So you would rather Alabama be higher?  What does rivalry have to do with it?  GT is UGAs rival doesn’t mean they are a good rival but they blew them out as they should have.  Beating OSU was a rival, but also a good win.  In short, I don’t think Bama has looked very good this year and are clearly ranked so high because of the brand.

Yeah, why do we even have preseason or early season rankings? Seems the rankings should start a few weeks in.

Teams not ranked preseason, but are ranked now.

2. Michigan

5. Oklahoma State

8. Ole Miss

9. Baylor

11. Michigan State

12. BYU

16. Houston

17. Pittsburgh

18. Wake Forest

19. San Diego State

21. NC State

23. Arkansas

25. Kentucky

13 of the top 25, and 7 of the top 12 were not ranked at the start of the season.

Conversely, teams that were ranked preseason, but not ranked now (with current record).

7. Iowa State 7-5

10. North Carolina 6-6

13. Florida 6-6

14. Miami 7-5

15. USC 4-7

16. LSU 6-6

17. Indiana 2-10

19. Penn State 7-5

20. Washington 4-8

21. Texas 4-8

22. Coastal Carolina 10-2

25. Arizona State 8-4

Also, Clemson was ranked 3, now 22, Texas A&M was ranked 6, now 24, and Oklahoma was ranked 2, now 13.

Well, the AP poll is a media poll. You know, Associated "Press".  Soooo, it's for press.  That's literally its purpose.  And since the CFP actually matters, it's not done until week 8 or 9 or whatever (although even that probably shouldn't be til the end of the year but money matters there too).

I don't really agree. It's a poll of the press, that doesn't mean it's for the press. Its purpose since the beginning was to determine who the best teams are by polling knowledgable followers of the sport (i.e. sportswriters)...mostly for the public who didn't have any other way of determining it since there was no playoff system.

Exactly!  It's nice to  be high in the AP and Coaches polls, but what really matters obviously for the playoffs are the committee rankings on Tuesday.  Go Blue!

PS - When was the last time Pitt, Wake, and NC State were all ranked above Clemson and the rest of the ACC (not counting ND, of course)?  Crazy.

Hmm, I sort of agree.

But with the College Football Playoff and nation-wide Conference Championship Games (which nearly functions as a Playoff itself), it does seem like we'll go to a more "pro sports" team strategy where games can legitimately not matter (like OOC loses, in getting to the Conf. Champ. Game, which if won leads to the CFP), as opposed to the pre-BCS model of AP/Coaches post-Bowl game voting (which overall I'm happy we've left behind, so long as we acknowledge what is "lost" by that choice)

Alabama simply didn't need to win this game. A loss changes nothing for their CFP bid, yes it effects their bid number (#1-#4), but more important is to stay healthy, and beat UGA, because if they do that, they're in no matter what (you could argue otherwise certainly, but they're not going to have zero SEC teams in the CFP, pretty much ever)

That is awesome. Rightfully so. **Checking the schedule to make sure we are not playing Purdue next. Exhale and happily look forward to pounding the shit out of Iowa next week.

Obligatory "just win."

In all seriousness, interesting that Cincinnati jumped Bama.

It doesn't matter one bit, but I'll be interested if Michigan is #2 in the CFP, I'd think we would be, with Bama #3 and Cincinnati #4.

Beat Iowa, Georgia beats Bama...and we're looking at Cincinnati in the #2/#3 game (in Dallas, I presume).  Okie St. #4, jumping ND and heading to Miami for the right to lose to UGA, 24-3.

This poll obviously makes more sense than the waterboy poll placing Michigan @ #3, but it's window dressing until next Saturday night.

GO BLUE!!!

So if everyone wins as expected it’s Georgia vs Ok State and we get Cincinnati. Alabama win would be annoying as that gets two SEC in and likely some weird seeding as they would not want a Georgia vs Alabama in the semi final. Cincinnati or Ok State loss would be annoying as it puts Notre Dame in.

I think if we beat Iowa, and Georgia beats Alabama, we get Cincinnati in the 2/3. If Alabama beats Georgia, we’ll get Georgia in the 2/3. I don’t think they’ll put us to #1 over a one loss SEC champ. Our best chance for the one spot was for Bama to lost the Iron Bowl and then beat Georgia.

But all irrelevant if we don’t win, so who cares. Just win the next three games!

It pretty much tells us that if Georgia, Michigan, Cincinnati and Ok. St. Win next week then that’s your Final Four.  I would approve of that
