Harbaugh Now Highest Paid Coach in CFB

Submitted by IMissJohnCooper on

Harbaugh's salary has increased to $9 million. He is now making more than $2 million more than Nick Saban.

Who's got more money than us?!?

Some other notable coaches salaries and where they rank:

3) Urban Meyer - $6,094,800

6) Charlie Strong (for now?) - $5,200,130

10) Kirk Ferentz (lolz, Iowa!) - $4,500,000

14) Mike D'antoni - $4,300,000

The top 25 are in the link below!

Edit: Just a reference, the 2 highest paid coaches in the NFL (Pete Carroll and Sean Payton) are making $8 million per year...

And as pointed out below, this includes the huge life insurance premium of $4 million, so it is skewed. Either way, he has earned all of it!

Bill Belichick deserves to be the highest paid coach in the world.  He must have some back end incentives built in to his deal.  Thats the Patriot way to accept less up front for the team.

Then I read stories like this and think how obscene it is that there is that much money to throw around and the people producing the product get very little by comparison. I'm not saying JH is overpaid but I'd like to see the players get some more. Maybe some kind of deferred compensation paid as a %of gate similar to actor royalties?

I'm also bothered by little league making millions off kids and they, nor their parents, get anything. I'm certainly not advocating paying them either.

Is Coach Harbaugh inherently worth $9 million? Probably not. He might even tell you the same. But he's worth whatever the market says he's worth. And if paying him $9 million a year keeps him here and away from the NFL, wins games, and competes for titles, then I'd say it's worth every penny. The ROI you get back from hiring him, both tangible and intangible, is ten-fold.

Renewed interest (and fanaticism) in the football program, higher season ticket sales, waiting lists, more merchandise bought, alumni donations to keep the good times rolling, increased applications to the university, more media coverage, and just about anything else you can think up. Think about it: Michigan is in the media now all the time. And this time around, not for the wrong reasons. All of those things bring money with it, and they easily pay for the $9 million a year that you pay Harbaugh to coach your team.

Of course, there are some folks out there who say that its a grotesque display of unfairness, or that its not right that Harbaugh maks 9 million a year when the women's field hockey coach, or the men's gymnastics coach, make a mere fraction of that. It is unfortunate, as those coaches put their time in too. But its the way of the world. America cares about football. That's our pride and joy, and its not going to change any time soon.

When the field hockey team loses, it stinks, but no one talks about it. When the football team loses, it permeates throughout campus, throughout the fanbase throughout the country. Everything Harbaugh is and does is under a microscope. He is the face of the university, and arguably the most powerful man on campus. Probably the most powerful in the state, behind the governor. No one in the Michigan world is under constant surveillance anywhere near as close as Harbaugh.

He's worth what the market says he's worth. And so far, he's been worth every penny.
