Midweek Softball and a New Michigan Record

UM and MSU are in a mid-week make-up game that's critical for maintaining the edge going into this weekend's showdown with Minnesota for first place.

Junior Alex Storako has 20 strikeouts through eight innings. This is a Michigan single-game record. Unfortunately, her dominance has not only put her fielders to sleep, but they have remained woozy through their turns at bat. Neither team has scored entering the ninth.

It actually doesn't look that great. In a switch, schools that met a certain criteria submitted bids to host regionals. Twenty were chosen as potential sites for the sixteen regionals. Of the top 16 schools, only one, Louisiana-Lafayette, was not chosen (or may not have submitted, as these are otherwise all power-five schools). Michigan is 19th in the latest rankings and the NCAA has not even followed the rankings lately when it comes to the Big Ten. Minnesota wasn't even in the group of twenty.

So my guess is that hosting is probably a lower-than-50/50 proposition. But hopefully they won't get sent to Oklahoma or something dreadful like that.

And with strikeout 22, Storako finishes her gem. Lexie Blair's leadoff home run in the second extra frame was the only scoring in the game.

Storako was great and there was no room for error.  While the Michigan scoring wasn't there, we had a number of chances that we couldn't cash in on.  I'm hoping we were saving the runs for the weekend when we will need them against Minnesota.

Aggghhh this game was as frustrating on the offensive side as it was masterful on the defensive side.  Blair's the only one who wanted to be clutch tonight.  Hoping the bats just got a little confused by the midweek contest and will wake up this weekend.  Seems like Alex Storako throws up a gem every other game.
