Fostor Loyer had entered the portal. Our PG concerns may be over! Go get him Juwan.

Remember in 2019 when we were up 10 on the road with a Big Ten Title in grasp.

Instead of going up 20 when he was forced to play, the lead went down to 5.

Then we pussed out again and lost.

Wow.  I didn’t see this one coming.  This is a huge break for Izzo.  Loyer was probably Izzos worst use of a scholarship ever....you almost wonder if Izzo was putting pressure on loyer to get out.  MSU bball and football both gonna try and rebuild their teams out of the portal for 2021.

Yeah - jokes aside, this is a bit of a surprise.  Loyer was in the same mold of those fifth year try-hard program guys that Izzo always seems to have - the ones that you know will annoyingly hit a big shot against us at some point.  Maybe Izzo is graduating into modern college basketball roster management- they seem to have had more transfers this year than the past handful of years combined.

Maybe "crazy" isn't the right word. "Awful" works better. It was awful roster management to give both Loyer and Hoiberg scholarships. You said yourself Loyer is out of his element in the B1G and Izzo not identifying that during his recruitment is downright awful. He is 5'9", slow and unathletic. He would have been out of his element in the MAC.

Makes sense from a basketball standpoint - Loyer just isn't a Big 10 quality player and MSU was notably better once he went out for the season. If he wants a chance to be a key player, he'll likely fair better in a smaller school where he won't be as physically overmatched night after night.

Still, he felt like a guy learning to coach from Izzo, and given his dad's background, that seems like a decent fit for him post graduation, so I'm a bit surprised by the news as well, but if he wants to be a serious player, it wasn't going to be at MSU.

MSU brings back essentially none of the guards that crippled their team last year (outside of an unimpressive AJ Hoggard) and will refill them with Northeastern transfer Walker and talented freshmen Christie and Akins. What's the expectation for this MSU squad next season? As per usual Izzo is going to have a group of talent but I have no clue how it plays next year.

"...Loyer just isn't a Big 10 quality player and MSU was notably better once he went out for the season."

Which calls into serious question Izzo's (more recent) coaching acumen.  Look, I know the guy has had a legit career, but how the hell could he look at Loyer and continue to play him?  The ONLY reason Loyer left the court is injury, I have no doubts that Izzo would have kept playing him had he not been injured.  I just don't get what Izzo saw in him...

Nonetheless, I'm also surprised he's transferring.  He's got to know that he's not going to any place with a better shot at NCAA tourney success, even as part of a bench mob, right?

The same thing happened with Xavier Tillman. Izzo was playing Nick Ward over him, until injury forced him to play Tillman. Lo and behold, Tillman was their best overall player and they win the B1G.

Izzo has been very fortunate that injuries have covered up his poor decisions and helped them stay successful.

Thank you Foster. It isn’t very often I watch a play in a D1 basketball game where I reasonably think to myself, “I could actually do that”. But I’m pretty sure I could trip on my own feet and get Surffboarted just like Mr. Loyer.

I just looked up that Mr. Basketball class and...it's pretty clear that Trevion Williams has had the best career by far of that group, and he finished 5th.

If healthy and in the right system Loyer could absolutely be a D1 guard.  There is a place in college basketball for short, not quick guys who can really shoot.  That place is not the B1G, though Iowa could possibly be a fit given that Fran doesn't care about defense.

Loyer was a weird recruit, was one of the best high school shooters in state history, but was too small.  They listed him at 6 feet tall, when he's really 5-10 at most.

Izzo had him and turned down Duane Washington Jr because of it.  Washington is a stud.

This actually isn't surprising to me, I feel like the rumblings have been there since the tail end of the season. He reminds me a lot of David Kool, tho Kool was much taller. Just a kid who would have been better suited in a MAC role. He lacks a lot of what separates the P5 from other conferences. Seeing him on the court in games reminds you kind of of the Scalabrine video; he just looks like he doesn't belong. Even on a team like Iowa which is tailor made to his skill set, I think he isn't going to see the floor as a starter.
