Hoke's Disdain for the Press

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
Trying to add an original thought to the post-game discussion:

Hoke's behavior towards the press is now becoming an embarrassment. Not only is he lying about injuries and refusing to answer simple depth chart inquiries, his pouty response to Baumgardner's question about why UM can't get over the away rival hump was an embarrassment feature on SportsCenter.

This isn't a Practice Gate issue. It's a coach who is now failing to act professionally. Donors see this, recruits see this. Does he need to slap himself before the fan base expects more?

Hating the press is totally reasonable.  They suck at their jobs and ask inane questions built on stupid narratives for the most part.

It's just a hell of a lot less charming if you can't win.

He's paid to be a coach, not to please the media. Having said that, it is annoying. At least I could have lowered my optimism had I known Peppers would be out. Taylor going out so early is huge too because at least if he had gone out at the end of the App St. game, they could have planned around not having him.

...without too much time to plan for it.  Maybe Kelly is a better recruiter?

And.....Hoke is paid to please the media and alumni.  Nothing in Hoke's coaching resume indicates that he earned a 6 year, $21 million contract when he was hired.   You need the amorphous "recruiting" and PR to explain that inexplicable document.

It was only three weeks (Aug 15).

I'm most surprised, of course, about how important a true freshman is to this deep, experienced defense that his absence could be a "reason" that explains poor performance.

Didn't the preseason hype laud our "fast" and "deep" DB corps?  Where were they last night?  (And please don't complain about the penalties.  The two PIs on Lewis were textbook, easy calls.)

Dave Brandon's friend and the only reason he got hired. He said he would resign if he did not win B1G championships! We are so far away from that. Oh well, more 6 and 7 win seasons!

he should've just said fuck it, we suck and I would've respected him more. He was deer in headlights all game and sounded like Brain Kelly vs bama at halftime in this interview.

How he handles the press is not a problem.  It is no worse then Bellichek or Popovich (sorry if I just totally screwed up those names).  You love a coaches press conferences when he is winning, you hate them when they lose.  Its that simple.  Its not about the press conferences, its about what you do on the field.

Hoke can stick a giant middle finger up to the press as far as I'm concerned if he's winning since his methods would be effective without explanation. If he's losing and not communicating specifically what went wrong and more importantly his plans to fix it then we have nothing to evaluate his performance. I realize our evaluation is not immediately relevant but if we continue to see the degradation of this problem we're good to have more problems than the 100,000 streak. We give extraordinary amounts of support to this program and yet we are treated like dirt and with impudence. It's getting really tiring.

Thing is, we didn't really give up "big" plays. We slightly pressured Golston, he made perfect pas after perfect pass, and his receivers made some great catches consistently.  Tell me, you look at the box score without looking at the game score, would anyone ever think the game score was 31-0?? No, ND executed like a well oiled machine on top of our D not doing the small things and our O not finishing any drives because of Gardner panic and O-line failing.

I agree 100%. His "Well, [enter load of nonsense here]" act has gotten old. It's not cute and it makes it seems as though he hasn't got all his marbles in order. How much longer are we gonna have to sit here and watch Hoke look clueless on the sideline with his arms crossed while the players are out there getting waxed? Clapping and slapping players on the ass after they go down 28-0? I don't know, man.

I saw the sportscenter segment. It was a bad look.

I question giving Funchess #1, does a #1 fall down after every catch from a 5'9" corner minimite? NO!!1!  what was his YAC? 3 yards?

hoke thought nuss could save him this year and he should have just gotten into the unemployment line after borges

At first glance I was sure this was sarcasm given all the other stuff going on, but... this is serious?  You're seriously not happy with Funchess??  Funchess is like, I don't know, somewhere between last and fourth to last on problematic things/people/issues with the MICH football program right now.

EDIT:  upon further review, i'm the sucker, mlive troll joins today.  i bit.  i blame alcohol.

I'd like to see how a few more games work out since the season is already under way, but what if we fire Hoke? Does the coaching search go any better than the previous two? It always seems like Michigan is late to the coaching carousel, and it fucks them. Who could they even get? I have no idea.

Hoke can barely string a fucking sentence together.  It's not a surprise he doesn't handle the press very well.

All this goes away if you win.  Carr was prickly with the press often too and it was ok since he (mostly) won.  Saban and Belichek (sp) are not cool with the press a lot of the time.  None of their fans care.  Because they win.  That's the bottom line.   Win and this is a non issue.  Lose and every little thing becomes an issue.  Headsets clapping press crap.  Thats how coaching regimes collapse onto themselves.

Yep. This is just an area that gets blown up as a complaint because Michigan got crushed today. And that's the problem--the loss on Saturday, not the evasiveness at a presser. He could be the greatest quote ever, a guy who buys the whole press pizza and tells them everything about the team, and still be in hot water if he didn't win. Look at how Pete Carroll is perceived now as compared to his first NFL stint.

Carr could put a sentence together. Hell, he could go up there and recite poetry. There was no doubt he could actually talk, even if he didn't really want to.

It's not that Hoke is prickly; he's downright incoherent. When he does talk, that is. This was a criticism when we were winning, too.  But, I guess it's fashionable to say that wins cure all.

but all those guys are inteliigent and well-respected minds in their fields - they were all successful coordinators at some point while hoke has never been nor could ever be successful coordinator at big time level.  hoke scores points for his "everyman" persona and his friendly demeanor with colleagues, players, recruits, parents etc - people like him, even prick opposing coaches mostly still like him.  but that does not necessarily translate to wins.

having the mind and coordinator experience / abilities are almost necessities for big time head coaches - very few figure head types ever consistently win big time.  and winning is all that matters - graduating players and and molding men etc are also really important but no one really cares and donations start to dry up if you cannot produce on the field.

if hoke were winning he really could extend both middle fingers during press conferences and get away with it.  winning cures all.  while losing attracts skepticism and the desire for answers just builds.  well see if hoke can win (he walked into total disaster so i did cut him some slack) but his "physicalness" "effort" "execution" "competition" schtick is so stale at this point.  he better pray his first few classes stacked with his OL and DL start panning out as well as his classes heavy on LBs and DBs bc that team last night was noticably less athletic, slower and not as violent pretty much across the board compared to ND.

hot dog water is hilarious and "weve got a plan, its pretty good" plays if youre winning - if not, its embarassing for all involved

Thank you for saving me typing. Saban is an asshat as a human being. You guys don't see the half of it. He puts on the charm for ESPN. His obnoxious treatment of the local media is legendary. My Bama fan friends agree. I'm a Patriots fan because of Brady, BB is an asshole even though he coaches my team. Hoke's problem is not media relations, it is that he  doesn't develop the considerable talent he recruits. I love the guy. But he has to win more.

you are over your head and you have nothing more to offer than cheeleading and defensive line observations with the word "feel" you tend to get annoyed when professionals start to figure you out.
