Ferris State back to back National champs

The story of the game was the Ferris defense in the first half holding Mines offense to 21 total yards. The Mines qb won D2 POY. In the first half he was 2-7 for 17 yards, 3 pass breakups, sacked 3 times, and a pick six. It was like watching a varsity team playing the JV.

How about dem Bulldogs?!!

I and my brother and a friend went to Big Rapids for their semifinal game last Saturday.  Ferris toyed with West Florida in the first half before making a few adjustments and blowing them out in the 2nd half, so I'm not surprised with how easy their Championship game went yesterday.

Their head coach Tony Annese has been successful for years at various stops. It's a bit surprising he hasn't been hired to MACtion level at some point along the way.  He's now in his early 60s, though, so likely Ferris is his last coaching gig before hanging it up.

I keep seeing this everytime the name of Annese comes up, but never any details other than that  some of the kids he recruits have a little shakier personal background, i. e. "behavior problems".

There's quite a number of D1 programs where that seems to be little or no problem, including some of the MAC schools and one B1G skool formerly known as M.A.C.

Congratulations to Ferris State. They are on quite a run of success lately. I was a bit surprised that last year was their first title, as they always seem to be a contender.

Ferris grad class of ‘90. They were just starting to build the program back then. Watched the 1st half it was crazy. Every play the Mines tried to run or pass it was a jail break into the backfield.
let’s keep the Nattys in state here in 3 weeks!!

Question here: why is it that the state of Michigan does so well at the D2 level? The Sun Belt has lapped the MAC so it seems surprising that that level of D2 talent is playing in a northern state

My theory ........ Michigan could very likely support multiple FCS level teams that would be competitive in the division.  Right now Michigan has zero FCS teams at all.

Michigan has 3.1% of America's population and 3.8% (5 of 130) of America's FBS level teams.  By those 2 metrics alone, it's a bit over-represented at the FBS level.  But it's arguably under-represented at the FCS level.

So FSU and GVSU get athletes who want to stay close to home but aren't FBS level.  Plus, those 2 programs get a good level of local support, which always helps.  Combine those 2 things and that's a structural advantage versus other D2 programs.

The Dakota schools benefit from this same dynamic in the FCS world.  Minnesota + the Dakotas have a combined 2.2% of America's population but only 1 FBS level team.  The Montana schools plus the Dakotas, of course, do very well in the FCS year after year.
