OT: Best spontaneous thing you've ever done?

Submitted by sheepdog on

Just for fun -

What is the best spontaneous thing you've ever done?

Mine - during my junior year in college, a few of us friends were sitting around one Wednesday night board and decided on taking a spontaneous road trip to NYC (from Alabama).  We left less than 24 hours later and had an epic road trip, one that we STILL talk about today - 12 years later.

So, what are some of the best spontaneous trips, events, surprises, etc. you have ever been a part of?

costs.  thanks guys.

the story about it is that we had borrowed a buddy's old sunfish/sailfish and were out in the channel when we got becalmed - a rare thing that far north.  no wind, no waves, hot, muggy, the hottest UP summer i ever remember.   well here comes the fitz bearing down on us in the channel and hammering his horn as is proper.   we paddled our little rear ends as fast as we could to get clear of the channel, but couldn't resist the parting shot.

Summer right after graduating college (UVA) I was jobless (okay I was working at Chili's) and a buddy and I noticed that Dispatch was playing in Boston that Friday night prior to a home Red Sox game on Saturday afternoon versus the Diamondbacks. The pitching match up happened to Curt Schilling vs Pedro Martinez.  We got in the car late around 2am Friday morning after our Chili's shift and some drinking at bars naturally. We drove all night to Boston and scalped tickets to both Dispatch and the Sox game. Dispatch killed it at Fleetboston pavillion. Next day we sat in Fenways outfield bleachers in perfect sunny weather and were treated to an epic pitchers duel. We may have slept in the car both nights. We still refer to it as Greatest Weekend Ever 1.0.

From a Michigan perspective, I had 2 tickets to the '97 "Judgement Day" game against Penn State, but my wife (girlfriend at the time) got sick and could not go.

It was a cold rainy November day, we were supposed to lose big, and Penn State was 3+ hours away.  I was going to bag it and watch it on TV in the warm living room.

But then I said, "Fuck it, I'm going alone."

It was the best I've ever seen Michigan play live.  We looked like a pro team.

That game and the Cap One Bowl game against Florida/Tebow/Meyer (Lloyd's last game) were the only times I have ever been in awe of my own team.

What abou the Nebraska game at home a few years ago? Denard and Co. were firing on all cyclinders and I certainly was in awe. Then again, I never saw the great teams of Michigan's past so I don't know how good that performance was compared to our performances back when we were good.

Summer after college graduation a friend and I were drinking heavily in NYC - drove him to the airport, which was NOT a good idea, and he convinced me to fly down to DC with him to visit his sister. Whole weekend was one drunken blur...

In high school, my friends and I went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. Our waiter was about as nerdy as you can get - totally awkward, giggled uncontrollably, and I'm sure serving high school girls wasn't helping. His English wasn't the best, either. So when we were done, and he asked if we wanted to take home the leftovers, I said yes, and then scraped the fried rice into my purse, which TOTALLY FREAKED HIM OUT. He started shrieking, and said, "No! No! We have containers for that!" It was just a spur-of-the-moment type thing, but boy did it wreak hilarious havoc.

but I was in a foster home (and perfectly happy) when the opportunity to go up for adoption came up. I was 15, so the odds were pretty low, but I just said, "Let's do this". Was adopted.

Second best choice was randomly picking my college. I really wanted to go to Michigan, but I was told I couldn't get in because I hadn't taken a language in high school (being so smart at that age). I still don't know if that was true, but I randomly remembered a college that a family friend had attended. 9 years later, I am married to my college girlfriend and with a bouncing baby boy.

Just starting driving for spring break one year. Decided we wanted to go to Florida hours before we left and booked a hotel during the long drive down. Got down there and decided the hotel was crap for the price and checked into a motel across the street for a quarter of the price. I don't remember the rest of the trip.

In one weekend. I was sent to Harrisburg to train for my new job in 1998. I decided to take my rental car east by myself. I stopped at Yankee Stadium on Saturday and scalped a ticket from some 13 year old kid who appeared to be the head of a young teen crime syndicate. It was an afternoon start, and the game was done at about 7pm.

I was trying to figure where to go next (the Phillies, Orioles and .Red Sox were all at home as I remember). I decided on the Blue Jays-Red Sox game at Fenway. I slept at a rest stop, got to Fenway at 11am and bought a single box seat ticket. I talked to Derek Lowe for about 15 minutes before the game by shouting "Edsel Ford sucks" (his high school) and how he hit me with a pitch playing varsity ball.  The game went 13 innings; I stayed for the entire thing and I had no idea exactly how far I was away from Harrisburg. I had an exam at 8:00am and didn't get back to the hotel until almost 3am. I must have done ok because 17 years later I'm still working for the same company.

Great adventure and I got to see two classic ballparks in one weekend.

When I was in my first year of grad school (about 18 years ago, dear lord), we were having one of those stupid department mixers, where everyone stands around and drinks wine and tries to look sophisticated. When I walk in, I see three people standing together from my PhD class. One was a priest named father Bill, and the other two were a guy from France and a guy from central Africa. So I walk up to them and say, "A priest, a Frenchman and an African walk into a bar..." The joke could have led to my immediate dismissal from grad school, I'm sure, but all three started laughing uncontrollably. I was saved. One of my proudest moments.... :-)

Late 70's, high school string quartet: Invited as guinea pigs to a Master Class with the Guarneri String Quartet in East Lansing. We borrowed the viola player's Dad's Mercedes sports car and tootled up to E Lansing to do the gig. Turned out it was MSU's homecoming and the dorms and frats were festooned with banners made out of bedsheets weighted down with beer cans.

We were dressed in suits, but as we passed more and more of these my buddies looked at each other and said "That one must come down". So I shinnied up a drainpipe to the second floor, snagged a "Go Spartans" banner and ran to the Mercedes just as the guys started running out of the building after us.

Man, that felt good. Cool story, me.

Was working at Palio the summer that the MLB All-Star Game was in Detroit and a buddy came up with an extra ticket to the derby about 2 hours before my shift was supposed to start.  I liked my job but going to the Derby was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  I went in and told my manager that I was very sorry, that I understood if he wanted to fire me and that I was okay with him firing me, but I hoped that he wouldn't because IT'S THE DERBY and I didn't really have a choice.

End of story, I went, saw Bobby Abreu set the then-record for HRs hit in a round and caught a David Ortiz-hit ball.  I also did not get fired (but worked double-shifts the next two weekends, which helped pay for the ticket).

Most spontaneous M-related thing was parlaying a hot night at the blackjack table into a next-day flight to Dallas, weekend hotel and ticket to the M-Alabama game in 2012.  It was awesome unitl Alabama got the ball the second time...

In college at WMU, we were bored on a Saturday with some friends from high school, and decided to drive up to Minneapolis and see Batch's first NFL start with the Lions. We rolled into Minny at 5am, drove to the top of the UM parking ramp and slept for 2 or 3 hours, then drove down to the game. Got good tix at reasonable price, saw Batch get thrown around like a ragdoll and the Lions get killed, and drove home.

Then the radiator blew literally a half mile from home. That is luck.

at an after-wedding party of my best friend at a local hotel and tried to hook up with his cousin.  I encouraged her to come back to my room.  She flat out told me no, and when I tried to convice her to stay, she said I was confusing her with some other girl.  We went our first date soon thereafter and have been dating ever since.

Took a flight on a B-17 at an airshow around here years ago. Drained my bank account at the time but was totally worth it. I disappeared from my family for a while and came back and told them to hold my stuff I'd be back in 45 minutes. I think it was the Yankee Lady also! I was maybe 19 at the time.

Post-college backpacking trip. Bought a flight into Paris and a flight out of Athens with a month in between and nothing else booked. Came back engaged after proposing on the fly with no ring. Still married 14 years later.
