Hello: Jack Tuttle (QB transfer from Indiana)

Welp, I would hardly call this an impressive pickup (only threw 12 passes this year), but if nothing else he ads some experience to the QB room.  Depending on if he used a redshirt early in his career, he's got one or two years of eligibility.

Hmmmm.....Captain of the team.  Lost his starting spot to an underclassmen.  When he came in for backup duty.....he suffered a season ending injury.  Yet.....the guy never left the team.  He stayed around and was still "involved with football" even though he could have just bolted.  It's good to build QB depth next year with a guy like that.

He actually had a redshirt/medshirt this year.  His first and only game was a start against Penn State on 11/5, where he went 9-12 with a TD, before getting hurt late in the first half and missing the rest of the season.  So this year + Covid means two years of eligibility as a grad transfer.  Next year he’s a backup and in two years he probably has the chance to compete for a starting role as a 6th year senior.

(He actually had a year of spring ball in 2018 at Utah, so he might have used up a year of eligibility then when he transferred to Indiana for the fall and had to sit out, but my guess is that between the updates instant transfer rules and a medshirt case this past season, he’ll wind up with two more years. Was a 4-star prospect in the 2018 class).

I'm impressed that the coaching staff found this solid replacement for Bowman to be the backup for the backup.

Starting QBs get hurt a significant amount of the time, e.g. 2017 when Speight (due to Purdue) and Peters (due to Wisconsin) both got hurt and then we had to rely on John O'Korn for The Game.

We need depth / options in 2023 at the most important position to ensure success through a full season.

Makes sense - I thought we were a bit thin at QB after Bowman left.  There have been times that we have been down to a 3rd String QB due to injuries and with the portal you never know who will be around when the season starts.

Harbaugh et al are killing it in the transfer portal.

Tuttle is an ideal third-string QB.  Has demonstrated a level of competence.  Fifth year playing college football in the Big Ten.  Probably realizes that it's not realistic to expect to be a starter so is probably happy to be on a competitive team with a coaching staff that can get him ready for a career in coaching...if that's what he desires.

Clearly best friends with a TE and will transfer with his TE.  QB - also a captain -  comes first, then TE.

Hmmm... this sounds familiar for some reason....

He was a 4-star #167 recruit out of HS.  Unlikely to see the field but probably thinks he can compete for a backup spot and be a part of a winning team/culture.  Doesn't hurt to have Mike Hart on the staff, too.

This is a very nice get. Now that Alan Bowman has left the program, this is a nice replacement. Jack Tuttle might get some of the coaching he needs to improve from Michigan. Tuttle probably realizes he could be QB2 at best so he knows what he's getting into.

This is the best we could probably ask for when it comes to a portal QB. Someone with game experience in FBS, and coming here with intention to go pro in something other than sports. Wants nothing more than to be a part of a winning culture and help the team in any way he can. Nice pickup

I hope he gets some playing time in the 2nd half of blowouts next season. It will be good for Bowman to get some competition for that backup spot.

FUN FACTS

If Jack Tuttle has a touchdown pass to AJ Barner for Michigan against Penn State, then they'll be able to say that they've connected for a touchdown pass in separate seasons against Penn State, but while playing for Indiana in 2022 and for Michigan in 2023.  LINK

If Cade McNamara has a touchdown pass to Erick All for Iowa against Penn State, then they'll be able to say that they've connected for a touchdown pass in separate seasons against Penn State, but while playing for Michigan in 2021 and for Iowa in 2023. LINK
