Getting Mullen won't be easy
Already local newspapers are campaigning to find a way to extented his contract without violating state laws allowing only four contracts. The article mentions the Hoke and Miles situation i.e. Miles going to Michigan and LSU coming after Mullun or Michigan going after Mullen with Florida in the mix.

Mullen is going to get paid the big bucks. Miss St will put on the full court press to keep him. If Miss State wins it all, then the pressure to stay will be overwhelming for Mullen. However, anything short of that I think he is a flight risk to a program that has better facilities, recruiting base, etc.

The SEC was almost undefeated non-conference. Yes, Missouri lost to Indiana, but they also just got destroyed by Georgia. I can't think of any really marquee matchups, but some SEC teams beat some decent teams out of conference.
The craziest thing about Miss St. this year is how none of these last 3 games have been nailbiters. The Auburn game was competitive of course, but they still won by what? 18? They destroyed TA&M. The LSU game was a blowout until they let their guard down too, right?
Hell, I'm almost worried they'll be too good and Mullen will wonder why he has to go anywhere else. I'm sure for the long-term he's better off elsewhere but it's one thing if you're doing very well in a lower-tier conference and maxing out, but if you can get into the playoffs now, what do you really need another program for? It's never made sense that Mississippi hasn't any good programs anyway considering the talent base.

Am I off base for not being excited to have Les Miles coaching here? I want a coach in his prime. Not a 61 year old on the tail end of his career getting lazy in recruiting.

Sort of agree here

yeah, Les would be waaaaaay underwhelming

Big name coaches often don't repeat their success when they move to another name school. I favor getting the hottest person at a lower level division. Somebody who consistently dominates their competition. The whole Hoke hire has turned many off of going to a lower division but Hoke never won a title as a coach- let alone consistently. Meyer, Tressel, etc. all started lower.
What about that coach from the Mine school out West? He seems dominant. Somebody will get him.
October 12th, 2014 at 12:33 PM ^
If we go that route, I'm thinking Craig Bohl. He wasn't just good at NDSU. He was DOMINANT. 3 straight national titles. Whether you're at FBS or JUCO-levels, that is damn impressive.
Age is a slight concern, and he doesn't have any big-time football experience. At least not as a coordinator or HC. But neither did Tressel. But he's a winner, and I see no reason why we couldn't get him if we didn't want him.
That being said, I'd like to see how this season plays out with him. If he can get Wyoming to 8-9 wins in his first season there, I'd say give him a call if Harbaugh/Mullen don't work out.

But if they do, Dan Doeren meets all the qualifications.

We don't have a leader now.
October 12th, 2014 at 12:28 PM ^
Ehh, if he's going anywhere, he'll go to Florida. But even so, I'm not even sure he'd want to leave Miss State. Its still the same conference and he's getting access to largely the same talent pool as Florida is.
Granted, I think Florida is more geared towards being able to have sustained long-term success, but it may very well just be a lateral move from Miss State to Florida. One way or another, Miss State is going to pull out all the stops and throw every last dollar into making sure he stays. If he wins a national title this year, getting kids to come to Miss State will be just as easy, if not easier than to get them to come to Florida.
I'm betting he stays at Miss State. He's building something great there, and if he wins a national title, I can't imagine him leaving.
Harbaugh or bust, my friends. Harbaugh or bust.

Any pursuit of Mullen by UM would only ensure he gets an even bigger payday than the one I'm sure is already in the pipeline for him. Miss St. is learning that this winning stuff pays dividends, and I wouldn't be surprised if they promptly upgrade their facilities as well.
October 12th, 2014 at 12:40 PM ^
He is a spread guy. There is a good chance that Michigan will not go that route as it would entail a lengthy rebuild. People should focus their attention elsewhere.

RR didn't fail at running a spread offense here. But he did fail at running an effective one against non-MAC teams (and often against MAC teams).

Tressel ran the spread at times and Urban came right in and ran the spread perfectly fine. Why is it only an issue here?

There can be a transition period, you know? For all the shit Borges took, usually rightfully so, it's not like he just completely got rid of Denard as a runner, like we've done with Gardner, likely to the demise of Hoke's tenure here.
People keep thinking the offense was bad in 2008 just because it was a spread, as if the lack of talent had nothing to do with it. The defense is still young, the O-line should be awesome next year with good coaching, Morris is way more talented than Sheridan or Threet were, etc.
October 13th, 2014 at 12:44 AM ^
Don't disagree with your post, but I don't think we could run Gardner a lot. Dude takes a beating and is often gimpy the way it is.
October 13th, 2014 at 5:24 AM ^
Well obviously he couldn't for a lot of the PSU game and some others, but I'd think he actually wouldn't get hit as hard running usually compared to just standing in the pocket and having guys launch at him.
October 12th, 2014 at 1:56 PM ^
Hopefully Brandon won't be the guy doing the offering.
October 12th, 2014 at 2:00 PM ^
How many non-spread guys are there that are even a remote possibility? David Shaw, Miles, Bielema and.... ? After that you would take a risk on a coordinator who's never been a HC before. Fact of the matter is, there's a reason that the most successful coaches are spread-based. We're inside zone based right now with an athletic QB in Morris slated to start next year; granted he's no DG, but at least having the threat of the QB running is all that's needed and Morris can do that. The fact that some are unwilling to look at a coach because he runs spread concepts, when there's strong evidence it's the most successful style, is absolutely mind blowing to me and exactly part of the problem with UM.
October 12th, 2014 at 3:49 PM ^
Caue we here at M KNOW that its only a fad and won't work in the big bad Big10. Even Bama they of the Manball offense are incorporating more spread/zone read concepts in their offense. Lets go back to the wing t. Maybe that'll make this dilusional fanbase happy. Jeez.

So then we shouldn't hire a manball coach. So that leaves what? I say hire the best coach available that is willing to coach here. I could careless who it is or what coaching position they currently hold.
October 12th, 2014 at 7:23 PM ^
because, as Brian has repeatedly noted here, there are precious few pure pro-style coaches left. Aside from a pipe dream like David Shaw or someone from the NFL itself, there aren't many desirable pro style coaches out there... McElwain, I guess.

October 12th, 2014 at 2:59 PM ^
Many in the fan base would complain that the only reason he walked on water was because he didn't know how to swim and was too scared of drowning.
October 12th, 2014 at 3:02 PM ^
Also because he never played football, perhaps?
October 12th, 2014 at 3:55 PM ^
They can't answer your question cause they've got no clue. They don't want Mullen, they don't want Miles or anybody you can think of. Even the Harbaughs have been degraded by some. Theres no pleasing them. I think their hoping that Yost, Crisler or Bo comes back from the dead and even then they'd bitch. We'll just keep reliving the past.
