OT - A couple of Michigan centric 'Not The Bee' articles you may enjoy
Not The Bee has a good number of ‘feel good’ articles and I found these two Michigan related write-ups to be enjoyable.
Ferris State: https://notthebee.com/article/this-ferris-state-grad-walked-the-stage-at-graduation-with-her-10-day-old-daughter-in-her-gown
This 24-year-old momma had planned to walk the stage at graduation in Big Rapids, Michigan. with a big ol' belly in front of her, but it turned out little Annibelle wanted out early so she too could experience graduation.
Wolverine: https://notthebee.com/article/bet-you-never-knew-wolverines-could-run-that-fast-did-you
This one is covers a Wolverine sprinting in the snow in Wyoming. The video was taken from a distance (duh!) but you can see the Wolverine break through a gaping hole in the OSU defense and run for the TD. Per the article, wolverines can run up to 30 mph! Luckily the video was taken as the wolverine ran in the other direction!
Side bar: I just finish vacuuming the first floor for my father-of-the-year duties*.

* I adopted a Maine Coon a couple of years ago and periodically vacuuming up all the hair was part of my duties! Solomon is 2+ years old now and smarter than many dogs I’ve met.

You have a pet raccoon?
December 23rd, 2023 at 6:37 PM ^
Had — back when I was in high school we found a very young raccoon, captured it, and took care of it, After the biting and scratching ended (we wore big leather gloves), ‘Ricky’ became quite friendly and playful.

Ok I’m no big fan of cats but Maine coons are cool.

My wife love cats. I’m ambivalent at best and firmly believe in the usefulness of having a dog around.
told my wife the only way we’re getting a cat is if I can get a Maine coon. Vociferous, intelligent, curious, and loving. And massive.

We have a lazy orange house cat that has mis-remembered how to use the litter box, He’s now banned to the basement, so I taught Solomon how to ring the “dog bell” hanging from the basement doorknob so can get to the litter box downstairs. Didn’t take long - he is pretty intelligent.

I’ve had a couple of cats that did that (more than just once and with clean litter boxes) and they were evicted. They were given to some friends that had “barn cats”. No way I could live with that.

Cats are extremely useful, they make sure you have no pests!

I used to have a smart cat. Makes them that much more mischievous. Now we’ve got two dogs. Dumb as rocks, but happy as hell all the time.

LOL, I rescued a Maine Coon 2-3 years ago. Totally agree!

Since we're sharing, here's a photo of my great uncle Bob, front row, center. He was the captain of the University of Chicago baseball team, 1927/28. Back row, center, is the coach, none other than Fritz Crisler.

This is totally bad ass

Wow, thanks for sharing Wendy!!
Their gloves remind me of the one my Grandpa had when I was a Little League player. He loved to play catch with me and tell me stories of him and his brother going to Detroit to watch Ty Cobb play.
Great memories 🤗

That is so cool! I‘m sure that photo is prominently displayed in your household.

I had no idea! I was searching my family on Ancestry and found all these photos. He died when I was in college, and had lived in another state for a while so I just didn't know his history. I knew he went to U of Chicago, along with my grandfather, but that was it. He also played basketball there, and Crisler may also have been the bball coach.

That’s awesome. We went on Ancestry and found out my grandfather had a complete other family (wife and a couple kids) in the old country before he left them for America, where he married my grandmother and had 5 kids. It caused some holiday drama a few years ago when we found out.

[EDIT: oops]

I know of a couple people who found out they had half siblings. Surprise.

Wendy,
Your great uncle and my grandfather both played/worked with Crisler as athletes. Crazy connection.

Yours at Michigan?

Wow! I'm totally impressed.

It's not quite as on-topic but considering you live in one of Chicago's northern suburbs, it's on-topic-ish for you: I found out one of my relatives was a sports hero at Highland Park, and now their sports complex is named for him, Wolters.

Standard commencement speech — "Commencement' means a beginning"—feels especially appropriate here.

WTF is "not the bee"?
December 23rd, 2023 at 7:08 PM ^
It’s the sister publication of The Babylon Bee (https://babylonbee.com/) which, when you click through, will find articles that are not true, but tend to be funny and/or make fun of prominent people. Sadly, a good number of their fake news stories have later come true.
