Michigan Commits and Targets Dominating in U.S. Army All-American Bowl Practices

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Scout.com identified the top 5 stars from the East and West during the first day of practice for the U.S. Army All-American Game, and there are LOTS of friendly names on the lists.

For the East, WR commits Donovon Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black made the top five, along with Georgia DT target Aubrey Solomon and Florida OG target Tedarrell Slaton. East story here:

For the West, Jay Tufele (DT target from Utah) made the top five. Very glowing assessment of how well he's doing. West story here:

And there are going to be all sorts of idiot fans out there on Twitter.  I would have to think most recruits realize that, no matter what school you pick you are always going to have idiots messaging you stuff.

I'm sure Harbaugh/Mattison/Brown are recruiting the kid crazy hard.  He might just like the idea of another school.  I said earlier in this thread why wouldn't someone want to come to Michigan who plays on the d-line, well Alabama is the other school that tops ours, and its looking that thats where he wants to play.  I mean 11 scored on D this year, that's something that appeals to top players.

I can't imagine that Harbaugh and Co don't have a plan B and a plan C in some cases.  This class we have for '17 is fantastic!  The commits we already have are outstanding.  We will likely add at least a couple more from the list we are all familiar with.  We will also miss on some top guys as pointed out above.  We have a lot of talent and we also have elite coaching.

We will be ok.  I think we are already getting a little spoiled.  We get DPJ and then turn around and grieve that we didn't get Wilson.  Everytime one of our top targets goes elsewhere, this board is filled with whoa is us.  We aren't close to osu and alabama, wah wah wah.  I love Michigan because it's Michigan.  Whoever puts on the Maize n Blue jersey is a Michigan man and I'm going to give them 110% support.  And those that choose not to, will not get a second thought.

Getting a little tired of all the pissing and moaning about how we can't recruit just because a teenager who has MANY choices and influences doesn't pick us.  Cumong man!!!  We gonna be alright!

That's like saying the 2014 class was great because it finished 4th in the country and had peppers but glossing over only taking two OL.  Sometimes you can have a highly rated class and still miss on important pieces.  If we don't get a highly rated interior d linemen you are pretty much guaranteeing a true freshman being a starter in 2017 and your two deep this year is shit.  That's a bad situation regardless of how the rest of the class fills out.

There is a lot of time left still and maybe the staff can get Solomon back on campus. Maybe Tufele as well.

Have a plan; however, in looking at the DT rankings I see an uncommitted kid named Noah Elliss from the same school as Dylan McCaffrey. Dude is 6'5" 330 and a 4 star on Rivals. Any one know about him?

Noah Elliss had a monster game when Harbaugh and Fisch were there.  He was dominant, although he did get a couple of personal fouls for rag dolling the opposing QB on sacks.

After the game, Fisch and Harbaugh talked to Will Rodgers for awhile, but I did not see them with Noah Elliss at all.  It would be interesting to know why no offer has been made.

Harbaugh wants to win.

Winning requires as many great, smart, toughened athletes as possible.

Harbaugh will not lose on this critical path.  Recall Harbaugh doesn't like to recruit.  Harbaugh *loves* to recruit.

QED

Granted, we all watch Meijer pull in 5 star everybody in a 600 mile radius, but the pieces don't look very good working together in recent times.

I was just going to say something similar. I think one of the overlooked factors is the personality/mental makeup of recruits that Harbaugh and staff are looking for. Even the highest rated kids (Gary, DPJ, McCaffrey, etc) have their heads on straight. Not to say that everyone elses top prospects are head cases, but you can see from a distance what the recruitments look like with some of these 5* kids, and just see the red flags.

Remember the OL target from CA who shared in an interview a line that Harbaugh told him. "If you buy a pack of 30 blueberries and one is moldy, it will affect the others, and that's why I don't recruit moldy blueberries."

Irresponsible speculation time: any chance Asiasi moves to DT?  There are precious few options on the roster for conversion, and both OL and DL are needed.  The kid's already larger than Hurst, according mgoblue.

Yes, he looks like a great one at TE and Harbaugh loves his TE and he'll never move him and this will never happen.  But the need at DT seems so great.  And the kid's a great athlete with power and I'd bet Mattison can get him playing really well.

I think Asiasi chose Michigan because he wanted to play offense. He's played well so far too so I just don't see that happening. We do have some solid recruits who can play DT (Paea, Irving-Bey, Hudson, Jeter) so we should be okay as far as depth. What we need is an instant impact player, which Solomon and Tufele could be. If neither of them end up coming to Michigan then DT needs to be hit hard in 2018 (as in at least 2 top 10 DTs).

You can think Harbaugh is a terrific coach/recruiter and think the class is fantastic but also point out giant hole on the depth chart of both sides of the line.  Feels like a certain portion of the board believe that any complaint is ill-placed.

When injury plagued Mone is 50% of your experienced interior D-line there should be some angst about not getting a true NT in the class.  Same goes for OG and OT where there is next to no proven depth currently on the roster.

The thing i find so difficult it really knowing whether {player X} is a SDE, DT, etc.  Same for a lot of the SS / LB shuffling in the Don Brown system.  Could be the staff has a different expectation for postiion than the recruiting profile suggests.

but the major bowls/playoffs have proven that elite fronts are where you win in modern CFB. They can run all the fancy spread they want but if your guys are in the backfield .5 seconds after the snap it doesn't mean a thing. Conversely, being able to, ya know, pick up a first down to ice a game helps.

The DT/NY position goes has there been any chatter about Dwumfour in practice? I think he got a few snaps early in the year but wondering if he's likely to be in the two deep next year?

There has been some positive chatter on Dwumfour (I think from the Christmas camp). If we move Gary inside, then we would have four bodies on the interior next year. In 2018, the year that most of us are putting our hope in, Hurst will be gone and possibly Hudson and Irving-Bey could take his place. Paea (spelling?) is also an option, but I've heard he is a much better guard prospect. Either way, depth is definitely an issue for next year and talent could be an issue in 2018--though there is no way of knowing right now.

They've got some absolutely ELITE WRs on the way to join what was brought in last year.

I can't wait to see this group grow and mature together.
