Getting Mullen won't be easy

Submitted by 991GT3 on

Already local newspapers are campaigning to find a way to extented his contract without violating state laws allowing only four contracts. The article  mentions the Hoke and Miles situation i.e. Miles going to Michigan and LSU coming after Mullun or Michigan going after Mullen with Florida in the mix.

Mullen is going to get paid the big bucks. Miss St will put on the full court press to keep him. If Miss State wins it all, then the pressure to stay will be overwhelming for Mullen. However, anything short of that I think he is a flight risk to a program that has better facilities, recruiting base, etc.

For everyone doing cartwheels over the thought of mullens take about 5 min to do some roster breakdown. Quick version look at miss st and mich roster side by side. Holy shit I wish we had that many seniors and juniors who actually contribute on the field. Long version check out the other SEC teams. Im not saying he's a bad coach but I dont think he's as good as some are making him out to be. Could it be NFL lite SEC is actually having a down year???? Could Mullen be catching lightning in a bottle? Maybe. Dont rule it out. I want a Harbaugh. Any Harbaugh

The SEC was almost undefeated non-conference. Yes, Missouri lost to Indiana, but they also just got destroyed by Georgia. I can't think of any really marquee matchups, but some SEC teams beat some decent teams out of conference.

The craziest thing about Miss St. this year is how none of these last 3 games have been nailbiters. The Auburn game was competitive of course, but they still won by what? 18? They destroyed TA&M. The LSU game was a blowout until they let their guard down too, right?

Hell, I'm almost worried they'll be too good and Mullen will wonder why he has to go anywhere else. I'm sure for the long-term he's better off elsewhere but it's one thing if you're doing very well in a lower-tier conference and maxing out, but if you can get into the playoffs now, what do you really need another program for? It's never made sense that Mississippi hasn't any good programs anyway considering the talent base.

Am I off base for not being excited to have Les Miles coaching here? I want a coach in his prime. Not a 61 year old on the tail end of his career getting lazy in recruiting.

Big name coaches often don't repeat their success when they move to another name school. I favor getting the hottest person at a lower level division. Somebody who consistently dominates their competition. The whole Hoke hire has turned many off of going to a lower division but Hoke never won a title as a coach- let alone consistently. Meyer, Tressel, etc. all started lower.

What about that coach from the Mine school out West? He seems dominant. Somebody will get him.

If we go that route, I'm thinking Craig Bohl. He wasn't just good at NDSU. He was DOMINANT. 3 straight national titles. Whether you're at FBS or JUCO-levels, that is damn impressive.

Age is a slight concern, and he doesn't have any big-time football experience. At least not as a coordinator or HC. But neither did Tressel. But he's a winner, and I see no reason why we couldn't get him if we didn't want him.

That being said, I'd like to see how this season plays out with him. If he can get Wyoming to 8-9 wins in his first season there, I'd say give him a call if Harbaugh/Mullen don't work out.

One downside of going after Mullen with his team on track to play in the 4 team playoff is that you couldn't realistically have him here before mid-January. Which means we would have a program without a leader for 6 weeks after the OSU game.

Ehh, if he's going anywhere, he'll go to Florida. But even so, I'm not even sure he'd want to leave Miss State. Its still the same conference and he's getting access to largely the same talent pool as Florida is.

Granted, I think Florida is more geared towards being able to have sustained long-term success, but it may very well just be a lateral move from Miss State to Florida. One way or another, Miss State is going to pull out all the stops and throw every last dollar into making sure he stays. If he wins a national title this year, getting kids to come to Miss State will be just as easy, if not easier than to get them to come to Florida.

I'm betting he stays at Miss State. He's building something great there, and if he wins a national title, I can't imagine him leaving.

Harbaugh or bust, my friends. Harbaugh or bust.

So your rationale for not hiring a spread coach is because Michigan failed once. Okayyyyy. Rich Rod failed for a lot of reasons, but running a spread offense was not one of them. Also lets just ignore all the other teams dominating college football using some variation of a spread. If Michigan wants to show its committed to winning it will hire a coach capable of taking advantage of this new era of offensive football. If not we will know Michigan is still caught up on past success and playing football like its the 1990s.

Listen the problem is depending on the kind of spread we hire, this fan base will NOT stand another 3-4 years of rebuilding all because one guy wants to come in here and put his stamp on the program. Alumni/fans will not have the patience for starting completely over, more transfers, etc. There are plenty of coaches out there who will be able to run an offense/defense based on what Michigan has. Michigan just will need to put together a GREAT committee and find their man. It would be nice if the committee wasn't DB or any other michigan men but possibly an independent one who knows how the fuck to handle coaching searches. I don't want a guy like RR who is going to come in and shove some system down our throats regardless of his clientele, that's stupid, we already tried that.

There can be a transition period, you know? For all the shit Borges took, usually rightfully so, it's not like he just completely got rid of Denard as a runner, like we've done with Gardner, likely to the demise of Hoke's tenure here.

People keep thinking the offense was bad in 2008 just because it was a spread, as if the lack of talent had nothing to do with it. The defense is still young, the O-line should be awesome next year with good coaching, Morris is way more talented than Sheridan or Threet were, etc.

How many non-spread guys are there that are even a remote possibility? David Shaw, Miles, Bielema and.... ?  After that you would take a risk on a coordinator who's never been a HC before. Fact of the matter is, there's a reason that the most successful coaches are spread-based.  We're inside zone based right now with an athletic QB in Morris slated to start next year; granted he's no DG, but at least having the threat of the QB running is all that's needed and Morris can do that. The fact that some are unwilling to look at a coach because he runs spread concepts, when there's strong evidence it's the most successful style, is absolutely mind blowing to me and exactly part of the problem with UM.

Caue we here at M KNOW that its only a fad and won't work in the big bad Big10. Even Bama they of the Manball offense are incorporating more spread/zone read concepts in their offense. Lets go back to the wing t. Maybe that'll make this dilusional fanbase happy. Jeez.

I don't think Florida is in his future. Isn't he too close to Urb? And we know all the love Florida has for Urb. Also what is the over/under on how many coaches get compensation windfalls because Michigan is out looking? 5? 10? The entire SEC and a couple Harbaughs?

Lol yea and which team did he coach against? Oh yea...look I'm not saying he's a bad coach, he's an average to good coach. I just think we need a more solid coach that has been there done that numerous times not just one year. We can't make another mistake when it comes to getting a coach. We need a top flight coach if we can get him..

They can't answer your question cause they've got no clue. They don't want Mullen, they don't want Miles or anybody you can think of. Even the Harbaughs have been degraded by some. Theres no pleasing them. I think their hoping that Yost, Crisler or Bo comes back from the dead and even then they'd bitch. We'll just keep reliving the past.
