Interesting article on Stephen Ross' 2011 pursuit of Coach Harbaugh
This article reinforces how Coach Harbaugh is just a different kind of guy. He basically turned down an extra $35m because he didn't want to relocate his family. This is one of the reasons that I have thought that Las Vegas was out of the question for Harbaugh in this coaching cycle. Not to impugn Las Vegas, but it doesn't seem to be the most favorable environment to raise a family. If Harbaugh didn't want to relocate his family from the Bay Area to South Florida, I highly doubt he'd be receptive to moving them from tranquil Ann Arbor to Sin City.
Good read!

I have the same feeling that he doesn’t want to relocate unless Sarah is begging him to go back west or something….but I also have a feeling that Vegas, outside of the main drag, is probably a decent place to raise a family. I’ve known several who spoke very positively of growing up in the Vegas area.

I'm not sure I agree with this. According to the internet (not always reliable) they met in Las Vegas where Sarah lived and worked as a real estate agent. It's not impossible to think that she'd want to move back.

I have family in Vegas, they absolutely hate it.

Well, everywhere pales in comparison to the UP.

Have you been to Scandinavia yet?

Yeah it's basically just a lame suburb outside of the strip. My friend from NYC moved there because they had good incentives to attract teachers but he's definitely not in love with it.

Vegas is a city that you either love or hate with a passion if you have lived there. I hated it when I lived there.

I go to Vegas constantly and also have family there. Besides that 5 mile strip vegas is pure garbage. People that live there will tell you that as well and their schooling system is one of the worse in the country. UNLV has like a 40% graduation rate.

"worst" (correction posted mostly for the irony)

"Not to impugn Las Vegas, ..."
Reader, Las Vegas was impugned.

I got lots of friends in Vegas. Beyond the Sin City rep, and the flash, there's a real town with real families. Kinda homey.

Outside of the strip, Las Vegas is the blandest city I’ve ever been to. Just stucco cookie-cutter houses, big box stores, and strip malls as far as the eye can see…then desert for hundreds of miles in all directions.
I mean I live in Irvine, CA, which is pretty much suburbia as and is hardly an exciting place on its own, but man, I’d lose my shit if I lived in Vegas.

Yeah, the food scene is underrated and the natural scenery is striking in parts, but in terms of cityscape it is a flat strip mall from one end to the other.

Not too far of a drive sure but I was struck driving out of Vegas how it's barren rock. There's not even scrub brush around for a while. At least going towards the Goober (leaving that autocorrect) Dam.

Is that downstream from the Gomer Shazam Dam?

If you get away from the main tourist areas, Vegas isn't that bad and real estate was pretty reasonable. That may have changed since they brought in the Raiders. When I was there last, the stadium was still being built. I have a friend from MMA that is now a realtor there, but since I'm not moving there, I never think to ask him how the market is.

Vegas—and the rest of the Colorado River basin area—is facing horrific water issues. That may not matter to people pulling down seven figures, but the current situation is not sustainable in the long term. I can’t see raising a family there.
