Loins to hire Brad Holmes as next GM

Per the Detroit papers. Extensive scouting experience, but obviously first time GM. 18 years in the Rams organization.

I'm all for giving the guy a chance, but I suspect this means Saleh will not be the new coach.

First time GM who won't talk back to the Fords or Rod Wood.

Probably had to agree with whatever coach the ORGANIZATION wants - and not be the decision maker on the hire.

Seems very on brand for the Loins.

Here's to another 3 years or mediocrity or worse before the "new" administration is swept out the door.

I think what he is saying is that the Ford family has a long history of hiring people who suck up to them as opposed to hiring people who will build a winning team.  Go back to Russ Thomas and WC Ford, Sr.  Thomas ran the team into the ground but Ford loved him, in part because Thomas supported him in his battles with the bottle.  Or WCF, Jr hiring and keeping Matt Millen basically because Millen was fun to talk football with.  Fords tend to hire people who view the job as "be a friend and fun to hang out with"  as opposed to "winning the Super Bowl."   And they appear to be keeping their personal finance guy, Wood, in his place in the organization so that even if the GM and coach are competent they will be kept in their proper place.

I don't mind this hire, but since they emphasized they wanted experience for at least one of the 2 positions, I fear this means they'll hire a retread or Bevell as head coach. It'll likely be Lewis, Bowles, or Bevell, in my opinion. Not good.

Saleh is having second interviews everywhere except here. Maybe the Lions want the new GM to weigh in. This should be fun since he has no experience in this area.

If Bevell comes back with his uninspired play calling, I'll be having another Fall of Lion-free Sundays.

This may be a little off-topic but I had a dream last night that I was served a new delicacy at a Super Bowl party called "Lion Cakes". They were Honolulu blue cupcakes with silver frosting and covered in pineapple Mountain Dew-infused whipped cream.

Seems like Bevell will be retained.  You know, when the Loins should have retained a coach, they dumped Moeller to the curb.  Now that they need to go fresh, they'll keep the old, stale smell from the last purged office.

This is all very Lions-sy and provides further evidence that Sheila Hamp is, indeed, a Ford.

Downvote for being that guy... And an upvote for the original poster to wash away your negative attitude.

Don't ever disrespect a poster who properly calls our Detroit NFL team the LOINS.

They shall forever be known as the LOINS in these parts of town from here on out.

I don't much about Holmes, but if his career path is any indication (i.e. started out at Enterprise Rental Car, moved on to public relations for the Atlanta Hawks and then the St. Louis Rams, before ending up as the Rams' college scouting director for the last 8 years), he has at least demonstrated a willingness to work hard and do what it takes to achieve his goals.  Let's just hope Sheila Ford Hamp trusts this hire and doesn't meddle too much.

That being said, what's the rationale behind removing Saleh as a potential HC candidate?  Is it because a first time GM needs an experienced HC in place in order to succeed (or, more likely, lower the likelihood of failure)?  Regardless, I say the Lions do the unconventional and treat this as a complete rebuild and hire Saleh, but make it known that he and Holmes will be afforded an extended period of time (say 4-5 years) to get things moving in the right direction.  It's not like we have any superstars who would be against that.

I am pleased by this hire, but not super excited. I am glad, however, the Lions have guys like Spielman and Barry Sanders as consultants signing off on it.

I don't trust Ron Wood as far as could throw him. I would hope Holmes works with these guys to bring in right coach as well.
