Meta: Timing and Challenge of Posting Podcasts

Submitted by mvp on November 1st, 2019 at 11:45 AM

Question for those that are involved: How difficult and/or time consuming is posting podcasts?

I'm curious (and trying not to complain) because in the past it has seemed like the MGoBlog Roundtable podcast dropped in time for my morning drive on Fridays.

Two weeks ago, I never saw the podcast.  Last week, it came late enough that I downloaded the WTKA segments and listened to them.  And again this week, it is mid-day without it appearing.

If it is challenging, I'm content to get it from WTKA.  However, it is much simpler for me to get it along with other MGoBlog podcasts and it comes in a simpler format here.  I'm just trying to get some insight because I know if I don't listen to it today, I won't get to it before the game tomorrow.

The roundtable used to be posted on WTKA's feed shortly after it was recorded, and we have a guy whose job it was to get that into a recording so I can post it. That takes about an hour of his time I believe, and then it takes me about half an hour to make a cover and take notes on it. Once WTKA started posting them early Friday morning instead of Thursday afternoons, our guy couldn't get to them before he has to get to his real job, and nobody else has stepped up to take over. They're usually not up on WTKA until 7am.

My Thursdays and Friday mornings are already a wreck because I stay up late to get FFFF done and I have to prep for MGoRadio (get music, prep the ads, get guest(s), set up live feed, set up articles) then get to Ann Arbor and set up there, not to mention take the kids to school and pick up the preschooler at midday.

Dunno if it helps your guy but the podcast feed from WTKA seems to come out shortly after the segments air. I don't check their website, but I listened to the roundtable yesterday shortly after it came out.

Not that you need to be on anyone's schedule for producing the excellent, free content we all enjoy FASTER, of course.

Yeah I didn't check for it until the afternoon but I believe i got all their segments before 2 PM est.  I use overcast, not sure if that matters or changes anything - somehow i doubt it - but throwing that out there as well.

@Seth... I could possibly help with this. I live in Germany, so early for you guys would be midday for me. It's not clear to me exactly what would need to be done, but I imagine I could help out. One of my many hats is as a software engineer, so I can't imagine that it would be difficult for me to figure out.

Funny, I was just coming on here to grumble about this exact dilemma. In almost every case that I can recall the Roundtable is released as a WTKA podcast by late morning on Thursday. Normally I skip that and wait for the MGoBlog version to come out on Friday morning so I can listen while I'm driving to work or walking my dog. Mostly I hold off because it's annoying AF to listen to the TKA podcasts because the segments flow backward for some reason--as the first segment ends you have to go back to the app and download the second one, then the third, etc. Also you have the annoying TKA ads.

I'm also wondering if there is a usual time when the pre-game podcasts drop. Is it late Friday? Saturday morning? I know this is recorded Friday evening and there is likely a time crunch to get it released so we can listen to it, you know, before the game. Don't know the logistics, but ideally you guys would do the pre-game podcast on Thursday so people have all day Friday to listen. Just my two cents--I love the podcasts and I think if we had more time before Saturday to listen you would get more downloads and therefore more $.

If you're trying to get the WTKA podcasts to play chronologically in a podcast app (assuming Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or something), just hit play on the first segment, then navigate to the second segment and find the "Play Next" or "Add to Queue" option and repeat with the third segment.

Just wanted to say thanks to Seth for addressing this openly. I too miss getting the podcasts promptly on my MGoPodcast feed, and it's nice to at least have some clarity as to why. Thanks, Seth!

Another tip. The mgopodcast after games seems to be on the podbean podcast site sometimes hours before it's on mgoblog in case you're waiting for it.

Copying and pasting the link on mobile doesn't seem to work for me (-_-), but if you search podbean mgoblog you'll find it.
