NYT March Madness Graphic...with faux Michigan mascot...

Submitted by TESOE on

Spot the UofM mascot?  If we can't choose to not have one...we might as well choose our own.

For some reason they don't like this one...

Every other school depicted is official and easily recognizable. Not sure if I miss that. Thought this was worth a post. March Madness ... soon.

Instead of a wolverine like Willie; we do an actual brown wolverine like the actual animal. Nothing like Willie which I think is awful.

Willie looks like something you would see at a carnival with the neon blue color.

And only a couple:

The University of Michigan Athletic Department reports that Biff and Bennie “grew larger and more ferocious,” leading Yost to conclude, "It was obvious that the Michigan mascots had designs on the Michigan men toting them, and those designs were by no means friendly."

those are actually the famous umbrellas on the river walk at the incredible Casa Rio restaurant. Some of the best TexMex out there (the last place you'll find a pizza.) I'm not a drinker but they are also well known for their margaritas. They were the first San Antoinio business to open their doors to the river.

I know I'm in the small minority here but I would enjoy a mascot if they could make it look similar to a real wolverine.  My young kids would enjoy it when we make the 4hr trip to A2.  It wouldn't have to be as prevelant as Brutus or others.  Keep him off the court/field and in the concourses at the televised events.  It would be good for nonrevenue sports that draw kids like softball, lacrosse, etc and for events at Mott and with kids club.

I would change my avatar were I not so scarred by the incompetence of a certain officiating crew in the day.

This is clearly the best reason to adopt a mascot of our own making.  The designer of this POS does not care a bit about our school and or has clear enmity in his/her mind or ... dare I say something up their buttocks.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

A sickly wolverine with an obvious broken arm looking like he's either jerking off or trying to stop from peeing himself.

If that isnt something we can all get behind I dont know what to tell you.

I was going to say that a badger is a somewhat similar looking animal and Wisconsin doesn't do a bad job with theirs,  but after looking it up, I'll pass.

Wolverine is top left.  Badger is top right.

15 mascots, 14 of them among the top 16 seeds.

No Arizona (too many Wildcats?)

No UNC (Poor Ramses)

And bonus 5th seed Ohio State?

Also, is that supposed to be the Florida Gator lurking in the canals of San Antonio?

Why is UNC's mascot a ram?  What is the history?

Given that they may be an opponent, we should know this.

I miss the "Know Your Foe" series on the original M-Zone for moments like this.

Why is UNC's mascot a Ram? UNC cheerleader Vic Huggins is credited with beginning the tradition of Ram mascots at UNC. In 1924, during a rough year for the football team, Huggins decided that UNC needed an animal mascot similar to N.C. State's wolf or Georgia's bulldog. The idea for using a ram came from the nickname for star Tar Heel fullback Jack Merritt, known as the "Battering Ram."

Huggins obtained $25 from the University for the mascot and ordered a live ram from Texas. They named him Rameses. The ram arrived when the team was 2-4 and looking for inspiration. Rameses's first appearance on the sidelines was during the UNC-VMI game on November 8, 1924, a hard-fought Carolina victory. Rameses and his descendants have been fixtures at UNC football games ever since.

UNC introduced a costumed Rameses during the 1987-1988 basketball season. While the costume has gone through a few changes over the years, the student-worn ram costume has become an equally important part of the UNC athletics experience.
