MHSAA Football Championship Weekend
We've got a barn-burner being played right now between Ubly and Ottawa Lake Whiteford. Whiteford led 12-6 at the half, then stretched it to 20-6 before Ubly struck back to tie it up 20-20 early in the 4th.
The remainder of today's schedule is as follows:
Division 2 @1:30 pm---Warren De LaSalle vs GR Forest Hills Central
Division 6 @4:30 pm---GR West Catholic (my alma mater...GO FALCONS!!) vs Negaunee, the lone UP finalist.
Division 4 @7:30 pm---Goodrich vs GR South Christian.
As I finish my OP, Whiteford is driving deep into Ubly territory with 4:14 remaining in the championship game, game still knotted at 20 apiece...

TD Whiteford!
Followed by a two-point conversion, Whiteford leads 28-20 with 1:59 remaining but the conversion being reviewed.

Overturned, runner's foot slid out of bounds prior to the goal line, so it's 26-20.

rob, it used to be on fox sports detroit every year. is it being televised on that 'bally sports' channel?

Yep, Bally Sports Detroit.

Forest Hills Central may have a tough time today.

I'm rooting for all the GR/West Michigan teams (besides the three playing today, Caledonia plays Saturday in the division 1 championship and Muskegon Saturday evening in division 3).
From looking at the picks by retired freep writer Son of Swami (Mike McCabe) and by a panel of writers on MLive, all but West Catholic are underdogs. Watch out for the Caledonia defense, IMO they're good enough to stifle, stomp, and stuff Belleville.
I think all but possibly Muskegon have decent chances of pulling off upsets.

What a blitz by Whiteford on Ubly on 4th and long!
The resulting desperation pass was batted away by the Whiteford secondary, and they then proceed to run the clock out.
Final score: Whiteford 26- Ubly 20
Congratulations to Division 8 champions Ottawa Lake Whiteford!

Nothing going well early for Forest Hills Central. De LaSalle up already 21-0 after 4 1/2 minutes.

Historically, private schools seem to be really well represented in the championship games.
November 25th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
Because they can draw kids from multiple school districts. Their ability to recruit is grossly unfair. I think many states have separate playoffs, and Michigan should too
November 25th, 2022 at 3:06 PM ^
I don’t believe that’s the case (that many states do that).

New Jersey splits playoffs into public and private

California too
November 25th, 2022 at 5:52 PM ^
There are some, for sure, but only a few.
November 25th, 2022 at 3:54 PM ^
There’s multiple rules “bent” by private schools, sports wise and otherwise.

I remember in the 00's it seemed like every year a UP hockey team would make it to the final 4 or state finals until they ultimately went up against Cranbrook.
November 25th, 2022 at 5:56 PM ^
Playing Cranbrook in the mid-90s is an experience I won’t forget. That said, UP teams have fared just fine against them (and whoever else they play when they come downstate).

Hence, Grand Rapids CC winning something like 5 straight state titles over multiple divisions.

While I agree that the private and parochial schools can and do recruit, creating an unfair advantage, it's also more widely done by public schools than folks realize, especially downstate and in metropolitan areas.
Belleville is only a current example but it has gone on for years; "school of choice" transfers make it even easier to accomplish.
My brother in law was an assistant football coach for a few decades in a GR area public school district. They were geographically near enough to a school with the initials "EGR" that they lost a few talented players to EGR over the years; eventually EGR got busted (largely because they were so very blatant about it).

Congratulations to Division 2 Warren De LaSalle on their second consecutive State Championship.
They completely demolished GR Forest Hills Central earlier this afternoon 52-13.

In the game going on right now, GR West Catholic led early 14-0 before Negaunee roared back to tie it 14-14. The Miners scored a TD tonend the half and then opened the 2nd half with a 90+ yd TD return. GRWC has since retaken control with explosive plays and leads 31-14 with 5:23 remaining in the 3rd quarter. GO FALCONS!

Congratulations to my Grand Rapids West Catholic Falcons!

In the 4th and final MHSAA Football championship game today, it's GR South Christian bringing home the Division 4 🏆. Congrats to the Sailors, winners by a final score of 28-0 over Goodrich.
