Have We Reached F5 Yet?

Submitted by tnixon16 on

Am I the only one who seems to have arrived at F5 season early this year? I'm coming back here way too often for a grown adult in the month of August. But I can feel it in the air.  #ItsHappening ... And, like a young Han Solo, "I've got a really good feeling about this!"

Anyway, feel free to hate on the OP. Just looking for a support group to join for those who can't wait for September 1st to get here.

Hope this helps with the itch. Nothing earth shattering as full contact has not even started yet. That may start in the next day or so.

 - Shotgun friendly offense has made an appearance

- OL supposedly improved (not in full pads/no hitting so, take it with a grain of salt)

- WR's look much improved; Perry received some mention (see above comment about not being in full pads)

- Defense looks scary fast (I do believe that 100%)

- Great depth on DL/LB

- Fr. RB's getting a crack at RB3

- Things got very chippy at practice and a few got the boot after a skirmish (the intensity is certainly there)

Depth on DL is good.

RB3 is going to be scary. We're fine as long as both Higdon and Evans are healthy. But if one of them gets dinged... that's not good. And it's hard for a running back to get through a season without getting dinged.

Too early to know anything, umbig11... but this is sweet, sweet nectar.

EDIT: btw I was encouraged by the update on your daughter a while ago. That must've been a terrifying couple of days.

Not that it will stop us from drawing way too many conclusions on small data.

But as it turns over in my mind, two more thoughts (from a complete amateur, I'm neither an expert nor an insider) bubble up:

1. It would be sensible for the team to run as much gun as they can get away with without hamstringing the short yardage / I formation running-and-PA game. I don't know what the percentage was last year but it could stand to be higher. Both our presumed starting QB and our RBs are well-suited to think any time we don't have a fullback on the field.

2. You actually CAN glean a fair amount from WRs due to the nature of what they do. If they know the plays, know checks, run good routes and are making good catches... lots of good info there that you can get in shorts. Of course last year they were probably as raw as you could imagine. I nonetheless choose to be encouraged.

Yes indeedy. Itch scratched.

(TO ALL: Apologies for injection of the “F5” colloquialism...which I don’t even use myself. But I see it bantered about on this here board, so I was trying to fit in and get girls. Since every device I own is an apple, I’m more of CMD+R fella myself. Carry on.)

Thanks for the sweet nectar, UMBig11!

They are, but they both involve the QB standing several yards behind the center, and in a brief "nugget" might be conflated. If MIchigan intended to do a lot of running from places other than under center, it is safe to assume that the pistol formation will be a significant factor.

Nonetheless, my hopes aside, I'll believe it when I see it. Harbaugh is good at devising wrinkles and adapting to what defenses present him, and always has been. He has experience with the pistol in SF.

But barely a year has gone by since DG was our QB that there hasn't been talk about the gun or the pistol and it has wound up amounting to no more than a couple of plays.

It might genuinely be different this year due to the personnel, but my guess is that from the wider perspective the mix of formations and schemes won't be that different.

The personnel we have this season is very suited to the pistol. Given that Harbaugh has experience with the formation and we have a qb in Shea that has the mobility to be a real threat to keep the ball. I would hope that the coaches have at least considered installing some pistol.

This article below is a bit old, but I think it does a nice job of showing how teams can use the pistol to run with bigger personnel on the field. Imagine having Evans behind Shea and one of Tight Ends (Eubanks) or Mason as the H-back. Also with the big receivers we have on the outside like Black and Collins, I think this formation could lend a lot of versatility to the run game and create mismatches in the passing game to keep defenses honest.

umbig11....I’ve heard that our OT are absolutely horrendous this year.  To the point where they need to have the second string DL in just to run passing plays.  Any truth to this?

I find it hard to believe that JBB, who is a senior and struggled to pass protect at RT....all of a sudden is a serviceable LT

F5 is the Fujita-Pearson classification scale of a tornado. F5 is the highest classification, and the most deadly version.

Hmph surprised you didn't know that.
