So he's ineligible for this season. But he's still in school, and eligible for future seasons, right?
(Scanned the article quickly and didn't indicate how many years he's got left).

Let’s look at the NCAA.  This young man seems to have a fair and valid reason.

IIRC, a few years ago - a player on Georgia’s football team felt the environment in Athens was “unsafe for him to play.”   It was threatening - and oppressive.

The NCAA approved a waiver which allowed him to transfer with immediate eligibility.

At the same time time, this Georgia player’s sister was also enrolled at Georgia and exposed to the same environment.  She stayed at Georgia and didn’t have any issues.

The player’s name… Justin Fields.  He transferred from Georgia to Ohio State.

The NCAA is a joke.

The difference in this case (I'm assuming this made the difference) is that this would've been his second transfer. He want from NC Central to Kent State to UNC. This seems to be where the holdup is with their decision. I guess you can do it once for reasons that are suspect, at best, but not twice, even if for legitimate health reasons.

There have also been plenty of cases of the NCAA denying waivers to kids moving closer to home b/c it's just a little bit outside the radius to be considered "close enough to home" or b/c it's to help take care of a family member and not themselves or whatever stupidity it is.

But the kid who feels unsafe when his sister and every single one of his teammates don't? Let's give him a free ticket!

Completely impractical.  I'm not even sure that they could get insurance to host unsanctioned football games.  Plus, you have the issue that other schools won't want to play your team if you opt not to honor your commitment to following the rules of intercollegiate athletics.  Think of the enormous advantage you would have!  You wouldn't even have to accept any of the penalties imposed on your team during the game.

Yeah, the fact he didn't play at NC Central due to COVID should have been a mitigating issue as well.

I do get the NCAA not wanting to give away too many transfers, and if he had played at his first stop before going to Kent St. I would get more behind the NCAA's logic.  But yeah, this was a weird situation that the NCAA probably should have resolved differently.

I'd argue that there were a number of issues that argued in favor of a waiver, but the fact is that he transferred knowing that he might not get a waiver.

I think that he is a victim of the NCAA's promise to the smaller schools to crack down on transfer waivers.  That this promise was issued after he transferred, however, is just another argument in favor of granting the waiver.
