Naming the Basketball Court after Beilein
Someone on twitter brought up that Beilein should have a statue made after him. While i'm not sure about that since Michigan is far more judicious about whom they have memorialized with a statue, there have been discussions on this blog that Beilein should have the court named after him. I always assumed this would happen when Beilein retires, but would/should the decision of Beilein leaving the program on his own accord for another opportunity affect that?
In my opinion, no since Beilein left for a career move up to the NBA instead of moving to another NCAA head coaching job. But what do others think?
Frieder had a pretty good career too. Let's add him to the statue list. /s
This isn't comparable to what Frieder did (leave for another NCAA program). He's going to a different level of basketball.
It still feels crappy though.
You don’t name the court after someone who thought another job was better, even if it’s John Beilein.
You could call it "shade out court"
Seriously. I can't begin to get my head around anyone even entertaining the idea.
How about the exit sign?
+1 - This is a classic response!
a post that is so brilliant that you are pissed that you didn't think of it yourself.
well played
Good One.
Works for football too.....................
why? why?
It's like, not fair and stuff....
we can't have nice things..
pity party over I guess.
anger is setting in, so there's that. no, i feel depressed. I thought the golden age of Michigan Bball would continue for 3-4 more years.
<sigh>
back to work
A Beilein statue?
Wow this fan base is collectively losing its mind right now. This is an unexpected blow but I don't think we should make it more than it is, in all ways. No, I don't think there should be a John Beilein statue.
This.
If he won the title in 2013 and 2018 maybe then.
Not even then. He is leaving to coach another team, pro or not it doesn't matter. He's leaving of his own volition, and not to retire. That precludes him from any, and all naming rights or anything of the sort.
I'm with Timmmay on this. Beilein was faced with a choice, and he chose to bail on us for the NBA. That's fine for him and I'm not saying he's completely dead to me or anything but when you do that you forfeit the "legendary" coach status at the school you left. Bobby Bowden or Joe Paterno or Bo Schembechler (or probably Tom Izzo) get that kind of treatment because they were lifers. If JB wants the pros of leaving to the NBA, he has to take the cons too. He just lost his ability to be every Michigan fan's "legend."
There is a different side to that, though. Bowden and Paterno drastically overstayed, and it tainted their legend (though clearly in much different ways). Longer isn't always better. If Beilein did not think that he was going to be all-in going forward here or that he would have been staying for the wrong reasons, he made the right call and I am not sure he should get a deduction for that.
I don't think he should have anything named after him or have a statue of any kind, we never won a NC and that is like a pre-requisite for that kind of treatment. I does not take away from his status in my opinion though.
There should be a gold beilein statue that the players get to "tear down" at the end of the year. It would be expensive to replace, but we should build another gold statue for the next basketball class to "tear down" . Repeat or enlargen as needed for desired class size and starz.
Let's not get carried away.
No
No. Leaving DQ's someone from having the court named after them. I am grateful for all he has done to elevate the program, but no.
No, I would not name the court after him. He did a good job here and brought the program back from the dead, but I am not for naming the court after him. NCAA championships need to be won to name a court after someone.
Why don't we just go ahead and name it "The Greg Mattison Family Defensive Line Coach and Basketball Court" while we're at it?
/s
Also, I'm sick of our AARP coaches bolting for that armpit of a state down south.
No, I would not name the court after him. He did a good job here and brought the program back from the dead, but I am not for naming the court after him. NCAA championships need to be won or money donated to name a court after someone.
FIFY
You have to win a national championship to have a court or field named after you. And you cannot leave your program for a team in Ohio that is owned by an MSU grad that has a campus building named after him.
No, while John was great here I wouldn't call what he did legendary which is usually a requirement for such an honor. And now especially not since he's leaving.
It 100% depends on the circumstances around his leaving (which none of us know). If he was clear with Warde about his desire to leave then sure, it makes sense to talk about it. If Warde was blindsided buy it? Not so much.
No, under any circumstance. None of that matters. He's leaving. Not retiring, he's leaving to coach basketball somewhere else (in Ohio of all places).
Hard pass. You don't leave like this and get a court named after you. We all love Beilein and he certainly left us mcch better than he found us, but he won 0 national championships. Furthermore, the mechanics of his departure are so bad, that it negates a lot of the goodwill he gets from the non-national title achievements. He leaves after the hiring period for college coaches and with no forewarning for maybe the worst team in the NBA to take a job that he will 90% be fired from in three or four years. So if he brought the program from a 2 out of 10 to an 8 out of 10, his abrupt May departure kind of takes us back to a 5.
The fact is Gilbert played Beilein here to the detriment of UM. He knows he's knee deep in a rebuilding process that can only be done through the draft (no high level free agents are going to the Cavs). The Cavs will tank for the next three or four years, Beilein will develop some of those draft picks but is ultimately going to be let go for a more player friendly coach when they have the talent. My bold prediction, John Beilein will never coach an NBA playoff game, which is sad that this is the way he has chosen to go out.
I dont know, I feel like this sort of honor needs to be reserved for more deserving people ... like billionaire alumni who donate a crap load of money for the privilege.
Donald Ross Court??
Maybe he can get the 'Fins to hire Mork? Oh wait, nevermind.
I think it's a great idea... but today is simply not the day to suggest it.
Maybe name a sub shop after him, for the fun of it, but the court? No.
Now THAT would be CRAZY.
He’s not a Michigan man. There will be no statues or any buildings or courts named after him.
He is every bit of a Michigan Man.
He saved this program and left it in great shape.
Time will tell on your second point.
I'm afraid the timing of his departure, with very little advance notice, almost certainly means he didn't leave the program in great shape. Unless we make an improbable slam dunk hire, things could go South fast. It already looks doubtful we land any of the targets for the currently open roster spots, and now we have a good chance at losing Wilson and Bajema too, not to mention any transfers from the current roster that might follow from this. The roster is looking dangerously thin for next year and no great/obvious successors have emerged to lead the program.
He threw away a potential legendary career at Michigan to get fired by a walking bag of shit in 3 seasons.
Final Fours are awesome, but you need at least one national title banner to even be in the discussion for getting things named after you. Eventually, everyone will chill out and we'll all go back to just not caring about or noticing Michigan basketball for a couple decades. We've done that before, we'll survive doing it again.
Bo never won a national title...
And they don't play on Schembechler Field. They named the office building for football after the coach that was here for two decades.
And Bo didn’t leave his team the same way Beilein has chosen to.
Maybe I should have said "fields, courts or stadiums named after you." I guess Bo is a special case because he came to personify Michigan as a whole, and finished his career here. Name a basketball meeting room or something after Beilein, that's fine I guess.
Not now. If he had retired at Michigan then maybe. Not now.
Let's say he comes back in 3 years and wins the conference then retires. I'd say name it after him then.
I was in favor of naming the arena or court after him once he retires (as Michigan's HC) but after today, I'm not sure. I lean against. I love JB but he left us.
No. I love JB, but this is Michigan. He was here for only 12 years and won zero National Championships.
Michigan was Michigan before Beilein and will continue to be Michigan after he leaves. He got the program out of the pits of the late Fisher/Ellerbe tire fire. Let's not pretend the accomplishments of Orr and Frieder didn't happen.
No player is above the team, no coach is above the team.
No statues, and quite naming everything after somebody. I like to think that we are above that. And yes, I don't think Bo should have a statue either. I think it's tacky.
Nah. As big a Beilein fan as you'll find right here, but this was a garbage move when it comes the program.
A MICHIGAN MAN WILL ADORN THE MICHIGAN COURT
Literally fuck no
