Got a favorite quote from a coach / former coach directed at another?

Submitted by mi93 on

Saw a quote from Spurrier...

"You can have good ballplayers and still not win football games.  All you LSU fans know about that."

Cold blooded dagger.  And made me want to know if the board has any favorite quotes in the genre of a coach / former coach ripping another coach or school.  In this realm, it's hard to argue against Spurrier as the gold standard, but this couold be a very entertaining start to Friday Eve.  What you got?

Here are some Spurrier classics:

On South Carolina's 52-7 win over the Razorbacks: "I do feel badly for Arkansas. That's no fun getting your butt beat at home, homecoming and all that."

On the Gamecocks' matchup at Tennessee "Will be the 14th time I've coached in Neyland Stadium. ... I've coached there more than some of their head coaches."

Classic Spurrier

Georgia

On playing the Dawgs early: "I don't know. I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended."

On Georgia recruiting: "Why is it that during recruiting season they sign all the great players, but when it comes time to play the game, we have all the great players? I don't understand that. What happens to them?"

Tennessee

On the Vols missing out on the Sugar Bowl during his Florida years: "You can't spell Citrus without U-T."

On Peyton Manning: "I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl."

Alabama

On recruiting: "In 12 years at Florida, I don't think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama ... Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours."

Florida State

On scandal in Tallahassee: "You know what FSU stands for, don't you? Free Shoes University."

On illegal hits against Danny Wuerffel: "He's like a New Testament person. He gets slapped up side the face, and turns the other cheek and says, 'Lord, forgive them for they know not what they're doing.' I'm probably more of an Old Testament guy. You spear our guy in the earhole, we think we're supposed to spear you in the earhole. That's kind of where we're a little different."

Auburn

On a fire at the football dorm that destroyed 20 books: "But the real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet."

Clemson

On the Death Valley nickname: "Most of our guys have never been to Death Valley. (LSU's stadium) is the Death Valley, isn't it? Or is there another one? There's two of them. That's right. There's two Death Valleys."

On the state of the South Carolina program (widely attributed, but probably not an original): "We aren't LSU and we aren't Alabama. But we sure ain't Clemson."

On Dabo Swinney's anger over the above quote: "I said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do? I didn't say it.' Smart people don't believe everything they read, and they don't believe hearsay. ... I guess Dabo believed it."

I'm partial to John McKay's quip after a game during Tampa's 0-fer season.  He was asked: "How do you feel about your offenses execution, coach?"

Answer:  "I'm in favor of it"...

I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance.

could be counted on for presser gold.  IU was losing big to LSU (NCAA tournament game, I think), and came back to win.  Post-game, Knight says,

"I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown.  Then I knew we had a chance."

First coach to win 100 games in college (SDSU) and the NFL and originator of the "air Coryell" offense , to a head coach who complained about him  running up the score while at SDSU: "Don't blame me for your poor personnel."

“That boy don’t know the meaning of the word fear. In fact, I just saw his grades, and that boy don’t know the meaning of a lot of words.”

Mack Brown at Texas:

“Most players don’t mind drug testing once they realize they don’t have to study for it.”

While I'm not a fan of "Saint Bobby", he was the master of stiletto-ing someone while saying "bless his heart".  And when he pointed that stiletto at rape-denier/enabler Joe Paterno, well - I gotta respect the game if not the player!

“I left the house early this morning to play golf, and after we had played nine holes someone from the golf course brought me a note telling me about the NCAA’s rulings; the vacating of 111 wins from Penn State among them. Understanding what that meant, I must say that there is no rejoicing in the Bowden household. Nobody would want to have a title given to him this way, you know it? No sanctions, no amount of money, and no penalties could ever repay or repair the damage done to those young boys. I just hate the way all of this has happened. Nothing that has transpired today has changed what our teams accomplished over the years one bit. All of this attention and focus should be on the innocent victims of this tragedy.” ---- Bobby Bowden

when the Marshall University football team tried starting back up after the plane crash tragedy, Bowden (who was at WVU at the time) was very helpful to the new coaching staff.  After I learned about that, I always felt a little differently about Bowden.  Seemed that deep down, he knew that at the end of the day it was just a game, and there's a little more to life than football.

Well, that's how the movie "Marshall" (I think that was its name) portrayed things, anyway.  As it was in the movie, Bowden was coarse and dismissive of the Marshall coach, but quietly gave him access to pretty much anything he needed to get things going - library, equipment, practice gear, inroads with other coaches to get schedules going, access to playbooks.  That was all in the movie, so it must be true!
