Minick police report: "he almost fell on his face,"

While going through sobriety tests on the westbound side of Airport Blvd., Minick could not walk a straight line and had trouble keeping balance. At one point, when Minick bent over to tie his shoe, "he almost fell on his face," according to the report.

"I had to hold him up so he didn't fall and hurt himself," Cole's report reads. "Minick advised he couldn't do the test sober. The test was stopped for Minick's safety."

At St. Joseph Hospital, Minick was repeatedly told to peacefully sit on a stretcher for his blood test, but continued to ask to use the restroom. Instead, he "continued to refuse lawful orders." He was ultimately "forcibly" pushed down onto the stretcher after security was called to assist.

Aside from everything else, if a guy has to piss let him piss, it's not going to effect the blood test. Instead they make it a power struggle that results in use of force by the sounds of this.

The weather is up there on the OP's horse? He made a mistake. He is being punished by the legal system. That's good enough for me. If we fired people every time they committed a misdemeanor, the unemployment rate would be 25%.

You're making things up Mad Hatter, where did I comment one way or the other about what his punishment should or shouldn't be?

I didn't call for his firing. I do want it noted what he did and how it was or will be dealt with so that future situations can be put in context with this.

Consequences matter.  Job aside, if you are pulled over and charged with a DUI, you might deal with a fine and license complicaations.  If you happen to run over a couple kids on the way, good luck in court to you.  Same root cause, same bad decision, but very different outcomes.

All we need for world happiness is for Minick to never make the same mistake again? That is probably the greatest chance we'll ever have for world happiness! Seems like the world could put up a go fund me to support a large group of monitors to make sure he never makes the same mistake again and then we're all home free!!!

What if he would've hurt someone or something...does that change everything? Is that the difference being driving drunk deserving a second chance and an automatic firing?

Honest question.

Because if he hits a kid or a student, it's got more new coverage and he's gone immediately. Just wondering if that's the line...hurting someone vs. not hurting someone.

For me, and this comment is completely seperate from my questions about...for me, high level/high profile jobs come with high levels of responsibility and consequence. If you don't like or want that responsibility and consequence...don't take the job and the nice salary that comes with it.

Minick isn't the head coach or even a coach at all...but he's high profile enough to be on ESPN, on MGoBlog, he's not some intern that no one knows or cares about. To me, I hold him to a standard that I may not hold some random MGoPoster. Don't get me wrong, DUI is a DUI, whether you're a pro blogger or a school teacher or a head football coach or the Govenor, but the responsibility, profile and consequences to those jobs are all different. And while a DUI is wrong no matter WHO it is...the professional consequences very well be different for each of those positions - that's part of signing on the dotted line.

I'm still too embarrased by this to read up on it, so I do not yet have an opinion...but I hope people aren't making blanket statements when forming their own opinion.

I got a DUI for sleeping off a night at the bar in the parking lot. My friend watched me put my keys on the back tire so they weren't in my possession.

I magically am awoken by a cop without a working dashboard camera, with the keys in my lap.

What's your moral opinion of what my punishment should be? Should I lose my job? Should I have dickheads on the internet judging me?

Do tell.

You deserve no punishment. You were responsible enough to know you had no business driving. Minick is in an entirely different boat. If he had slept in his car and not driven, his DUI would have been bullshit. Minick was fortunate nobody was injured. I think he deserves a second chance, but not at Michigan.

Very true. If he had made the safe choice-even if technically illegal-we (on this blog anyhow) would probably congratulate him for being a role model of sorts. If he was arrested for sleeping one off in his car (a practice I am all too familiar with), this could be seen as an example of a man doing the right thing despite personal risk, and then accepting the punishment and moving on. Sadly I'm sure we all wish that is how the night went down.

Im so tired of these threads. If you've had more than four beers at a dinner, odds are you walked the fine line of a DUI.

He didn't hurt anyone, and if we punished everyone based off their potential to hurt someone... Jesus get off your high horses and chill.

unless you are the size of a terrier or the drinks are measured in quart quantities.

Here is a link (hopefully):

bottom line, 2 regular drinks puts a 200 lb guy at an .03 unless they are monster drinks.

Most drunk driving comes from being over served in restaurants/bars. If you really want to stop it, make harsher penalties for the source. Fact is cities make a bulk of their revenue for police funds from dwi's. The government isn't trying to stop it, only profit from it. They'll allow everyone to over serve and then hide in the trees waiting for someone to switch lanes without a signal and make 2k a pop.

Restaurants and bars should have a set limit they're allowed to serve customers. Yes, we all should be responsible and know our own limits and think out transportation beforehand, but judgement goes out the window when alcohol is involved. If you really want to stop drunk driving, cut it off from the source.

My two cents

Interesting idea, but I disagree to some extent. I used to live in a town that enacted policies like the one you describe. It didn't reduce drunk driving rates, but it did shift liability to 25 year old servers who were the only ones who, following a lethal drunk driving accident, could not afford capable legal representation.

When it comes down to it, servers are regularly coerced to over-serve drunk people for fear of loosing their livelihood (tips). I think if there were strictly enforced limits, we would also need to eliminate tipping on booze. Making servers wage workers would mean they would not depend on the largess of drunk people to pay rent... And they might be more comfortable cutting someone off.

This is America man! He made some bad decisions that night and he has to pay some consequences. It's fortunate that no one was hurt including himself. Accept it and learn from it. It's not on the establishment... You don't really want servers cutting you off when your not ready, or watering down your drinks. Your acting like someone who wants to take my truck because of gas mileage, or someone who wants my guns.

I have guns, a truck and an uber app so I can drink as much as I feel like. I certainly don't want them to limit the amount they can serve. I was just pointing out the fact that they aren't really taking strides to stop it. I'm from a small town in Louisiana where there are cops behind every tree and dwi checkpoints every weekend. They want you to drink and drive. It's their source of revenue.

On a side note, texting and driving is a much bigger problem right now imo. Give me your cellphone when you turn in your guns!

The man served his country in active duty as a Marine, had a clean record before this incident, and even helped out an injured citizen who was involved in an accident.  Also, JH clearly believes he is worthy of a second chance.  As I completely trust JH's judgment on character, and have many examples to believe this man is of high character himself, I concur with the second chance granted by his superiors.  Further on this basis, I believe he will be a positive example to those he leads moving forward.  It is more than good enough for me and should also be for all of you.  He has been punished enough, especially through the continued publicity over the incident.  Justice and MERCY must go hand in hand.
