Wolverine Devotee

Funchess joins Biakabutuka as the only Wolverines to be drafted by the Carolina Panthers.

Mr. 313 went #8 overall in the 1996 draft.

I'm not sure that I love the pick on Carolina's part. They have two very similar receivers in Kelvin Benjamin and now Funchess.

Then again, I don't like Cam Newton, so I don't really care that much.

They might be tough in the red zone, but getting to the red zone might be difficult. I think it's a good idea to have a variety of types of receivers. For example, Detroit's combination of Calvin Johnson (a deep ball/jump ball guy) and Golden Tate (a catch-and-run guy) is extremely effective because it opens up a variety of plays, combination routes, etc. If I were Carolina, I would be looking for more of a slot guy like Golden Tate.

Both WRs are 6'5". I can see whomever gets matched up against the smaller CB getting a lot of jump balls thrown their way. This is like the twin towers offense of Marvin Webster and Bill Cartwright. Wait, scratch that, they weren't very effective. Let's make it Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. Basketball on grass, now they only need Charlie Ward at QB.

I almost forgot about Harbaugh's somewhat brief stint with the Panthers, although as I recall he dressed but didn't play. It was also the year where he was with the Lions for a time before the season and assumed by many - until we cut him - to be the probable backup to Batch.

A little surprising, but a good selection.  Should help Newton if he can shore up his drops.

Surprised Fisher is still out there - seems like he really fell off the face of the earth considering I had seen him a mid-1st round selection other places.
