Katelynn Flaherty: UM record 10 3's, No. 21 WBB beats PSU

Submitted by tlo2485 on

I just noticed this headline on ESPN and thought it was noteworthy. Maybe some of the guys should stop by their practice and work with her on their shooting. The ladies are quietly putting together a nice season at 12-2.

Flaherty has 10 3s, No. 21 Michigan women roll over Penn St

Katelynn Flaherty had a school record 10 3-pointers and scored 33 points, Hallie Thome had a double-double and No. 21 Michigan used a 20-0 run in the first quarter to roll to an 89-69 win over Penn State in the Big Ten opener on Thursday night.

you can sit in the lower bowl for cheap, and they're a fun team to watch - we make a trip down for a mens / womens turnaround weekend once a year, and we always have a great time...this year it's jan 6/7 - we'll see the men pound illinois on saturday, followed by a HUGE women's game against #12 ohio state.

flaherty really is terrific "not just a shooter", and hallie thome is an outstanding inside scorer.  deja church and hailey brown are frosh stars-in-the-making.  AND, the best recruiting class in school history (#12 in the country) is coming in for 2018.  uconn?  no.  but big ten titles?  sure.  it's in range.  watch 'em, they're coming on.

She shot 59% (10-17) for 3-points against an excellent, swarming PSU defense, several at NBA range. A remarkable performance. Tickets were $1 for this game, almost 5000 people showed up. No excuse not to go and see the best shooter in Michigan history, especially for the upcoming OSU game (Jan 7) and MSU game (Jan 21).

She's also climbing up the Michigan all time points list and the B1G all time points list as well.  With 2,337 points, she's now 9th all time in B1G history and 3rd all time in Michigan history behind Glen Rice and Mike McGee.  And considering she averages 21.9 points/game, she'll most likely finish her career well above Mr. Rice as Michigan's all time leading scorer.

LOL

I turned on the game and saw 9:30 left in the 1st.

I thought it was halves like the boys- as if they went 0-0 the 1st 10mins. (M 0 0 PS !!!!!!)

this happend to me a few years ago when UConn (-44) was playing UAlbany in the NCAA tourney. Over the radio they say "UConn is up 25-15 with 2 left in the 1st." I thought Albany was having a decent 1st half. NOPE - that's at the Qtr and Uconn won like 99-40

If you didn't click the article, Coach Barnes-Arico got her 123rd win, tying for first place all time. This is only her 6th season, so that's also a testament to where the program's been for the overwhelming majority of its existance.

The 10 3s not only broke the Michigan record, it's tied for the second-most in Big Ten history. KBA's building a nice program here. It's too bad Flaherty's in her last year. She's the only two-time first-team Big Ten player in the history of the program. She'll be hard to replace, though it's interesting to note that at 5-7, she's three inches shorter than anyone else on the roster.
