Holtz: Hoke's remarks "could come back to haunt" Michigan.

Submitted by Jasper on

In the gym this morning I had the (dis)pleasure of listening to Lou Holtz, Mark May, and Rece Davis on "College Football Final." In case anyone is wondering, they would have been hard to avoid. Multiple TVs blaring, etc. (I'll admit to having at some least some interest in the program.)

They showed the Michigan highlights right after Notre Dame's and moved into a quick discussion of next week's game. It was noted that the next two games will be the last in the series for now. Holtz took the opportunity to say that Hoke's "chicken" remarks "could come back to haunt" Michigan. When asked by Davis whether he thought ND was afraid to keep playing Michigan, he said "Nooooooooooooo."

Lou Holtzshz is such an ND homer its not even funny.  Hoke cleared it up and said that it was the ND administration who were 'Chickens' and not really the players or the coaches.

As I recall, Lou Holtz sneered a little bit at the remark back when it was first made in May too, saying on ESPN that Notre Dame was simply doing it to accommodate their agreement with the ACC and that it had nothing to do with being afraid of Michigan moving forward. He also said then that he was afraid that Hoke would "regret having said that". Whatever, Lou.

I mean what's he supposed to say? I love piling on Lou Holtz as much as the next guy but he's just trying to get his base riled up before the game. Everyone is patting Hoke on the back for the comments and getting pissed off when Domers react, how we expect and how they should.

There was even this asshole from CMU at the game a couple rows behind me who was shouting the whole time shit like, "You [CMU] guys are so much better than them!" I can understand rooting for your team and such, but it does get to a delusional point when you think that CMU would have a chance against Michigan if only the coach would put in the players you want.

The guy went to Kent State, was an assistant at 5 different schools, and served as head coach at William & Mary, NC State, Arkansas, Minnesota, and South Carolina.

I never hear him talking about any of those schools or wildly overestimating their prospects.  Everybody else on those shows seems to make an attempt to objectively analyze the school they attended/love, even if we know they want that team to win every week.  Chris Fowler doesn't talk about how the Buffs are going to shock some people every year.  Even Lee Corso is more even handed in his buffoonery (Would you know he went to FSU or coached at IU if you just watched Gameday?)

That they could.

However, I think the focus has been on ND for weeks, and maybe that is why Gardner had a rusty start yesterday (for a guy who loves to watch film, it seems like he was confused by Central's coverage).

It'll be a classic no doubt, but short internet loverboy and a suspended QB, and assuming Garnder cleans up pick-fest from last year, I think we win. (We could have last year even with pick-fest.)

Notre Dame has no real meaning for us this year beside the rivalry and serving as an early barometer for how games against ranked teams go. They lack the power to haunt us or decide our fate, conference play will decide the latter. Frankly we could lose to ND due to freshmen (redshirt and true) being freshmen and still be fine since our conference schedule is backloaded. Obviously you play to win, but this game really on matters because of "To Hell with Notre Dame."

How were you able to understand him with all the marbles in his mouth? I feel bad for the intern who has to wash the desk. Mark sits farther and farther away every year

Everytime spit boy has opened his mouth about notre dame HIS words have haunted them.

In 2007 he said he "liked their chances".....and they went 3-9.

In 2009 he said notre dame would be playing florida for the MNC.....and they went 6-6.

Last year he said notre dame would win the MNC by beating Bama.....and they lost 42-14.

Up yours lou. Michigan is gonna fry the chickens and eat them Saturday. So much so that they're gonna change KFC to MFC because Michigan will have the new recipe to frying chicken perfectly.

glad to see them go.  They want all the benefits of playing in a conference without being in one.  They should have chickened out years ago.

This is exactly why I'm not sad to see the series end. Only Notre Dame would be greedy and arrogant enough to request being part time members of a crappy conference just so they can have the benefits while still maintaining a mostly independent status. And the ACC has no balls whatsoever and actually AGREES to let the Irish be part time members. That's a joke. You're either a full fledged member or you're not. The ACC should have told ND to f*ck off and I wish the B1G would as well. As for Holtz, who cares what he says? He's a delusional 100 year old man who speaks worse than Daffy Duck and is so biased that he picked ND to be national champions 20 consecutive years. A clown's words should never be taken seriously and he proved that long ago.

Sure, guys like Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit are biased towards their schools. The difference is that despite this they remain objective enough to still provide interesting analysis at least some of the time. They can usually separate what they want to happen from what they think will happen.

Holtz, on the other hand, is completely incapable of providing any interesting analysis of Notre Dame. Completely. He cannot separate what he wants to happen from what he thinks will happen. As Wolverine Devotee pointed out above, Holtz always picks Notre Dame to win regardless of what their actual chances are. The only suspense is in how exactly he's going to phrase it. As an analyst on Notre Dame, Holtz is useless, boring and not worth my time.

It's too bad, really, because he is a bright guy and was a good football coach. You'd just never know it from his commentary.

I caught about of a minute ofthe show when Davis plays a judge and May and Holtz argue their cases. Holtz kept referring to Kevin Sumlin as Sutherland in an unwatchable "skit". I quickly remembered why I don't watch that show anymore.

Screw Lou, how about the manner in which DB was notified that ND was at least temporarily discontinuing the series......handing him an envelope at the start of the game last year.  Talk about complete disrespect.  Screw ND.  I guess they would rather play in front of a half-packed stadium at Purdue.

At this point, I'd keep them out of the B1G, even if they were to come begging.

It isn't that Holtz isn't a ND homer because he is and it's not -- Counterpoint : Desmond, guys! -- it's that Holtzsch is expected by the ND fanbase to be this way. He has said so many things like this throughout the years that NOBODY takes him seriously.... He's just getting the fans something to act indignant and upset about. It's like when a fan of an opposing team posts the same on a message board ....yeah, LOU, if the grand, almighty Irish need Hoke's remarks to fire them up, they're in deep sh*t .. But if the ND fans need to act as if they've been disrespected by Hoke's calling it as he sees it, well ..... To Hell with Notre Dame!!! GO BLUE!!!

But it's not even his views on ND that trigger my antipathy, it's his contention that Ohio is the second best team in the country after watching everyone play yesterday.

Ohio looked and played all-world for three series while Buffalo was reeling from the shock and awe of their environment and first game jitters, before beginning to sidetrack that offense. If you say that the Buckeye Oline which sprang Jordan Hall for several terrific runs, was superb yesterday, I would agree. If you say they were dominant as Holtz implied, I part company.

Do you think the Buckeyes would have beat Clemson or Georgia yesterday, neutral field or the Shoe? No way. They wouldn't have beat Texas A&M or Alabama, LSU or maybe TCU. And Michigan would have taken them out.

Forget Holtz. The old coaches on those shows are really slipping.

Somewhere sometime long ago, Coach Holtz had to decide how he was going to play his TV persona "Lou Holtz". He decided to take the easy way and never pick against ND and always gloss over things. Why? Who know? Maybe he does very well speaking before ND alumni groups and such. Maybe he just can't let it go and maybe it is the simpler easier way to go. Being more objective is actually hard - no knee jerk response, no need to work through the many difficult grey issues - just simple for our team or against or team thinking; just turn off those higher cerebral centers and let that reptillian primitive part of the brain take over.

While they do show their affection to their old schools you have to credit both Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit with making the more difficult choice of actually attempting to see other sides of issues and positions. Fortunately the fandom for the Wolverines is rational enough to accept that as a good thing. It would be hard to imagine Desmond Howard not being able to live in Ann Arbor if you were to actually criticize the Wolverines on ESPN unlike the situation in Columbus and Herbstreit.

Holtz also said A&M has a better chance at winning a championship because of yesterday's Manzel incident. I honestly think the guy is starting to get senile and I feel sorry for him.
