Football Coach Clinic

Submitted by Boom Goes the … on

Not sure if any fellow MGoBloggers are in town, but just wanted to share my general thoughts from day 1.

-Offensive Line will improve.  Coach Drevno will get every ounce of potential out of those guys.  Mentioned Mason Cole and Kyle Kalis, and Graham Glasgow by name as doing a nice job in the clips he showed.  Don't think he was referring to anything specifically, but one comment that stuck out to me was that he will go with a younger player with more potential and live with the growing pains over a known commodity if he doesn't have the higher ceiling.  Probably doesn't mean a whole lot at this point in spring ball though.

-the best high school coaches from across the country are here and want to learn and interact with the staff.  Over 800 in attendance!

-Got to have lunch with Joran Kovacs.  Very nice guy

-Had chalk talk with Tyrone Wheatley.  Seems to keep things simple for his backs, just wants them to trust their landmarks.  Emphasizes violent hands in pass pro "like shocking someone with an EKG"... He is very excited to be back in A2

-There is a sense of confidence eminating throughout the buildings.  A storm is brewing...we'll all see come September- be very excited

I was thinking AED was more appropriate perhaps, partly because the normal cadence of such a device sounds about right for barrelling into the opposing line on either side of the ball - "Shock advised, charging......deliver shock". The only difference is that you sort of have to touch the patient - somewhat violently, and hopefully with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

a) This is cool ... inside stuff is great.

b) With a screen name like "Boom Goes the D" along with you being at a coaching clinic like this, may I conclude you are a high school coach of some sort?

c) What does "trust their landmarks" mean in football terms?

"Boom Goes the D" is clearly...David Terrell.

Hitting your landmarks means that you're taking the right steps and aiming for the right spots on the field. For example, on an outside zone run, we teach our kids to aim 2 feet outside of the end man, whether it's a TE or an OT.

Try this:  If you see the Arch, you KNOW you're near St. Louis--quit listening for others to confirm you're not in Dallas.  See hole.  Hit hole.  Find green space and a goal line.  Stop pulling over to the side of the road and checking your map.  MOVE where your instincts want you to go.  Or, always keep an eye open for the waffle house???

I am excited to be attending practice with 9 student athletes from our HS team and 2 middle kids this Tuesday. Looking forward to meeting Coach Harbaugh and getting to see the team.

Was down at Toledo last Friday and spoke with coach Camp. for a while after. That guy is super young. He is currently recruiting 2 of our kids so it was good to talk with him and coach Mac, Veidt and coach Gasser. Fun because it's an eye opener for the kids. Michigan will be an even better experience. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to meet the new staff.
