How potential coaches feel after reading mgoblog/press

Submitted by MrSmith on

More serious is what we players are looking for in a new coach:

1.  Passionate about winning

2. Cares about the players and their families by checking up and seeing how they are doing

3. Very Strict on dicipline because at the end of the day you are building a young man on how to be responsible for their own actions

4. Have passion for the game in general and you can tell easily

5. Are serious about education and academics

6.  Community involvement.  Having players be more active and apart of normal student activities

7. Agressive and caring coaching style and getting on you if you have a mistake and making sure you learn from it

8. Having fun at the end of the day and enjoying a great game of football

Vincent, you are my favorite board poster by a long shot. I find it incredibly enjoyable having a former player be an active member of this blog. That you bring updates to many things, not just football makes it all the better.

That being said, I cosign on every single point you have made in your OP. Thank you.

Although by the end of the season, I was so fed up with our players looking like passive nice guys that don't play with any intensity that I was yelling stuff at the TV like "We need to recruit some crazy people." and "I don't care if we steal crab legs or punch people at bars, I just want to win."

This past season has pushed me to the brink of winning above all else. I've never felt this way before. It's unfortunate.

Thank you for your perspective.  I would like to ask where you would put actually winning on your list?  I would hope winning would be a biproduct of a coach who can sucessfully achieve what you listed, but I also imagine there are coaches who can do all you listed, but for some reason just can't coach their teams to wins.  Or is this more of a non-issue for you or other players as long as the coach cares about what you listed?  Honest question.

There is a lot more things which could be implemented in a coach.   Winning is important and also building a team that plays together and is a family is a big part of it too.  This are just some of the thoughts that we could think of.   Winning comes when every one is working together and has the right discipline and passion.

Are you trying to imply that Michigan cannot find a Head Coach that pocesses all of the qualities and can lead the team to win?

Brady Hoke Has the qualities and Loves Michigan in a way he might have tried too hard. We know he tried. The last time I seen a real Passion on the Football Field was Denard Robinson. I am not trying to say it was not there, with all of the outside destractions this year. I know that the passion was there I just didn't actually see it.

A Little with Derek Green. Devin Gardner and some other players have it, way too much critisism from outside to carry over during the game. If the Fans, that would mean US lose hope, that carries over to the game. This started back in September and WE gave the team a hole to start crawling out of. Social Media does make a difference.

We are getting a dose of Social Media right now in the Hunt for a New Coach. I have already read concerns of how is Michigan going to look if a Coaching Prospect turns us down. Can you imagine the Social Media on a football player taking the field that is expected to WIN?

Now we are asking for a HAIL MERRY in a Coaching Hire.

needs a confident winner. A guy who falls into that category possesses all the characteristics you are seeking fulfilled in my book.

He is not a win at all costs guy, but he comes closer to that percepton than just mouthing the principal of winning. He also understands how playing the game at a high level is balanced by the values espoused and expected  at the University of Michigan. This man presents a public assurance of strength and ability built on background and success in knowing how to motivate and develop a team that understands the sacrifice and accountability needed in the pursuit of excellence, meaning being a consistent championship contender both in league and nationally.

Moreover, this coach will readily accept and acknowledge that Michigan within its schedule has special games with rivals that need to be beaten in order for this team to accomplish said goals. This is a must and simply comes with the terrain of this great position in college football.

I believe few men actually can step right in and make the necessary changes to win at a high level. But we have focused on an immediate answer who is my opinion is the best and only real anwser: Jim Harbaugh. Certainly there are a list of other candidates, some with Michigan ties and backgounds of greate career success. And those candidates should be pursued even as Harbaugh remains available with first refusal rights.

I hope he sees that the community wants to win with a bit of class, and we are realistic - we don't expect Alabama or OSU success off the bat.  Just a sense that things are getting better.

Is this a list from the unique perspective of Vincent Smith or did you colaborate with former teamates to come up with this list? Either way, we all greatly appreciate the insight.

The picture in the OP is absolutely spot on.... the fact it comes from a former player makes it even funnier.

Mr. Smith, please tell me it was intentional that you used a Brady Bunch moment to illustrate the uncertainty of finding our next coach after...Brady.  Even if it wasn't, it was genius!

...Coach to put together a first rate coaching staff.  If the HC can't do that, he'll fail, even if he get's a "10" on all of the other 8 criteria.  For example, because of the multiplier effect and their responsibilities, those staff coaches will interact with players 10 times as much as any HC.

If you look at the coaching tree of Bo Schembechler and Hayden Fry, you'll see two coaches who knew how to do that.  There are many other successful HCs who fit that mold as well.

I hope the new coach re-opens the Pahokee pipeline.  It was good for Michigan, and you can see by looking at people like Vincent, Martavious, and Brandin, it was good for Pahokee.
