Michigan Wrestling beats #10 Lehigh, 2nd win over Top-11 team this week

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Despite a Basketball game going on, Cliff Keen Arena was sold out for senior day as #14 Michigan took on #10 Lehigh.

Michigan collected a win over #11 Rutgers on Friday night and would just have one day of rest to get ready for a pretty solid Lehigh squad.

On the backs of two upset wins by unranked Wolverine grapplers over ranked Lehigh wrestlers, the Wolverines powered their way to a 24-13 victory for the second win over a Top-11 team in 3 days.

Michigan went 4-3 against Lehigh's seven ranked wrestlers.

Here's the results-

Class Match
125 #8 D. Cruz (Lehigh) def. #10 Conor Youtsey (U-M), 4-2
133 #7 Stevan Micic (U-M) def. #9 Parker (Lehigh) via tech fall, 21-4
141 Sal Profaci (U-M) def. #11 R. Cruz (Lehigh), 3-2
149 Malik Amine (U-M) def. #11 Gardner (Lehigh), 5-4
157 #12 Brian Murphy (U-M) def. Lane (Lehigh) via pinfall
165 #2 Logan Massa (U-M) def. #13 Minotti (Lehigh), 6-1
174 #5 Presich (Lehigh) def. #9 Myles Amine (U-M), 6-2
184 Price (Lehigh) def. Aaron Calderon (U-M), 6-4
197 Jackson Striggow (U-M) def. Murray (Lehigh), 9-0 via major dec.
Hwt #16 Vollaro (Lehigh) def. Dan Perry (U-M), 10-1 via major dec.

Michigan is now 7-4 and has 3 dual meets left in the regular season.

We will wrap up non-conference with a dual at Central Michigan on Thursday night before facing MSU on Sunday at East Lansing where Michigan is looking for their 7th straight win over MSU.

I applied to Lehigh for engineering in undergrad, but I did not get in.  They were the "Engineers" then, a name that fit them.  Now they are the non-descript "Mountain Hawks" which means nothing.

And sadly, that's the point.  Some people (who were not engineers) complained about the name Engineers because it was not "inclusive and representative" enough of the entire Lehigh student body.

Give me a break.  They are not boilermakers at Purdue or corn huskers at Nebraska either.

It's those unique indigenous names - yes even Buckeyes - that help make college sports great.

Some youg guys really stepped up!! Big wins from little Amine and Sal really powered that win.  Youtsey is still getting some rust off and is always a gamer come nationals.  I still think the team is a few studs away (prolly a 125 and 141) for next year to be able to compete in the top 3 and possibliity of a championship.

However, it is exciting to see some of these young guys really wrestling well lately!!

Can't wait for the big tens.  If you can't make nationals I emphatically suggest going down to the Big tens.  It is awesome.

"A few studs away for next year"??? Really.  We have all the top wrestlers coming back except for Murphy.  And we have 3 All-Americans coming back into the lineup -- Pantaleo, Abounader, and Coon -- who all redshirted this year due to injury.  Add those three to our current lineup and Michigan has podium potential at next year's NCAAs.

My son's friend wrestles 174 for Lehigh and his dad was my son's favorite baseball coach.  Wrestling is big here, possibly bigger than football at some schools.  His varsity baseball team has more D1 wrestlers than it had college baseball players at any level.
