pretty sure I saw the drummer (can't remember his name) eating at a Baja Fresh in Calabasas, CA.  He was just eating by himself, grabbing a quick bite.  I'm 99.9% sure it was him.  Anyway, they seem like good guys...and I like a lot of their music.

That's the show where Page came out and they played Zeppelin's Rock n Roll - right?  If so, that was AMAZING to say the least.  I've seen FF in concert once, and if you haven't seen them before, you really owe to yourself see them.  They played two sets for a total about 3hrs 30mins.  They give you their heart and soul everytime they perform.

I love DG and the rest of the Foos...and it helps that they are big fans of Rush (one of my all-time favorite bands). They even showed up at a Rush gig recently and played 'YYZ' with the boys, as well as give one of the most kick-ass Rock Hall induction speeches you'll ever see.

...neighborhood...my wife is friends with his wife from high school...one of his daughters is in class with my niece...so I see him quite often. So it is funny that he is one of the biggest rockers around...but when I see him it is usually at the super market (yes DG goes shopping at the super market with his kids), getting frozen yogurt or at toddler birthday parties.

This is an interesting and much needed documentary.  I have a home recording studio with a 1987 MCI JH24 24 track analog tape recorder which everything is recorded on before it gets transfered to the computer.

"Sound City" does a pretty good job addressing the lost art of analog recording, and how it affects both the quality of the sound as well as the type of music that is being put out today on pop radio.  Grohl released a record in companion with this docu, which was well publicized as being recorded on analog tape in his home studio.  He even went as far as cut up the tape and put a tiny piece of it in each CD sold.  Unfortunately his album came out sqwashed and harsh sounding, however that most likely happened in the mixing and digital mastering stage.

Studios like Sound City will still be out there, but all analog is an increasingly difficult thing to manage to do.  Good techs for old tape recorders and mixers are harder to find, and the good ones are very expensive per hour.  That said, Im on my way to the hardware store in a few minutes to try to find some parts for the power supply on my machine which went out this week.

"Muscle Shoals" is another recent music documentary that is on my list of viewing.  Gonna check out Sound City again tonight.  If you guys like this stuff also check out "Still Bill" which is over on Netflix.  Rock On.

I thought the documentary was mediocre, although I already knew the details of the whole "recording studio industry goes digital" thing, which is the focus of the film.

If you want to see a great recent documentary, check out Jiro Dreams of Sushi.  Or, better yet, watch one of the greatest documentaries of all time, Hoop Dreams.

What happens when we subtract out the human element to art?  Most think of technology (in sound studios) as complementing the art of music. It does. But it can deprecate it too.  I guess I'm showing my age with this comment.  All I can say is I'm grateful for rock and roll bands that play electric guitars and real drum sets at live shows. They should be commended.  In my view the artificial sound tracks, overmixing and the lip synchers are a conspiratorial sham.

Thanks for posting it. Best song by the Foo Fighters is still Learning to Fly.

Sound City is a pretty interesting movie. The reason I love Dave Grohl is that he is a rock and roll purist. People should make music, not computers. I'll never understand why people will pay money to watch someone push buttons on a computer.

As they say it the movie, it's cool to see the artists that influenced the artists you like, who were not over produced, to feel where their genuine music comes from.
