OT anyone still following tigers?

Submitted by Rodriguesqe on

9 outs, 8 strikeouts so far. its 2 nothing but tigers could have been down many more.

This team once again is teatering on collapse and with 3 in Cleveland next week I don't think its unthinkable Ausmus is down to his final 3 series. The deadline is in 6 weeks. I don't think the boss will allow for a fire sale but something akin to last year might be possible, though there are less obvious names to move.

Post something similar.  This team is good enough to compete for a playoff spot.  Ausmus is absolutely the issue here.  He is bad at baseball strategy, terrible with bullpen management, and has not done well in the locker room.  The problem is that at the moment, any replacement options for this year would be equally as bad.

bad at baseball strategy? possibly.

bullpen management? what is he supposed to do? he doesn't have anyone but an aging star closer to go to. bullpen is on avila

not done well in the locker room? the players love him. any whiff of his job in danger brings out guys like vmart and kinsler defending him on their own free will.

you have no clue what you are talking about.  Kinsler and Vmart have never defended him personally.  Comments like "it's not the manager's fault" and "our manager is doing a great job" is what veteran players and true professionals say.  You're also wrong about the bullpen.  It's not all about the roster.  Different guys have pitched very well out of that pen at different times.  His love affair with the Wilson's and his obsession with rightie/leftie over actual performance is why the pen looks so inept.

Leyland wouldn't replace Ausmus and I don't think there's much desire for Gardenhire.  I know people didn't like Tom Brookens at third base some times, but I wonder if he would've been a better choice if they could replay the hiring a few years ago.  He did manage Erie for some time with success.  And he loved the franchise.

Leyland is 71 now and he isn't coming back. Gardenhire is no better. His style is stuck in the 1980's and he's never won when the chips are down, either. He's one of the "I DON'T NEED THAT DADBURNED SABR STUFF!! GRANDPA DICKIEBOO PLAYED THIS WAY 40 YEARS AGO AND THAT'S HOW I'M GONNA DO IT TOO!! IT'S STILL 1956 AND I WANNA VOTE FOR EISENHOWER!!" types. That's the reason Gardenhire wasn't hired last fall.

I'll throw two names out there to mull over: Manny Acta. Jim Tracy.

He's not jumping ship midseason.  I was responding to what was available now.

Also, I thought Ausmus was going to be better than Leyland/Gardenhire on the sabermetrics front, but I haven't seen it.  Someone has to show me the numbers that say we should have a lineup with both Aviles and Romine in it.  I've seen that combo too many times.  I don't think we should have a roster with both of those guys on it.

But after the season, I hope Avila makes a play for Acta.  The Nationals never should've fired him.  He had a dumpster fire of a roster to manage.

After the Wild Card loss to Baltimore, I heard that there was open complaining about him.  While injuries and a poorly constructed bullpen are not his fault, he has made enough coaching blunders to cost this team or nearly cost this team a handful of wins.

I truly believe the last reason he's back is due to him in the locker room.

I think we often forget that a baseball manager and a football coach, are two very very different things. What it comes down to for the Tigers is that they need better starting pitching. Quite frankly that has nothing to do with ausmus. I sometimes question some of his baseball strategy and what not, but there comes a point where we have to stop blaming him for failure.
