Michigan Football Trivia on a Wednesday (now with answers!)
Last night I got to wondering: When has Michigan won a game in which they did not score a Touchdown? Doing research this morning, I believe I have found the 5 most recent games in which Michigan won without hitting paydirt.
So I pose the question to the readers of this blog: Can you name the 5 most recent games Michigan won without scoring a TD?
Bonus question: Can you name the game Michigan won without scoring a TD in regulation, but did find the end zone in OT?
I will post the answers later. No looking it up unless you are really stumped. And no checking SuperGuides either.
Hint 1: I was born in 1988. To the best of my research, two of these games were in my lifetime.
Hint 2: Michigan did score TD's in two notable poor weather games that resulted in victories (1998 Northwestern, 1950 OSU). However, there is one other they did not...
*****
EDIT #1: I am looking for games where Michigan did not score a TD in any way. This does not include games where Michigan may have scored a TD on Special Teams or Defense but not on offense.
EDIT #2: Answers - It looks like everyone that offered up answers were able to get the two most recent ones correct, 2012 vs. MSU (12-10) and 1995 vs. Purdue (5-0 nasty weather game). It does not appear anyone came up with the three oldest ones on the list, then again I doubted anyone would. I do believe these other three to be the most recent but if someone thinks I missed one I would be happy to look into it more.
- 1932 @ Minnesota (3-0)
- 1928 vs MSU (3-0)
- 1928 vs Illinois (3-0)
Most everyone got the bonus question as well, that was 2013 @ Northwestern. Maybe another time we could examine recent wins in which all Michigan scoring was via Special Teams.
I was at that game. The weather was not a factor. There was very little offense on either side in that game.
Purdue 1995 5-0, at NW 2013 9-9 at the end of regulation and then scored two TDs in OT.
most miserable game i've ever attended. started out drizzly near 50. ended with temps in the 20s and wind chills near zero.
purdue didn't cross mid field the entire game...until their final possession. i was dreading a last minute TD from purdue.
My buddy and I vowed to leave early and head to the bar to get warm once Michigan got up by more than two scores. They never did. Worst game ever.
That game was horrendous. I had an ice beard by the end. The sleet was somehow coming upwards directly into my face due to the wind. Pretty sure Mike Alstott was in that game for Purdue.
had every form of precipitation imaginable - rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow. My toes are still cold. All I remember is the terrible weather and a Woodson INT.
The bonus question is 2013 Northwestern because I was there.
I thought I learned yesterday that when people post threads with trivia questions here they are also supposed to post the answers.
This way is a lot harder.
De'Veon Smith scored in the third quarter of that game. Only reason I know that is I was there and my wife got pneumonia afterwards.
I'll say without looking at the comments: 1995 against Purdue or the game against them we won 5-0
Is this limited to offensive TDs?
IU - 2013
Rutgers - 2016
Four field goals and a Amani Toomer punter return for a TD in a 19-14 win at Illinois.
without scoring a TD on an awful Saturday for football or anything else. The score was 5-0 or 5-3, but Michigan won with a field goal and safety. IOf course, the Snowbowl game was won without a Michigan TD against Ohio State.
I actually cited the Snow Bowl in my hint. Michigan scored a TD off a blocked punt that day along with a safety and won 9-3.
What Michigan lacked in that game was a first down. Didn't get a single one.
I only know the two in my lifetime. MSU 12-10 in 2012 and the Purdue 5-0 game.
at home against the Spartans.
2013 Northwestern game ended up tied at the end of regulation on the strength of the last second FG by Gibbons (featuring the Dileo slide). M scored two touchdowns in OT (plus a FG) to win, 27-19.
And the Northwestern president was standing under the uprights as the ball went through and he frantically waved his arms as if he was saying, "No good."
That was also the game where Devin Gardner threw about 8 dropped interceptions by Northwestern receivers, two of which would have been easy pick sixes. If Northwestern holds on to half of them, I think we lose that game by at least 3 touchdowns.
At the time, I thought that was one of the most pitiful games I had ever watched. But then one year later, M00N happened.
Stayed for the whole game but saw none of the scoring. Scored just as we were entering the stadium and in the second half while I was with my friends son in the bathroom rubbing his feet (no comments, please). Purdue did not almost score at the end of the game. We were inside the 5 yard line about to score, but chose to take a knee as time ran out.
I can think of off of the top of my head where they won without scoring a TD was when they beat Purdue 5-0 sometime back in the 90s. But then again there was no OT. It was one of the best worst football games ive ever seen
Wow...... the majority of the comments include some semblance to "the most miserable game ever".
I realize the OP's intent wasn't to depress the blog but that may have been an unintended consequence.
Uplifting? Nah, it's not a bra.
5-0 in rain or snow storm ? not that long ago?
