Hoke on shane morris late in game

Submitted by newfoundhbomb on

hoke on the radio was asked why shane came in the game.  said they were gonna make a change but decided not to because devin is a senior and it was special for him to finish the game, his last time playing against MSU.  my response is what the hell dude.  play to win the damn game.  he tries way to hard to baby his players.  he coaches them soft and in return they play soft. devin makes so many mistakes and he knows that they won't bench him.

is truth.

And all of the story. There is nothing more to say on it. So let's all agree to try not to ask again: ok? I mean, it's like this:

Oh. Devin is playing badly again. Bring in a backup?

Oh. Yeah. Right. We tried them all. And they're all worse options right now. Not any shred of question on that. So we just have to live with DG & hope more good DG starts showing up, for longer

Look, I know that for us, as fans, there's nothing left that this team could achieve that will make up for what's happened so far. But there are still 4 games to play. Winning three of those would mean going to a bowl game. Winning the last game of the season would mean beating our most hated rival. The kids on the field still have something left to play for. Taking that away from them on top of the shitty season they are already have is not fair to them.

It gives the players 15 more practices and training.  OSU is still OSU.  A winning record is a winning record.  You only have so many snaps in your life time.  CFB is fun and important to these kids and to the program.

playing for each other, for the time of their lives and some of them for the NFL draft.  The young guys would get experience as well.

There is a ton more to play for here.

That said - I think the team would perform marginally better under Nuss.  Nuss has a poor row to hoe and the rest of the season would give him a bullet on his resume come next year.  I don't think Hoke would be bitter at this.  He knows the expectation.  If he was gracious Mattison would stick it out until the end I think for the sake of the kids who play for him.

Funniest part is Morris' throw wasn't that bad either.... This is just beyond stupid reasoning on Hoke's part.

Hoke just seems to have the dumbest reason for all his decisions, really stupid shit answers- waffling, indecisive, no real priorities, just stupid ass muddled thinking

What is his IQ? Room temperature?

Correct--Hoke shouldn't even have considered letting Morris see the field in that situation.

We know how good Gardner is, we know how good Morris is.  The fact that there is still a QB controversy in some people's minds (including the coaching staff) is baffling.

That was a rivalry jug game and he stuck with Morris until the bitter end. I honestly think Hoke is losing it. He's starting to sound like Rod Marinelli towards the end of his Lions tenure.

There will no bowl season.  The season is a lost cause

He Needs the experience.

Gardner should play WR as that is his only chance to play in the NFL.  He might as well get some experience so he can get drafted.

Gardner is not a QB, he's athlete that has the most experience playing QB, that doesn'tr mean he's good at it.

And lastly, Gardner should give back the "98" jersey.  He's a good kid, but doesn't deseve to wear it anymore.

Right. These guys don't go the whole way.

QB is the most important position on the team. Our QB play has been awful against real opponents the past 2 years with a couple of exceptions. Getting Shane experience for next year should be top priority, not some fantasy of winning out the season.

So they only thought about it from the time that Shane went in until he threw the out route?

He is inept and not qualified to lead in a HC position.

You don't think about it in between a play or two you think about it during the TV timeout and then you make a decision and you stay with it

in the next series.

But then in a surprise turn of events, we got the ball back on the fumble recovery at the MSU 30.  Hoke or someone realized it would be good for the team to have the 1st stringers score.

I don't think this is anything we don't already know.  Hoke is not a quick thinker.

Nuss wouldn't feel the same loyalty to Gardner as Hoke does, and I'm sure he was frustrated with Gardner's inability to find open receivers.  I wouldn't be surprised at all if this happened.  Seemed like Nuss was trying to take a higher profile today (or maybe the cameras were just showing him more).

In another thread - he's worried about hurting feelings. MSU benched their returning starter for Connor Cook because they knew he gave them the better chance - not saying SM is the answer but MAKE A DEFINITIVE DECISION AND STAND BY IT.

What would inserting Morris have accomplished?  I am so pissed at people who throw Devin Gardner under the bus.  All Morris has demonstrated in his action so far is that he is even less able to make chicken soup out of Nussmeier's chicken feathers than Gardner is.

The game would have been 35-3 or 42-3 if Morris had been put in.  Keep Shane Morris out so he doesn't get "Lionized" by the current state of affairs at the Big House.

Like it or not, Morris will be competing for the starting QB spot next year and getting in-game experience this year helps him even if he struggles a lot right now. Do you think Devin played good enough today to not be benched (if we had a viable backup)? No one's throwing him under the bus, he stunk today (even given the drops). His turnovers were brutal.  This season is lost, do you really care if we lose 35-11 vs. 35-3 or whatever?  So yes, inserting Morris accomplishes something.

in case Gardner gets hurt at some point in the season.

But then I think they realized that it would be good for the 1st stringers morale to score.

It shows Hoke's slow thinking, but we already knew that.

Its building for the future.

Devin Gardner was terrific for a few games in 2012 and had a couple big games last year. However, it appears that the QB he was from Akron to Iowa is the real Devin Gardner and that Notre Dame/Ohio State were flukish. If you check out his stat line for those games and compare it to this year's stat line, its about the same.

Morris may be worse, but there are no goals to meet for this season. There is no bowl streak to uphold and 15 extra practices with this staff coaching them seems pretty funny. Play for next year. Give the young guys all over a little more run than they would normally get.

I feel this too. Yes not executing well but with no leadership from grown adults that are supposed to be coaching them, what else can we expect? Clapping isn't constructive criticism, you know what I mean? They need some fire, some passion, some clear expectation that not every single thing that happens is a clappable, "smile anyways and move on" moment. I don't think they need a Brian kelly thing in their face all the time but when no one in the leadership position seems motivated at all, that's the example...those are their role models.

Hoke and Nuss have a DUAL THREAT QB in Gardner, yet they try to have him stand in the pocket and scan the field like Tom Brady...THEN wonder why he's so ineffective!! How many designed QB runs were there today? ZERO. Freaking idiotic. You have a quality dual threat QB, not Tom freakin Brady! That means you stress the defense with his running ability then burn them with open, easy to read passes once the D cheats to stop the run. THAT'S THE WAY IT WORKS WITH A DUAL THREAT QB. These players didn't just magically start to suck, people! Hoke and Nussmeier have NOT used their personnel correctly. Full stop. Fire everyone.
